RonArtest15
Maybe you guys know...I'm asking this on the heels of watching Vernon Davis get a 15 yarder after his TD for propping himself up next to the camera man. What gives?
Geoff_K
It was grandfathered in according to the analysts reporting on TV
Dro89
they said that it was "grandfathered" in.
Boston Skins
So is Lambeau Leap a generic term and all teams can techincally jump into the stands? I don't remember Jabar Gaffney getting flagged for it (trying to save your thread. Doesn't belong in the stadium)

Washington_Redskin
How come the "Fun Bunch" wasn't grandfathered in? That was the one that started it all (this celebration penalty nonsense)
grego
i think jumping on the camera stand is a no go, but jumping into the stands is ok. if they are saying only the packers can jump into the stands, grandfathered in or no, thats crap. skins_fan1982
Complete bull****. So Green Bay Packer players can jump into the stands, but no other NFL team can? How is that in any way fair? Screw GB and whatever traditions they might have...
Aluadan
Uh, players of many teams jump into the stands all the time, there's nothing wrong with that.
Califan007 The Constipated
Geez, you guys lol ... ANYONE can do the "lambeau leap". The Fun Bunch celebration was deemed excessive before the crack-down, so it couldn't be "grandfathered" in.

(point) you *I don't understand why Vernon Davis gets a 15 yard penalty for doing next to nothing, but yet jumping in the stands is OK.

Enter Apotheosis
*I don't understand why Vernon Davis gets a 15 yard penalty for doing next to nothing, but yet jumping in the stands is OK. Because it is explicitly allowed as an exception of sorts in the NFL rules. You seem to have missed this point yourself about a dozen times in this thread. skinzplay
The Lambeau Leap is not - and should not - be a penalty. The "grandfathered in" reference by Aikman and Buck isn't entirely the case. Jumping into the stands doesn't matter, and wouldn't be penalized, because it doesn't take place on the field.
RonArtest15
Question raised on the SC blog...what's the difference between what VD did and someone dunking on the goalposts?
Enter Apotheosis
Question raised on the SC blog...what's the difference between what VD did and someone dunking on the goalposts? Dunking on the goalposts is explicitly allowed, what VD did is not. If you're driving at the fact that the rules are completely and utterly arbitrary... well, no ****. The rules are made by a committee of guys who watched a bunch of celebrations and essentially decided to create rules to ban the ones they didn't personally like. It's bound to be completely arbitrary.
AzSkinsFan63
How come the "Fun Bunch" wasn't grandfathered in? That was the one that started it all (this celebration penalty nonsense) EXACTLY! Because the NFL sucks!

SC_RedskinsFan
So you can jump into the stands because that's not part of the field, and you can dunk on the goal posts just because you can. But you cannot jump on top of a camera stand? That's right its in the field of play lol No Fun League

But you cannot jump on top of a camera stand? Instead of embracing their teammates after a score, they learned to embrace...themselves.

pjfootballer
Also, isn't dunking on the "Goalpost" using it as a "prop?" You can't touch the pilons in the corners, you can't punch the pad on the goalpost, you can't go on the camera stand, but you can dunk it "over" the goalpost. My solution has always been this: Let the do "ANYTHING" they want to do, but have the umpire place the ball on the ground and the ref start the play clock. If you are too busy celebrating, and not lining up for the extra point, delay of game. Speed up the ball placement and you'll see alot less celebrating (time wise, drawn out) and alot more flags flying.
Califan007 The Constipated
I think VD's jumping on the camera stand added an element of taunting that jumping into the stands or dunking on the goal post does not. ---------- Post added January-23rd-2012 at 06:36 AM ---------- Also, isn't dunking on the "Goalpost" using it as a "prop?" You can't touch the pilons in the corners, you can't punch the pad on the goalpost, you can't go on the camera stand, but you can dunk it "over" the goalpost. In that case, spiking the ball is using the field as a "prop" lol...I think they look at dunking the ball on/over the goal post as a form of spiking the ball, which is of course allowed. Basically, I get the feeling that any form of celebration that is either taunting or overly self-aggrandizing will get the flag, because that's what the league is wanting to cut down on...
