Picks wasted on QBs since the departure of Trent Green

Just some food for thought. I'm going by memory here, so feel free to correct me if a couple of the scrubs are in the wrong round. This includes both drafts and trades.

Brad Johnson -1st,2nd,3rd

Todd Husak - 6th

Sage Rosenfels - 4th

Pharoah Ramseys - 1st

Danny Waffle - 7th (as I recall it was a conditional pick we had to give because the scrub DT we gave the Texans got cut)

Gibran Hamdan - 7th

Brunell - 3rd

Jason Campbell - 1st,3rd,4th

Jordan Palmer - 6th

Colt Brennan - 7th

McNabb -2nd and 4th (edited - thx)

So... that's 3 #1s, 2 2nds, 3 3rds, 3 4ths, 2 6ths, and 2 or 3 7ths.

And for all that, we got 1 good year out of BJ, and one adequate year from Scott Brunell.

Seriously - every first round pick should be on a QB until we get Ryan/Rivers/Brees/Manning/Flacco/Stafford/Rothlisberger/etc etc. Can't win without a QB, period. With as much time we waste on bum free agents and busted draft picks, we may as well just do it year in year out until we find out who has "it" - none of the guys on that list ever had that "it" factor that you see with the top tier ready to go QB's, like the one's mentioned above.

If that's what it took, to trade up for Luck or RG3

I would do that, before trading for Flynn and doing the same ole' damn thing!

This is just a tad worse when you consider two guys we passed over so we could draft busts/marginal players.

In 2001, Drew Brees slid to the top of the 2nd round while we took Rod Gardner at 15 (we started Jeff George, Tony Banks, and Kent Graham the following year).

In 2005, we took Carlos Rogers at 9 while Aaron Rodgers slid all the way to 24th (right in front of our 25th, where we took Jason Campbell).

There's obviously some luck involved in drafting a true franchise qb (obviously, the whole league passed on brees in the 1st round), but my goodness, have we compounded our bad luck with just one awful decision after another.

Trading up for Luck or Griffin is my first choice, but I'm starting to worry more now that it won't be possible.

My biggest issue is that, what happens when we decide not to sign any FA QB, miss out on both the top 2 guys we want, and are stuck with leftovers in FA or picking Tannehill at #6? That sounds like a horrible situation to me.

I agree I want to find our guy in the draft, but I'm also old enough to remember our history of drafting QBs is ******* awful.

Our biggest success was Mark Rypien, and he was only healthy to start 2 full seasons. One he won a SB in, the other he had a 70 rating which was HORRID even then.

Our other huge successes have been Jason Campbell and Gus Frerotte.

Just because you're "wash rinse repeat" cycle only goes back 10 years doesn't mean that we haven't washed rinsed and repeated badly in the draft also.

*Awaits first poster to claim that we actually gave up two 1st rounders for Jason Campbell...

*Will then await first poster to change it to how we "essentially" gave up two 1st rounders for Jason Campbell...

I thought we gave up two 1st for Campbell....

Now your day is half complete

Damn, we gave up that much for Johnson?? Maybe its just me but i really liked him and was pretty upset when we let him go.

Damn that feels like forever ago

And that was before Snyder owned the team. Shocking huh?

Anyway, out of our last 20 years, other than Rypien, Johnson was my favorite, if only because he tossed a Lions DE by the face mask during a playoff game.

That was one of my favorite moments in football.

i don't have a problem with using a 6th rounder to take a flyer on a longshot QB. in fact, only a few of those picks are really questionable in the context in which they took place, without the benefit of retrospect.

but jeez, the accumulated futility is monstrous. i think most of us are fed up with all the hoping to get lucky, trying to coach someone up, and trying to get by with average that has passed for QB policy in the last 20 years. it's time to get our blue-chip franchise quarterback for the next ten years. it's finally worth the price and risk.

But then there's Tebow...

I don't recall Johnson costing that much but it's been so long that I can't dig up the details. Fans rip Johnson but Skins had their greatest offensive success (post Gibbs I) under him. Too bad Danny screwed that up.
