Da 5 Bloods, the new Spike Lee movie that's on Netflix.

It's good.  Only quibble is Spike trying to address pretty much every societal issue that's happening right now instead of just focusing on or two.  One second it's multiple angles about Vietnam and the fallout, the next it's Trump, the next it's BLM, the next it's the opioid epidemic...all serious topics, all would deserve more time than they get.

But it's a good movie.  5 African American Vietnam vets return to Vietnam to search for some buried gold bricks that were left behind, also to search for the remains of a friend that was killed in action.  They all have their own issues to reconcile.

It's probably too early to say about who deserves an Oscar nomination but Delroy Lindo absolutely deserves to be in the conversation.

Not a movie but Vikings has me hooked. It’s a historical fiction, very well done.

Vikings *was* phenomenal.

However, my wife and I gave up a couple of episodes into the last season (6). It was a struggle to watch season 5 - the story arc wasn’t as compelling. Just like we gave up on The Walking Dead a few episodes into this recent season.... at some point it just wasn’t enjoyable any longer, but I wanted closure. As it progressed, I realized I didn’t care enough at all for that either.

Upload.

I watched the first episode a couple of months ago.... at the recommendation of this thread. Didn’t draw me in.

My wife and I decided to give it another chance..... I’m glad we did. Looks like a good one.

During the 13th Century, Zakhar Berkut and his wife Rada lead a group of high-landers in Carpathian Mountains. Unfortunately, their tranquil existence is soon threatened by Burunda Khan, a powerful Mongolian general who leads his massive armies west in search of new lands to conquer. Forced to protect their village, Zakhar and Rada send their sons, Ivan and Maksim, to ask for help from Tugar Volk, a wealthy boyar who has recently arrived from King. After his strong-willed daughter Myroslava and Maksim survive a dangerous encounter together, Tugar Volk pledges to defend the villagers against the Mongols. But when a mutual attraction sparks between Myroslava and Maksim, Tugar Volk forbids them from continuing their relationship. Meanwhile, Burunda Khan faces questions from his warriors about his motivation and military strategy for the impending invasion. As war breaks out, both sides suffer devastating casualties. Redoubling his efforts, Burunda Khan unleashes his full fury.

Yeah...so my wife and her friend watched this tonight. Apparently it was big on tik tok.

im just gonna go ahead and ruin this movie for everyone to spare you the shame and trauma.

so this movie apparently has made news due to being the most sexually graphic movie on Netflix. It’s based on a book series, think 50 Shades of Grey meets Taken meets a bucket of ****.

So the movie starts out with Mossimo and his dad on a building rooftop on some island in the Mediterranean. His dad is negotiating a deal for 12 year old sex slaves since he and his son are traffickers. At some point, dad gets up to go check on his son who is looking with binoculars, creeping on some woman on the beach. At that point his dad gives him the full Tywin Lannister telling him he needs to take his responsibilities seriously, grow up and he needs to step up to run the business. At that exact moment, his dad is shot by some never seen sniper but could possible be Liam Neeson in a deleted scene. It looks like it goes thru dad and shot mossimo too. They both appear to die. Guess the deal is canceled.

time skip 5 years later. Basically mossimo survived the bullet, his dad died and he runs the business. We are introduced to this by him flying on his private jet and taking the stewardess into the back forcing her on her knees and throat ****ing her then affectionately wiping her lips off after.

He kidnaps a woman named Laura and takes her to his compound. He tells her she has 365 days to fall in love with him and if she cannot he will let her go. He super aggressive and handsy and gross. He tells Laura that she was the woman he saw on a beach years ago the moment his father died and he has been obsessed with her ever since. She takes this extremely well. She tries to run a couple times but 2 days later he takes her shopping and she just rolls thru the Gucci and Louis stores and a spree, even tries on lingerie all with a smile on face forgetting that she’s been kidnapped and taken hostage into another country and told she must fall in love with her kidnapper in some sick twisted beauty and the beast kink game.

