saw two really good movies this weekend.

Take Shelter - This movie should've been nominated for an Oscar. Michael Shannon (the jarhead detective from HBO's "Boardwalk Empire") is a small town ohio man, who is in his early 30s. His mother was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia at 35. He begins to have weird visions and dreams, that gradually become more and more intense/violent. He has awful visions of a very violent storm, something "that no man has ever seen before," and begins to build this intricate tornado shelter in his backyard. His life starts to fall apart, and we basically watch this very kind and hard working man slip deeper and deeper into insanity. But there's a twist at the end that kinda blows your mind. In my opinion, this film could hold its own against "A Beautiful Mind."

It won (not nominated...WON) two awards at Cannes.

Welcome to the Riley's - A dark, disturbing, yet fell good movie. How that's possible, I don't know. james Gandolfini (Tony Soprano) and Kristin Stewart (corny vampire movies) are the two big names in this one. For those of you that find Kristin Stewart to be hot, you might wanna watch this movie... ;)

This was a great movie. It's crazy how good Kristin Stewart did in this film, she's so much better than that Twilight garbage she's been doing the last several years.

Navy SEAL Lieutenant A.K. Waters and his elite squadron of tactical specialists are forced to choose between their duty and their humanity, between following orders by ignoring the conflict that surrounds them, or finding the courage to follow their conscience and protect a group of innocent refugees.

When the democratic government of Nigeria collapses and the country is taken over by a ruthless military dictator, Waters, a fiercely loyal and hardened veteran is dispatched on a routine mission to retrieve a Doctors Without Borders physician, Dr. Lena Kendricks. Dr. Kendricks, an American citizen by marriage, is tending to the victims of the ongoing civil war at a Catholic mission in a remote village. When Waters arrives, however, Dr. Kendricks refuses to leave unless he promises to help deliver the villagers to political asylum at the nearby border. If they are left behind, they will be at the mercy of the enormous rebel army...

I've been meaning to watch this movie for a very long time. I would always catch snippets of it on FX, TNT, etc, but could never sit down and watch it in it's entirety. Tonight I just said "Eff it, I'm going to watch this, uncut, from start to finish," and I'm glad I finally did.

This was a very well done war flick, perhaps a tad underrated. Bruce Willis delivered a solid performance, along with Monica Belluci. There are a ton of great action sequences, mainly the opening sequence where the Seals parachute down into the jungle and emerge from underwater (surprising one of the patients) near the Church refuge, and the call for air support at the least possible second with the rebels bearing down on them, towards the end of the movie, and plenty in between. I'm no armchair movie critic, but I'd at least give it a very high 3 out of 5 stars. Excellent film. Great score as well.

Wasn't that movie good? lol ...I listed it on this thread as well.

Question about the ending (spoilers, in ninja):

Ok, so was the guy actually nuts and the ending showed him slipping back into his psychosis again, this time including his wife and child in his mind?...Or was the freakish storm actually approaching them on the beach, complete with one serious tidal wave? I've heard both lol...that the "storm" approaching at the end was symbolism for impending sanity finally taking over completely, as well as he was never crazy and his visions were prophetic.

Yep, what a great movie. I mean, probably top 3 I've seen so far this year. Michael Shannon gave an Oscar performance.

Ninja:

Yeah, the ending totally threw me off. I trolled movie forums for about an hour after watching the movie, and there are arguments for both sides. I believe that you're right though, the impending storm was the paranoia taking over, and the ending was him completely slipping into insanity. Poor ****.

But there were some good arguments that he was indeed a prophet, and the ending showed that he isn't crazy, but I wasn't sold on it. The fact that his daughter saw the storm before he did was a neat twist, but I think he was just including the family in his visions like you said.

I don't believe its on Netflix streaming yet. It is available on Netflix blu-ray through the mail though, and it has also been playing on Showtime. It was the "Saturday Night Premiere" on Showtime last week, and has been playing almost every day since then.

YES HE DID!! lol ...there was an ache in watching him feeling so alone and helpless when he was worried he was losing his mind like his mother did around his age...like he didn't know what the hell to do. :(...Just sad...

The movie Donnie Darko was similar to Take Shelter in obvious ways, and I thought Jake Gyllenhaal did a phenomenal job as well, worthy of Oscar consideration. Jessica Chastain (Take Shelter) and Mary McDonnell (Donnie Darko) both deserved consideration for their acting as well.

Now that you mention it, it does remind me of Donnie Darko. A lot of similarities there. Both dark movies, with an impending sense of doom lurking.

Jessica Chastain did a really good job, she made me feel so sorry for her LOL. and Mary killed her role in DD too. Jessica Chastain, though she's got kind of a sturdy chin, is pretty damn hot.

You've got good taste in movies, sir. I'll be sure to pay attention next time you make a recommendation in here :)

A hunter is hired to kill and take samples of what is thought to be the last Tasmanian Tiger in existence. He pretends to be researching Tasmanian Devils for a university so as not to arouse any suspicion, but the locals are not kind to "greenies". During his expedition he stays in the spare bedroom of a house occupied by a mother and her two kids, whose father went missing mysteriously a year (?) earlier. They naturally become close.

