The Patriots released WR Tiquan Underwood Saturday night, less than 24 hours prior to the kickoff of Super Bowl XLVI.

Underwood's hairdo -- reminiscent of the Kid 'N Play days with a shaved-in Patriots logo to boot -- got him noticed in the week leading up to the game.

Underwood caught three passes for 30 yards in the regular season. He's played in both of New England's playoff games but hasn't caught a pass since Dec. 18.

DE Alex Silvestro was promoted from the practice squad to take Underwood's roster spot. Silvestro played in one game this season and made two tackles.

I also heard it wasn't for disciplinary reasons, thats cold even for Bill Bellichek.

Ouch! That's cold. Looks like Belichick wants Ochocinco in the game, plus he gets another DL in the rotation, if needed. Probably, also an indication that Gronkowski isn't recovered neither. It makes Underwood's haircut even more ridiculous. However, won't he be re-signed tomorrow to the practice squad, if he clears the waiver wire?

I read this story a few hours ago and thought it really sucked, but then I was thinking, he'll still probably get a ring if they win. He was also probably going to be inactive anyways. I mean, that's no consolation or anything, but it makes sense.

Cold and harsh my ass.

This is pro ball, on the eve of the biggest game of the year. Who knows what the injury situation is regarding NE's ends? If there's doubts there and you need to cover yourself, you do. Maybe they figure they'll need an extra body in the rotation at some stage to rotate into the mix. Who knows what the Patriots reasoning is behind this. But they'll have a darn good one.

NE are there to win the SB. Not to fall on sentiment to individuals.

Hail.

I'm sure he'll get a ring if they win.

Would you want one?

I mean it's a SB ring and all, and a fantastic financial safe guard to have tucked away. But as a pro, if I wasn't involved in the 53 on the day, I wouldn't want a ring. It would be a hollow reward for a game I'd played no part in. "Wana' look at my SB ring? I got it when we beat the Giants and I was sat watching and cheering the guys on from the stand."

Honestly, unless I was a heavily involved, active member of the team who was injured and had to miss the big game with injury; I'd have little to no interest/ enthusiasm for a reward I'd taken no part in earning.

Hail.

Is ice cold?

Hell yeah I'd want one. Scout team/backups deserve one if the Patriots or Giants win. They're just as much a factor as the rest.

Honestly, save for injury keeping me out, unless I'd been a part of the 53 on the day it would feel like a hollow reward to me and not something I'd take much pride or joy in. I understand the argument that if you've played some part through the season, either actively, or just a part of the practice squad you've contributed along the way. But to me, the final so to speak is just that, a final. And I'd only feel like I was a part of it all and earned my medal, or in our case ring, if I'd been a part on the day.

Shrugs, just the way I'd personally feel.

Do you have an issue with the coaches getting a ring?

If not, how is that any different from someone like a trainer or practice squad player? They were all there making the players on the field better.

I agree. I think everybody should be happy if they got a ring. There are only 46 players on the gameday roster. Unfortunately, everybody can't play. And some that do play are not a major factor in the game.

Not in the slightest. All the main coaching staff deserves a ring. I just personally wouldn't feel a part of a SB victory if I wasn't an active part of it on the day, and as such wouldn't feel I deserved a ring.

Question:

Have you ever played football?

Question:

Have you ever played football?

No, but I see where your going with that. I've played soccer to a high amateur level if that helps (a failed two week trial with a pro club was as close as I came to totally living the dream), so I know just what dedication and hard work goes into being part of a team. And I know if I was unlucky enough to be left out of the 13 as was back then for a final on the day, I'd be utterly dejected and whilst willing my teammates to victory and being absolutely elated for them in the process; if I where given a medal it would mean very little to me personally as I'd not played a part in the show piece finale the medal was awarded for. It wouldn't be something I'd take great pride in or would readily want to show people unlike if I'd played. Then it would be on full display.

Disappointment is a part of sports, and not something I'd want rewarding for. If I'd played my part on the road to that final, I'd take pride in that. But I wouldn't want a medal if I wasn't involved in the climax on the day. Shrugs, just the way I personally feel.