Laura still won’t put out and Mossimo is a man of little patience. He ties her to a bed and makes her watch while he throat ****s another woman and this apparently gets Laura super horny and she asks mossimo to **** her. He teases her then leaves.

then she goes to bed. And wakes up and he’s there beside her naked and she gets naked and gets in the shower. He follows her. This shower is like the size of a room so he has his own separate shower head and everything. This is where he catches Laura looking and says “why you looking? You want something from me?” He walks over to her and says “if you like looking at it, touch it” that’s a line that’s actually said seriously. So they kiss and then she walks away and he gets pissed. Says he isn’t used to restraint but he won’t touch her unless he has permission. Even child sexual traffickers and kidnappers have their limits. He takes her on a yacht and they get into an argument and she falls overboard so he jumps in and saves her. When she wakes up, she’s so moved by his act of bravery that all she wants is dick. they **** everywhere. It’s graphic. They **** over every inch of that yacht.

long story short. She falls in love with him. Somehow they’ve made a child sex trafficker into the romantic hero of the story. is this what women want? Sure he’s super ****ing rich and handsome and has abs etc but come on. Of course to be fair, Laura doesn’t know he’s a sex trafficker.she did watch him execute a man when she was was kidnapped. Then he later says he’s owns restaurants and clubs and she doesn’t question this. So she knows he bad but not as terrible as he really is.  But the audience does. Who is this movie written for?

anyway, she falls in love. Pipe and money too good to resist. They get engaged. She gets pregnant. And she is supposed to tell him she’s pregnant that night at dinner. His associates find out one of their rivals is tailing her as she’s riding somewhere to her a dress or something and they can’t get to her in time. The movie ends With her car going into a tunnel and never coming out. Police are seen pulling up as Mossimo gets the news and falls to his knees crying like so many women he’s put the clamps on. Fade to black.

this movie is ****ed. It’s awful. It’s a trainwreck. My wife and her friend hated it. They hated it the entire way thru yet they wouldn’t stop watching. I skipped probably the middle hour of the movie and caught the last 10 minutes. Can’t imagine how much worse it is with that included.

There are a lot of positive audience reviews on RT tho. wtf us wrong with people. I looked this up and it’s only movie/book 1. Hopefully there aren’t 2 more jesus Christ.

i hate myself for even spending this much time writing about it. Ugh

Wow @Momma There Goes That Man that movie was just terrible and then some. The only good thing about that it is the girls are attractive. My girlfriend wanted to actually finish the movie so that’s probably the only reason I finished it. It’s essentially one really long soft core porn movie.

I tried to warn you lol

Color Out Of Space.  Maximum Cage weirdness.

Not quite on the level of Mandy.

I need to see both of these, asap. My brother has both on bluray and I may just snag them this weekend. I will say that Mandy has the best trailer I've ever seen, absolute insanity.

I have the first movie (or I think his first) by the director that did Mandy called Beyond the Black Mountain. Actually I'll start with this before the other two.

I caught up on some movies I had been wanting to watch but missed.

Ad Astra.  Eeyore falls off a space antennae, survives, and then goes to space to find his Dad.  Adventures happen along the way, and I mean some really wild ****, but this fails to excite him in any way.  Worth watching once.

Bad Boys for Life.  Much better than I expected, but it's still fairly standard and forgettable.  If you're itching for an action movie fix however, this one will do the job.  It was nice to see Martin Lawrence again.

The Gentlemen.  It's a Guy Ritchie movie through and through.  if you like that his movies, and I most certainly do, you'll probably like this one.  (I did.)  Not his best movie though.

Birds of Prey.  I read a lot of stuff blaming misogyny for this films failure, well I have an alternative theory:  It's a terrible movie.  Oof what a disaster.

Just watched Da Bloods. Pretty disappointing given Lee's previous work. Predictable and amateurish, something you might see from a first time director and script writer.  Acting didn't help either.  It's a long and boring movie that the wife and I gave up on before the end.

Joker

Performace wise, Joaguin Phoenix was fine.  But the movie as a whole was not particularly compelling to me. I was pretty bored for most of it. I never cared about the Joker's backstory before, and this movie confirmed that I still don't care.   At least not for an entire movie.  Nor do I care to see a Batman villain movie with no Batman.

I watched Nobody Knows I'm Here on Netflix and it is an excellent movie.  Beautifully shot and directed.  If you speak Spanish or are willing to watch a movie with subtitles, I recommend it.  Though admittedly, I'm bias.  It's a Chilean movie with a Chilean director that is shot in Chile.  With a mostly Chilean cast.  I happen to be Chilean.

It stars Jorge García (Lost) as a grown man struggling with some unusual trauma he experienced as a child singer (it's not being molested).

I just watched it. First ever Broadway thing ive ever seen. Absurdly good. I now understand why it is a cultural phenomenon.

Full disclosure, I am drunk on steak and bourbon. See, e.g. Grilling Thread.

So it's a musical???

I don't do musicals

I feel the same way, but Lin Manuel-Miranda seems to be a special talent so I'll give it a shot.  I would have watched it tonight but I was out voted 2-1.  It's hard to beat cartoon options in this house.
