gortiz
didn't want to start another thread ... you are welcome mods anyone think big Mike should get spot in our ring of fame? I for one say yes ... didn't realize he played 11 years for the team, and by all accounts he was more than an average FB.

TheDane
Sellers and Lorenzo Alexander deserve spots in the "Ring of Every Redskins Fan Should Know Their Names." But unfortunately, as much as I love Sellers, he's not Ring of Fame material. Neither is One Man Gang yet, but maybe some day.

He was a very nice player for us, but the Ring is a special honor. If you didn't realize he was here for 11 years, that tells you something about whether he merits it or not. I don't think there's anyone currently on the team that merits it. A few that have potential to make it someday.
scruffylookin
didn't want to start another thread ... you are welcome mods anyone think big Mike should get spot in our ring of fame? I for one say yes ... didn't realize he played 11 years for the team, and by all accounts he was more than an average FB. If he is judged by performance, absolutely not. His contributions are hardly Ring of Fame quality. Especially when a guy like Mark Rypien is still waiting. However not that long ago I suggested that there should be some automatic triggers for induction so we can avoid stuff like the continued embarrassing Rypien snub. One automatic was Super Bowl MVP. You're a Super Bowl MVP for the Skins, you're in the Ring of Fame. Period. No discussion. Another I thought would be players who played in at least 150 games as a member of the Redskins. As of today, there are only 21 players who have ever played for us in 80 seasons who can claim that lofty number. Mike Sellers is one of them (164 games played 16th on the list). So in fact he does deserve to be in the Ring because of it. So as far as I'm concerned here are the missing men from the Ring right now. Mark Rypien (SB26 MVP) Monte Coleman (215 games played #2) Don Warren (196 games played #6) Jeff Bostic (184 games played #8) Mike Bragg (172 games played #10) Mike Sellers (164 games played #16) George Starke (156 games played #20) Neil Olkewicz (150 games played #21) **I must add though that the on field exploits do also come into play. Mike Sellers or Mike Bragg's contributions in their respective number of games don't come close to Neil Olkewicz or George Starke for example. But I figure if you're good enough to last that long and actually get into that many games, you get in even if contributions in said games vary. The biggest threat to this proposed automatic trigger was Ethan Albright. I don't know how I could justify a long snapper getting into the Ring. When Ethan was let go, he was at 144 games and just short of making that 150 game plateau a problem.

Art.Monk_81
A true Redskin, gave it all every down he played, and was a beast of an athlete... (I still believe he holds the CFL record for youngest age to sign a contract ... not sure though)

Voice_of_Reason
Good player, and in 2005-ish, when Portis was really rolling, he was a big piece why. But not a great player. He could catch the ball, but he made a lot of costly mistakes, and while every coach who's been in here has tried him as a goal line back, he's failed each time. Ring of Fame? No way. That really needs to be a SPECIAL thing for SPECIAL players. He was a good player, at times a very good player, but nowhere near Ring of Fame worthy. Ellis Dee
Dear Mike, I sure will miss seeing you dancing with fat girls at American Tap Room in Reston, only to take my iPhone when I tried taking a picture of you and delete my photo! :mad:Your wife would have been loved seeing you kissing other girls every Thursday nights there before road games! But oh yeah, thanks for the memories in the B&G!

I guess its hard to judge a fullback based on stats. by all accounts Mike was a great blocker, could be wrong. we know he was also pretty damn good on Teams. Ellis Dee
Was this really necessary? No but I have several run-ins with this guy out and while he seems like a likeable guy, he may be the type of guy which doesn't set a good message to our young players (Case in point I was next to him and Darrell Young at Jackson's and he was slamming Shanahan). We need high character leader type players and don't think Sellers was that guy!

You know what? While I won't 100% endorse the choice of bringing it up in this venue, I understand where Ellis is coming from. I saw Mike out a few times where I lived in WA state and his behavior was fairly widely thought (and as I have seen) to be pretty damn sorry on more than one occasion. I have never made a deal out of it here, but I have backed some similar observations in the past (without going into any detailed slamming of the guy) when they were pertinent in the thread they appeared. He's one of the Redskins who when getting effusive praise I just usually am silent. He was an adequate-to-good player (never great) most of the time, but I had little extra "fan love" for him being on the team for the actual level of his on-field contribution plus what I witnessed. Maybe I saw him (as apparently did more than a few others in this area) in his less-than-best moments, but it made me wish he was a Cowboy, to be frank. ---------- Post added April-9th-2012 at 01:26 PM ---------- yes and obviously some people are gossipy, attention-seeking busybodies. way to go. <ooops, my bad, scratch that---wrong page up on user notes>

It wasn't necessarily the best place for me to voice my opinion here, however Sellers and Ring of Fame? Seriously?!? There are many arguments I can make against that ever happening and trust me, it never will! Just to add a tidbit to my story about Darrel Young and Mike Sellers, I will say I was really impressed with Young. He was a quiet guy and didn't even drink! Seemed very respectful. I think he will be a more than adequate replacement for Sellers.
