Reassessing Fred Davis

I thought Sleepy was having a very strong year for us at TE and was becoming a force before his stupid mistake cut short his season, but watching the playoffs you see the difference between a good tight end (Davis) and a force Gronk or V. Davis, etc. Now, part of it is qbing, but Davis was not able to make those huge plays that we're seeing routinely made in the playoffs.

It makes you question where he ranks. Seems like a good, but not great tight end... maybe, time is also dimming my memory, but we lacked big playmakers. The 49ers also lack big playmakers... except their tight end is making big play after big play.

Sleepy is definitely not in his league. I remember when we were thinking Sleepy was a pro-bowler. Well, he isn't, esp not this year.

Where do you think Davis ranks and how good do you really think he is. I do want him on the squad next year, but he is a scary player given if he messes up, he's gone for a year and we already know he's capable of messing up even when he knows people are watching him and paying attention.

He got a mulligan and still got caught... that's just

Sleepy is in the mode of Vernon... actually i don't think he's too far off from him. Any TE who was on pace for 1,000 rec yards with a lack of weapons that we had, shouldn't be scoffed at. Not only should we re-sign him, but he is a building block for the future of this offense...

There's no comparing one Davis to another. Vernon Davis is an athletic freak and the only guy who really compares to him in the league as far as size and speed go is Calvin Johnson.

Fred Davis is roughly as athletic as Gronkowski, Graham, and Gates (probably ever so slightly less so than all of them). He's a little shorter than each of those guys and he definitely doesn't have the mitts that Gronkowski does nor does he seem to possess the same level of basketball-type instincts that makes those three so great. Regardless, he was on pace for over 1000 yards before his suspension so there's really no point in lamenting over the fact that he's not quite as good as the best of the best because he's still damn good.

The best direct comparison to him out of the Super TEs that seem to be dominating the league right now may be Aaron Hernandez.

the issue is maturity. Fred Davis has not grown up yet. Anyone who wastes their time, money and lungs on drugs where substance abuse is strictly enforced is a moron. He put himself above the team when he made the decision to get high. He could cost himself a lot of money as well. In a profession where your body is a temple he made a stupid stupid decision.

All that said I think that if he refocused his energy on football, studying film, and working out he could be elite.

Provided he's finally 'grown up' and 'got it', and you have to feel that Shanahan will of ripped him a new one behind closed doors so the message finally sinks in; can we not just be happy with what we have in FreddyD instead of coveting the VERY top echelon?

And what we have is a young, athletic, big quick pass catching TE that's got the ability to be amongst the top company in this league. A serious weapon on ANYONE'S team. Given finally having a competent pro QB to get him the rock on a consistent basis; and Kyle opening up more of his scheme now we have a serious run threat to compliment; along with the aforementioned dressing down from Coach Mike to a guy that's one dope hit away from a 16 game suspension; and I fully expect FreddyD to be a major scoring/ big play threat going forward.

He may not be as rounded as Vernon Davis, who's just an absolute beast in most every facet; or the freak of nature that is Grankowski; but darn if he's not the best of the next group and a young man, foolishness aside; we're EXCEPTIONALLY lucky to have.

Hail.

Why do I see this on here every day? Fans pick a player that is actually a bright spot with upside on our team, and then they compare him to the absolute best player or a freak athlete at the same position as if our player is a disappointment.

What do Vernon Davis (now, anyways, under Harbaugh), Rob Gronkowski, Antonio Gates, Aaron Hernandez, Jimmy Graham have in common that Fred Davis doesn't (not talking about an aversion to smoke the cheeba, either)

Size combined with athleticism? Is F. Davis indeed smaller than the above list?

It's usually an indirect response to sentiments held by other fans who exaggerate the value of the player.

I'm hoping the answer to this is more creative than competent QBing.

Edit: Damn. :ols:

I don't get this at all, Fred has played behind Cooley for most of his career which has stunted his growth. Even this year with bad QB play and facing much tougher defenses Fred and Vernon's numbers were VERY close and Freddy D played in 4 less games.

Vernon has excelled as his QB has (postseason) and Fred will do the same...

I agree with the folks that say he's a very good TE, but maybe not elite. Add a better QB to the situation, and who knows, maybe he ups his game. Nonetheless, I think he's an overall asset to the team.

At this point I'm more curious if we keep Cooley and/or roll with Paulson as the #2.

Cooley I guess will be all down to his injury. I've no doubt Chris would restructure for a lesser deal just to stay here, but if his body is no longer gona' hold up .....

Paulson was a major let down for me last year. He regressed from a very promising rookie year. I lost count of the number of times he either got blown up on blocking assignments, or he gave up a boneheaded penalty. I can certainly see them either taking a late round flyer in a TE, or bringing an undrafted/ vet. FA into camp to give him serious competition.

Hail.
