Heisenberg
I was hoping that someone on the board might be nice enough to give me a thought about a weird electrical issue that I'm hoping to get fixed. Last week I moved a TV, cable box, PS3, and a few other things down to our newly finished basement. The PS3 and a few other small electronics had previously been on my main level with the TV there. Everything worked fine for a few days, but over the past few days something has "tripped" the surge protector/power strip on my main level TV even though there are less electronics on this strip than before. I thought it was a fluke at first, but after resetting the power strip it happened again a few days later and now the surge protector seems to be fried and won't reset. I guess I will try a new surge protector to see if that could be the problem but seems like an odd coincidence that this occured so shortly after moving the other TV downstairs. Does anyone have any idea about what could be causing this?

Now I just hope he logs on sometime soon - unless there are others on the board that might be able to help.

Power strips are cheap and reflect that when they breakdown, I don't know of anything that would cause the strip to suddenly fry without something being done to the actual outlet or circuit that it is plugged into. I am assuming the newly finished basement had new circuits ran and has nothing to do with the upstairs main level circuit. I would also assume that nothing has been changed upstairs at all other than removing electronics from that strip. If that is all correct then your power strip has simply expired. Sorry about the confusion. I shouldn't have said "newly finished" - basically we removed a bunch of the paneling and stuff that was there before and put up new drywall, ceilings, etc. All of the wiring that was there before is still there and we didn't change anything. No problem, I've had service calls for equipment issues before and it turn out to simply be a faulty power strip. Like I said they are just built very cheaply, when they fail they're done. If you're power is fine at the outlet itself that it is plugged into then there is nothing that would of caused it to fail unless you have something wrong with one of the pieces of equipment that would be plugged into it. Lets say the reverse was to happen and your power strip tripped when you had all equipment plugged in. Then the best way to handle it is to remove all equipment, plug in each item one by one and you'll be able to determine which piece of equipment has a problem (it will trip when that piece is plugged in). However it simply is not an electrical problem at that stage its an electronics problem. My conclusion is that pure coincedence that you removed things from it and it stopped working. HOF44
When your basement was finished did the pull new circuits for the power down there and add new breakers to your panel box?? If they just added to the existing electric you could be exceeding the power the breaker is rated to trip at. *edit* Just saw your clarification about the finish. How many circuits(breakers) are in the box for your basement? It does sound like a bad surge protector.

Okay I hope that is the case, would certainly be a much cheaper fix than needing an electrician to come out. It's just weird because it went a few days between the strip "tripping" and now it seems it is fried for good. I was just really hoping that it wasn't caused by the other TV using a lot of power and sending surges through the wiring. I'm paranoid that I am going to fry the older TV and equipment on the main level. ---------- Post added February-10th-2012 at 03:00 PM ---------- When your basement was finished did the pull new circuits for the power down there and add new breakers to your panel box?? If they just added to the existing electric you could be exceeding the power the breaker is rated to trip at. I didn't really "add" anything to my basement. I really shouldn't have used the term "newly finished" - it was finished before but was very outdated so we put up new drywall and what not. Also, the breaker on the electrical box hasn't been tripping - only the power strip needed to be reset a fe wtimes before crapping out totally - although I'm not sure if the power strip would trip out before the breaker box would. Also, the surge protector on the new TV in the basement has not tripped if that means anything.
HOF44
One thing to try before buying a new power strip is switch it with another one you have. If the problem goes with the old power strip you know what was wrong.
SC_RedskinsFan
Sent ya a PM, like other have said the surge protector is most likely the problem. If it took a surge and protected your equipment it did what its supposed to. 10-20 bucks is a small price to pay to protect your stuff!