I can see why you would feel the way you do about the if you weren't active or starting that it would feel like you didn't earn in. But in any level of football and other sports too the reserves/practice squad guys do play a huge role. The are the ones simulating the opposing team and their 'mannerisms' the entire week in practice. If they slack off and don't give their best, the starters will be inadequately prepared to deal with the real team on Sunday.

My senior year of high school was my sole year of high school football. I never had a chance to start in a game but in practice I was always the scout teams starting receiver, or safety if it was defense. All season long I had this knack for catching routes over the middle and promptly getting laid out by our starting 2 safeties. But every time, no matter how hard they hit me, I'd hold on to the ball.

The first week of playoffs came around and it was Wednesday practice and it was 11 on 11 scout team offense vs Starting D. I ran a deep post route from the right flank and jumped up to grasp the ball in stride, and the moment I made contact with it, what do ya know, our strong safety gives me the hit of the week. Knocked the wind right out of me. But I jumped right back up, unable to breathe, with the ball in hand to the applause of the team and the coaches. I also received the honor of scout team player of the week for playing so well in practice, which felt great to me. I knew that I did my best to help our starters be prepared for the playoffs.

Gametime rolls around and it's late 3rd quarter. We're up by a score and the other team is driving. The opposing offense on 3rd and long runs a pass play with the right flanker running a deep post route. He reaches up to grab the ball and put them in scoring position, and just as the ball touches his hands, our strong safety hits him harder then he's ever hit anyone. The boy was down for a good 15-20 seconds.

No catch.

We ended up winning by one score that game and moved on to the 2nd round.

The next day, Saturday morning, we all came back to dissect the film of yesterdays game. We watched it and got to that point and highlighted how big that stop was for our defense. Then monday's afternoon practice rolls around and I'm talking to Sean, our strong safety and starting QB, and he tells me.

"Hey. I'm glad you came out for football this year. All season long you've been holding onto these passes after getting blown up, and it pisses me the hell off everytime. And that last one in practice got me so hot. I wouldn't have hit that guy so hard if it hadn't been for you pissing me off all the time.."

Right then i knew that i had done something for my team that nobody else could say they had. And I was proud of it.

So, point of this long winded anecdote of mine, is that even though you may not see the field on gameday barring a complete blow-out, a reserve or practice squad player definitely contributes to his team's long-term success and he can take pride in that fact.

Hail!

I understand the business nature of it, but if I was Tiquan Underwood I would feel like I got a bit of a raw deal here. Even if he was likely to be inactive, you have to think the coaches figured there was a good chance they would rather have the extra DL for the game. I just think they should have given more of a warning or do this move earlier in the buildup to the Super Bowl, it's got to be crushing for the kid. Judging by his tweets, he handled it way better than I would have.

On an aside, it will suck if the Patriots win tomorrow. I can't stand Boston as a sports town and it will suck to see them pull ahead of the Redskins in Super Bowl rings. I will admit it would be worse for the Giants to win, but the one thing that would make the Patriots winning tomorrow slightly okay would be to see Andre Carter get a ring. That man was nothing but class for us and I'm glad to see him on a successful team, even though I don't care for that team.

Edit: I should add that the idea of OG Brian Waters getting a ring would be pretty cool too, even if he didn't get it with Kansas City.

eehhhhh, I guess. Since he's actually a player. But you know trainers, etc get rings too. "check out this ring I got for spotting Vince Wilfork in the weight room". You could argue that could be any trainer, just like you could argue that could have been any 6th string WR on the team.

Darn LL, you went to one tough HS. Full speed, full on hits in practice huh? You kids must of been fearsome come game time, lol.

Nice read man BTW, and I fully agree about the worth to every member of the squad over a season, and can understand and appreciate the reasoning for all of them to be rewarded in the team effort. I just personally wouldn't feel elated at receiving a medal/ ring if I wasn't playing a part in the one off final it was achieved in.

Hail.
