ES Coverage: Vikings at Redskins - 'Twas the game before Christmas

Lots of stuff going on today so lets get started. :)

First, on behalf of Murf & myself, allow me wish your all a very Merry Christmas Redskins fans from FedEx Field.

Next mention is for today's Half Time Ceremony where Coach Petttibon takes his rightful place in our Ring of Fame. Can't imagine his holiday getting much better then this honor. Congratulations to him.

Today, Richie Petitbon, a former safety, defensive coordinator and head coach for the Redskins, will be inducted as the 45th member of the team’s Ring of Fame. Recently, Pro Football Hall of Fame cornerback Darrell Green called Petitbon his “greatest coach ever.”

Next up is the 2-12 Vikings. This game looked SO much better when the schedule was announce as everyone wanted to see McNabb VS Shanny/Rex/Kyle. However, Shanny was right all along in dumping McSuck as one, the same issues popped up with the Vikings and two, he's not even on a roster now.

Instead, the Vikes are starting their first-round pick, Christian Ponder at QB. So far for this year he has completed 146-of-258 passes for 1,757 yards, 13 touchdowns and 12 interceptions with a QB rating of 72.3. He also has 24 rushing attempts for 199 yards (8.3 avg.).

Look for the Skins D to throw a new wrinkle or two in to confuse the rookie and force/create a turnover today.

The bigger issue is the Vikes still have RB Adrian Peterson, a Four time Pro Bowler. Though he's only missed three games this season, he has carried the ball 196 times for 932 yards (4.8 avg.) and 11 touchdowns. Also, he has caught 16 passes for 125 yards (11.4 avg.) and a touchdown.

The Skins defense is going to have their hands full stopping the run today. Ponder should be easy enough for them to confuse and keep off balance, but with Peterson, they're going to have not miss a tackle.

Three time Pro Bowl DE Jared Allen and LB Chad Greenway lead the defense for the Vikings. Allen is second in the NFL with 17.5 sacks. He also has 56 tackles (43 solo), four forced fumbles, three passes defensed and one safety.

Greenway leads the team in tackles with 128 (78 solo).

Safety Jamarca Sanford leads the team in interceptions with two.

For those of you hyperventilating over Draft position, keep in mind that this is only the sixth time the Skins have played on Christmas Eve. Previously, the team has played five games on Dec. 24th and have a 4-1 record in those games and have never lost in regulation on Dec 24th.

This will be the 16th regular season meeting (21 total) between the two teams. The Skins lead the regular season series at 8-7 and the overall series at 11-9.

Rex Grossman in four games against the Vikes is 63-of-121 (52.1 percent), 717 yards, 1 TD, with a 55.7 QB rating. Incase you were wondering.

Glad I picked up Royster in the middle of week for my fantasy team since I already had Helu.:)

During the game, I think instead of the play by play, because I don't think anyone really reads it, I'm going to switch it up & just tweet so be sure to follow. Or get left out.:)

A Few, Quick, Final Thoughts

Wow. Who woulda thought this game would have become a shoot out?

It's a bummer that they lost, but I'm sure those idiots cheering for them to loose for Draft position are crunching the numbers to maketheirselves happy.

Earlier on twitter, I said "I'm expecting Royster to make a statement today. Maybe enough to even jump Helu on the depth chart". I haven't seen his toal game numbers yet, but he had 9 for 48 with an average of 5.3 in the 1st half. He followed that up with another 48 yards in the 3rd quarter on 6 attempts with an average of 8 yards per carry. My only knock on his game was he didn't find the end zone. Though to be fair, it took Helu a game or two before he started scoring as well. Our future looks good with these two guys as our RBs. Shanny have them push each other next year. Admittedly, Royster was the guy I wanted to focus on today. Typically, I try to focus on the team as whole, but I wanted to change that up because of the Royster start once it was announced Helu was out.

I'll see ya next week in Philly as we see two teams with nothing to play for other then who hates the other more.

I actually read the play by play after each game. It's very well done.

Not that I will blame you for not doing it ;p

I was on my way to my aunts house and I heard on that radio that Helu was out. I panicked and put that bum Laruent Robinson in Helu's spot, but then I realized that all I had to do was pick up Royster.....

14.90 points later I am still happy. :D