I really liked it.

7-nights-of-darkness_full.jpg

In 2008 six reality television show contestants spent seven nights in an abandoned and haunted asylum. The show never aired but an editor for the network was able to piece together some footage. The prize for staying all seven nights was a share of one million dollars that was to be split amongst any contestants that didn't leave. No prize money was ever awarded.

Saw this movie when I got home last night. Okay, this is another one of those Paranormal Activity/Blair Witch-ish movies, however, unlike the Paranormal Activity movies, you don't have to use your imagination as much. There are quite a few legit scare moments, with a good amount of foreboding, but at other times, the acting is a little suspect (meaning actors not selling enough in the scare department, and not showing enough of a sense of trepidation/confusion), and there are a couple scenes that make you go :wtf:, but all in all, I found it pretty entertaining.

"Machine Gun Preacher." Pretty good flick. You can tell it was part of the hop on Joseph Koney movement, but still a pretty damn good movie.

Not that he's got a laundry list of classics, but this was Gerard Butler's best movie ever, IMO.

Finally got around to seeing "The Grey." It was pretty cool. Liam was Liam as usual.

I had heard about how bad the CG wolves were. It was bad, but it wasn't THAT bad. The last 10 seconds of that movie as Liam prepared for war was badass.

Finally saw this last night.

Met my expectations and was one of the best action/martial arts movies I've seen. It had outstanding, brutal fight sequences that were actually performed by real people. CGI was only really used for splattering blood. Not much of a story, but in this type of flick that's almost unnecessary anyway. Hopefully this movie is an inspiration for future action film makers.

Yeah, I saw The Raid when it was in theaters. One of the best action flicks I've ever seen. Great flick!

That final fight between the two brothers and that bad ass dude might be the coolest hand to hand combat scene ever.

So I've been a fan out psychological thrillers for a while now. I'm talking total MIND **** movies. Shutter Island, Memento, Donnie Darko, Brazil, The Sixth Sense. I've been reading about this one flick for a while, and finally saw it this morning..

"Mulholland Drive." Oh....my....god. What a wild, wild ride. When the movie went of and the credits rolled, i sat there staring at the tv for a good 2 minutes. I felt like David Lynch just ripped my brain out, humped it, and then pissed on it. I felt violated. thought i had it figured out, and a few quick google searches filled in some of the holes. I'm not sure how it worked, but that entire movie made sense. What a great freaking movie! Probably in my top 5 all-time favorite MIND BLOWING movies!

Mexican villagers, plagued by a band of bandits, send a few of their number north to the border, to buy guns so they can defend themselves. They end up hiring seven gunmen to help them instead.

Old school badass at it's finest. I've been getting in my Western fix these last couple of weeks, and I finally saw this masterpiece last night. Great action, great acting, great score, great cast of characters, great everything. One of the best parts was when Britt nails a guy on horseback with his pistol, from a considerable distance, and the kid says "Great shot," and then he says "No, that was a terrible shot, I was aiming for the horse." Just awesome. I'm geoing to get started on the Man With No Name trilogy tonight.

The Hunger Games. This movie was incredibly stupid. There are syfy original creations using the word mega in the title that made more sense. Swords, knives, arrows, spears, and... landmines. Nothing in this movie makes more sense than that to the point where I was convinced the writer was trolling us all. I thought that before the sudden appearance of magical dogs.

We watched Freelancers the other day:

MV5BMjEyNjQ4NzM1MF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwOTQyNjcxOA@@._V1._SY317_CR0,0,214,317_.jpg

The son of a slain NYPD officer joins the force, where he falls in with his father's former partner and a team of rogue cops

Not something I'd pick up to watch on my own, but I got it on a whim as something I would watch with the bf. He and I have very different taste in movies, though I will usually watch crime dramas with him. It has Robert DeNiro, who is one of my favorite actors, so I figured it should be somewhat decent. I mean, DeNiro wouldn't sign on to a crap movie, right?

Er... he could not save it. 50 Cent is too bad of an actor. DeNiro did his part well, but the rest of the movie was pretty boring, to be honest. Very cliche' "bad cop" stuff and some of the sex scenes are kind of ...odd. If you've seen it, maybe you know what I'm talking about, but my bf and I were kinda like, "wtf?"

And is it just me, but is Forest Whitaker unlikeable in every role he plays? I don't really follow him, and actually looking at his IMDB, I don't think I've seen any of his other movies (haha), but I'm not a fan.

Awesome! Another convert! There are soooo many good scenes in that. Betty's first audition was just "wow", the theatre scene had me floored, and the entire Billy Ray Cyrus scene was hilarious.

If you want a brilliant scene, check out David Lynch's film "Wild At Heart". There is a part where Willem Dafoe is making a move on a girl in an apartment...it was insane. Oh and check out his film "Inland Empire" too lol. There is a street scene toward the end that will warp your brain.

Anyway, my latest film was Expendables 2. So cheesy and yet so much fun.

The movie was made in 2011, but used the same production methods as an 80's flick. If you like 80's Robocop type carnage, check out this movie lol.
