SkinsHokieFan
Sally Jenkins writes a terrific column on WHO RG3 is. This is a big reason why some of us have been so giddy about the kid for months, he is a world class person, a guy who may return to DC 10-15 years after football in a presidential manner A big part of what makes a player great is the discipline and desire to be great. RG3 has both. The region is going to be lucky to have him here Click link for entire story Robert Griffin III: His military appreciation will play well in the NFL and would benefit the RedskinsThe most important fact about Robert Griffin III is the numeral after his name. Look at it. It’s dead straight, and it tells you exactly who he is. Don’t let the broken-play dazzle of Griffin distract you, with his across-the body throws, and his high stepping in those knee-length white socks, pretty-legged as a Rockette. This guy is all about straight lines. He’s a man with a plan, and there’s not a trace of a bend in it. Every single thing Griffin has set out to do, he accomplished. Every one. If you want to know why the Washington Redskins aren’t fearful he will be a bust, why they paid such a ransom for the second overall pick in the NFL draft in hopes of getting the Heisman Trophy winner from Baylor, despite the long history of teams who have been fooled by a young quarterback’s too-good-to-be-trueness, look at the numeral. It’s less about inheritance than a family’s self-betterment from one generation to another, each laying down track for the next. His grandfather, the first Robert Griffin, was a construction worker who hauled himself out of the New Orleans projects. The second Robert Griffin spent 21 years in the U.S. Army working his way from enlistee to Sergeant First Class. He and his wife Jacqueline, also a former Sergeant, trained their son with an Army-inspired creed that hard work and good planning are moral values. Two weeks ago, RG III was asked to describe himself to observers at the NFL’s annual scouting combine. “Military kid, both my parents were in the military,” is what he answered. “Mom did 12 years, Dad did 21, served in two wars. Discipline was something that was obviously huge. If you say you’re going to do something, you do it. If you start it, you finish it. Yes, sir; no, ma’am. You’ve got to have that kind of structure in your life.”
SWFLSkins
I don't think most of the fans claiming we overpayed have really looked into who RG3 is and what kind of person he is. Thanks for posting this. And I don't care what he or Luck cost, both are tremendous prospects worth the mild gamble associated with acquiring a franchise QB. You can't keep hoping to get lucky in the late rounds, the Redskins don't have that luxury.
terpskins10
Fantastic article. I hope everyone reads this before making the knee-jerk, "he's Vince Young, could be Shuler/Leaf" etc.
ArmchairRedskin
Really nice work by ole Sally J. there. I used to hate her stuff. That is some quality content, though.
SKINS'n'Spurs
Thanks for the thread! This is exactly why this guy will not be a bust. He's not even capable of it. It's not in his DNA. Even if he doesn't turn out to be the next Steve Young or whatever, this guy is going to remain to be a 100% class act and will without a doubt do our region and this franchise proud every time he puts on the B&G. Can't wait for his next presser; just love hearin' the dude talk; truly motivating to listen to.

