Hitman21ST
@nflcolts: The Indianapolis Colts have released Jim Caldwell of his duties as head coach of the Indianapolis Colts. That's not too surprising. Caldwell wasn't a good coach. Manning was the coach of that team post-Dungy. Caldwell was just a figurehead. Any word as to who they're looking at? TheLongshot
I'm a little shocked it took this long. Given the circus that was the Colts this year, it was hard for me to believe that Caldwell would survive it.
Botched
If Manning is no longer playing for them, this will be the first season in over 10 years that the coach of the Indianapolis Colts will even be relevant.
Boss_Hogg
Was Caldwell actually a coach? He always struck me as some guy who walked around on the sideline with a headset on.

I call BS on this one. Dungy was a pretty damn good coach. I think he deserves the credit for Gruden's SB win at Tampa too.

They just took him out of his misery.
Hiro
The more I think about it, the more I think we've seen the last of Peyton as a Colt. Based on every move I've seen, I think Irsay is more likely to draft Luck, trade Peyton for whatever he can get, and get rid of any aging veteran who has an overpriced contract, and do it all with a respected retread who can develop Andrew Luck. Now that I think about it, I wouldn't be surprised if Philly OC Marty Mornhinwig were called in to interview and ultimately hired. He's a guy who's been discussed as a possible HC candidate for a few years, and has ties to the new Colts GM.

I know one thing, when they went to the SB about 2 years ago, he really looked like someone who was just happy to be there. I felt they could have done MUCH better than him as a HC. Which was probably part of the reason for the FO re-shuffle.
WhoRUSupposed2Be
Well, that was to be expected actually. I love the many faces to his mystique.

Dungy was a very good coach. But...Jim Caldwell took the Colts to the Superbowl after Dungy left, and he was nothing but an empty suit and a headset. The coach just does not matter when Manning is playing. I could coach a Peyton Manning team to 10-6.
thebluefood
Was Caldwell actually a coach? He always struck me as some guy who walked around on the sideline with a headset on. Pretty sure Manning made sure it wasn't connected to anything.
SkinsGuy
The headset was to wonder if he should challenge a play or not... That assumes that the headset was turned on.
LadySkinsFan
The Colts can't trade Manning until they pay him that huge bonus, which is before free agent trade start.

jflow78
Ah, yet another hole in the "tanked it" theory. We better start hiring our coaches a little faster (WR and LB) because there are a lot of teams that will be looking for them soon.
Rufus T Firefly
It's funny that a couple of hours ago I was reading about how all the buzz pointed toward Caldwell staying put.

Exactly, and it makes me think their many (stressful) options and creating too many opinions among tenured Colts staff.. made the boss man on top kick everyone out and bring in guys who will be on board with the final decision about Peyton/Luck, whatever that is. BlueinBuf
Here's the thought I just had on the Colts situation, almost made this it's own thread because I thought it was so unique. Draft Andrew Luck, Peyton Manning becomes head coach. I know it's pretty out there but how crazy awesome would it be.
HogNose
^^^^ Very True. The guy was like a robot. Many Faces of Jim Caldwell Very true. Like someone said earlier....Manning was basically the coach post- Dungy.

Bubble Screen
The writing was on the wall for Caldwell once Polian and son were canned. They have a new GM (or will, I'm not sure if he's been hired or not). Now they'll bring in a guy that more than likely has an offensive background, so that he can groom their next QB...Andrew Luck. They are definitely taking him. And with Peyton's bonus coming due sometime in March, they'll likely pass on giving him the 28 mil. Or they'll give him the 28 mil, then trade him (not sure how this contract stuff works). I don't see ANY chance that they keep Manning now. It's just too risky, all the way around. If they kept Manning, Luck likely wouldn't want to play there. Or vice-versa. Can't see a scenario where Manning stays and wants to tutor Luck for a few years. And I can't see a scenario where Luck would even WANT to sit for a couple of years. It would be much easier for Irsay and the Colts to just cut ties now. And it's not like he doesn't have good reasoning to. Manning has had 3 neck surgeries in a short period of time. It's just too risky to hope that he has no further setbacks. Plus, by trading him away, they don't have to pay the 28 mil. Plus they have another franchise QB, who will likely be the starter there for a decade and a half. And let's be real here, no new coach they hire is gonna choose to keep Manning. They're gonna want to start anew with their own QB (Luck).
beachboy757
Well, I know the fans of the Houston Texans have to be happy. This is a perfect time for them to take over that division. I think it's gonna take the Colts 2 or 3 years to recover from this time bomb that exploded a bit early.
