Washington Redskins

Most Improved

Trent Williams: From -23.4 to +3.8

When Trent Williams said that the game had slowed down for him heading into his second year, you’d be excused for not necessarily believing him. After all, how many times have we heard players say that only for them to falter when they get on the field? So credit to Williams who took a huge leap forward, no longer looking like a rookie out of his depth on an NFL field. The biggest area the former first round pick improved in was his pass protection, where our signature stat, Pass Blocking Efficiency for tackles comes to the fore. The weighted formula saw him score a 96 (giving up two sacks, four hits and 13 hurries on 372 pass blocks) this year, after picking up a 93.4 (allowing four sacks, four hits and 35 hurries on 524 pass blocks) the previous year. In a conference low on quality left tackles, a healthy Williams could easily be on track for Pro Bowl recognition.

Biggest Drop Off

Adam Carriker: From +4.4 to -9.5

Carriker earned negatives for both his work in run defense and rushing the passer in 2011, a year after he looked to have finally found a home in the Redskins’ 3-4. Instead, year No. 2 resulted in a drop-off that saw Carriker fail to consistently generate pressure, or make much headway against the run. Still, at least he didn’t give up any penalties right?

More Snaps

Evan Royster: +7.7 from 158 snaps

It may seem an odd situation, but the Redskins could find themselves heading into the 2012 with quite the backfield depth. With Tim Hightower back from injury and Roy Helu seemingly the No. 1 going forward, it may be hard for Royster to get much playing time. Clearly, he was so impressive on his 57 rushes (where he averaged 5.9 yards per carry and forced eight missed tackles) that he’s earned more touches. He didn’t embarrass himself in pass protection either, so the sixth-round pick presents an interesting dilemma for ‘Skins management.

I know Royster isn't a top 10 back but I really enjoyed watching him at the end of the season. I was expecting chaos since he's a new guy and he really stepped up to the plate. Lets rotate all 3 of them and have ourselves a fresh back as much as possible.

Trent an awesome player but its up to him if he wants to be a pro bowler or not. I think he'll get it together. Shanny isn't anyone's grandma and I'm sure he'll whip Trent and Davis into shape.

Neato! Think we trade a RB or does Shanny like the quality depth to hammer defenses with guys who are always fresh?

I think we're going to keep all three. I'm sure other teams feel that one of them could be a product of our Offense, but who cares? We're set at RB for the first time in a long time. I'll take it!

I don't know why Royster could not be a top back.

He is a natural, terrific instincts. He's the all time leading rusher at Penn State, a school with a rich and long tradition of running backs.

The things i was surprised to read:

A/ it's not a foregone conclusion he's on the roster.. it damn well should be. PJfootbaler is right. Torain is gone, Royster is a definite keeper. He's got excellent vision and hits people before they hit him. He and Helu can be a lethal combination.

B/ he only is credited with forcing 8 missed tackles. He ran through quite a few arm tackles, and made his plays in the middle of the field by busting off of linebackers.

Besides that, Royster has to make the roster simply because the Shanny offense goes thru RBs like cannon fodder. Multiple injuries it seems every year going back to denver. rememer they used to say "Plug anyone in there and it's a thousand yards".. right, but did anyone notice just how many of them got plugged in there over about a five year period? Holy smokes. Shanny's last year in Denver he put 7 RBs on IR over the season.

We'll need every healthy one we can get again.

Nice to see Trent Williams getting some positives.

Is it me, or does this early offseason seem different in how many small golf-claps the Redskins are quietly getting?

Hightower would only be our 3rd down back anyway.

Hightower is the best of the bunch in terms of pass blocking. Given that all three RBs were injured during the year it makes sense to use them by committee. If Skins pick up another RB in the draft then Hightower probably would be the one to go.

I'm surprised at the down-grade for Carriker especially the comments on pass pressure. He had more sacks this year than last.

im not the biggest Hightower fan, i feel that he is slow and doesnt break many tackles, but he does have great vision and is a hell of a 3rd down back. I would be happy with a helu-royster backfield with hightower as the 3rd down, but i would also like to see us find another late round talent.

That 2008 season was abnormal in many ways. Shanahan really doesn't have any history of rapidly cycling through backs due to injury nor is he as frenetic about changing out backs as his reputation would suggest. He's always featured the same one or two faces throughout the season and hasn't had a ton of major issues along the way aside from TD's knees, Travis Henry's suspensions, and 2008.

He's just not terribly loyal to backs who aren't truly terrific.

Completely disagree.

Hightower isn't slow and is, in fact, faster than Royster and MUCH faster than Torain. He also runs with a good amount of power when healthy but the fact that he's somewhat of an upright runner (as is Helu) does make it somewhat more difficult to break arm tackles. Hightower's vision is actually what holds him back most.

That's cool but what I'm interested in is if we are going to get RGIII or not........just kidding. Williams better get his act strightened out because he might be ready to throw a promising career in the trash if he can't let go of the wacky weed. Carriker has never really seemed that effective to me, not sure he'll make the team this year. Royster is a beast but I'm curious if we will keep 3 backs again or if Royster will end up back on the practice squad. Geez i forgot how much injuries killed us this year.

If we put him on the practice squad i dont see anyway another team doesnt pick him up. We may as well try to trade him and at least get something out of it. But i would much rather see him on the active roster.