Unforgiven
I was unaware of his torn ACL. This makes me a tad nervous. It was a few years ago, he's played two full seasons since then. I think it's a non-issue.
SonnyandSam
I was unaware of his torn ACL. This makes me a tad nervous. You realize he came back this year and won the Heisman Trophy, right? I think the ACL is fine.
DogofWar1
This was an excellent article. Truly a wonderful write-up. His work ethic really is second to none, and why I always scoff when comparisons to Leaf or Russell are made. If Leaf or Russell tore their ACL you would NEVER hear about them sitting in a chair throwing passes to improve their accuracy. Rather you'd hear about their wheelchair bound escapades in Vegas. RGIII might not become a franchise QB, but he is going to work for it 110% every day, and when you take that drive with his natural gifts, he's got the best shot of anyone we've had in a long time. SonnyandSam
I seldom recommend a Sally Jenkins article...however, this is must reading for every Redskins fan....especially the doubters. I read a similar background piece on RG3 by another author last year and was instantly sold on him. Physically, he is a beast. But it is his intelligence, work ethic and character that will make him one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL....I have no doubts.
terpskins10
I was unaware of his torn ACL. This makes me a tad nervous. The last thing you should worry about is a previously torn ACL since it's generally a freak injury and ACLs are stronger after surgery than before. TeddyKGB
Brady tore his ACL once, would you be scared of him also? The mere fact that he ran a 4.41 forty two years after his injury shows me that he beyond past it. His ACL injury actually has the opposite affect on me. Your right in that some players are phenoms until injuries bite - Landry and Palmer come immediately to mind. For RG3 though to have the two seasons he had AFTER that injury tells me he has the psychi(sp) and make-up to mentally overcome obstacles such as injuries etc. Something that other players with decent skillsets yet more fragile minds might not ever be able to get over. I think things like this are reasons why a Brady can come back better after an ACL tear better then before and a guy like Palmer has never been the same. LD0506
Good thread SHF, more people need to read this, they just don't quite grasp who this kid is. We are getting SO much more than just a QB, he's a leader and will have a huge effect on the others around him.
COWBOY-KILLA-
Great Article, Sally knocked it outta the ballpark. RG3 looks to be EXACTLY what we need. Impressive young man and family, this franchise needed this rebirth sooo badly. Happy.
The Dude
He's the highest-character QB prospect we've ever seen. Luck has some diva quality to him (not to mention slower and less arm strength). RGIII's has the skills to be the best Redskin this franchise has seen,

RGIII's has the skills to be the best Redskin this franchise has seen, Barring some unforeseen catastrophe Luck is going to have a helluva career in the pros, he's just that good, but Griffin is the right one for us, his mobility, coachability, character and commitment are elements in this that transcend Luck's polished pro-level skills. I genuinely believe that Griffin can and will be a player for us that gets mentioned with the kind of respect and reverence that a Monk or a Green get. storretti
Who gets injured, and comes back better because of the injury. This kids hard work and selfishness is in a class of its own. Its almost turning into that the Redskins are lucky to get this kid than this kid is lucky to go to the Redskins. Robert Griffin, I hope my son grows up to be just like you. The Redskins are getting ready to not just draft a future franchise QB, but a future role model this is unparalleled.

Mad Mike
I read the article last night and what it tells me, along with everything else we know about him, is that Griffin is as close to a sure fire, cant miss, all pro, franchise QB as I have ever seen. Crazy athleticism, big accurate arm, incredibly intelligent, great character, and a deep rooted work ethic. What more could you want? Here's the thing that's beginning to scare me though... The Colts have yet to come out and say they are drafting Luck. In fact the only thing we do know is that they will be drafting a QB, and they fired the one person (Bill Polian) who has even mentioned Luck as their likely choice. But the thing that scares me most is that if I'm the Colts trying to re-build post Manning, I may want a QB and a team that will forge it's own identity without being compared to Manning's colts at every turn. And with each new piece of information seeming to confirm Griffin's potential greatness, he may be too tempting for them to pass up. Granted that Luck would be one *hell* of a consolation prize, but I'm really beginning to believe that Griffin is the best QB in this draft. The Redskins are getting ready to not just draft a future franchise QB, but a future role model this is unparalleled. Caught my eye that you said this, I have been looking at Griffin as dad too (first listing on my resume-DAD) and I agree, he is a class act and his parents can be proud of the job they did raising him This is the kind of role model you want to see athletes being, self-assured and confident without being brash or ****y, heaping praise on teammates instead of trying to hog the limelight, dedicated to growth and improvement instead of trumpeting how good he is already. Fans are in for something special here, more than just a franchise QB.
balonywolf
Sally reiterated what I've been basically screaming about Griffin and why past busts don't apply to him as a comparison. RG3's intangibles and immeasurables aare off the charts (weird to put it that way, since they, by definition, can't be charted). This guy has all of the qualities of players who have the hype in the draft and go on to huge, ring-wearing, hall-of-fame careers. Everybody who has busted that I've seen mentioned never wowed me the way Griffin does, or never had his character, or his personality. A combination of those things, sure, but never all of them, let alone in the copious amounts Griffin displays. I'm not saying his being a bust isn't a possibility, but it seems very remote. I just hope it can stand the rigors of an NFL career.
