Official ES Corner/Safety Redskins v. Giants, discussion thread: Atogwe and Wilson show

This is the first time I have seen the Atogwe and Wilson combo making a difference in a game like this. Atogwe had an INT with great concentration and Wilson broke up a crucial Nix catch and then Giants ended up having a FG instead of another first down. Gomes has looked ok and Hall's name has not been called.

Have at it and be nice to each other, were all we got.

Doughty... OK, he's a backup, but he should not be getting dragged by Nicks like that.

Overall, hard to find any fault with the secondary today. wee caught a few breaks with drops... specifically Nicks in the first quarter...

But hey.. it's on them to make that play and they failed.

Manning has been mentioned among the greats this year,, honestly this week on the radio I heard them talking about guys on pace to equal Marino's numbers for a season, and Manning was a name they brought up.

We ate him up.

did I mention how much I like Josh Wilson?

this guy plays with TENACITY. His INTs in the end zone have been great, but his play on every other down has been superlative all season. On plays in which the ball might get byt him and hit the receiver, he slaps and claws at the ball so much he breaks up passes after the fact. You saw him do it again today on the sidelines in nice slow motion.

His stick at the goal line on Cruz(?) prevented a touchdown. We ended up taking over on downs. That was HUGE. MONSTROUS.

An EXCELLENT textbook pefect hit. The receiver did not move another inch.

A rhetorical question, but how many guys in the NFL give up on that play figuring it's a TD?

That was a GREAT play, and frankly, he should be a candidate for NFC Defensive Player of the Week.

He REALLY reminds me of Pat Fischer.

It isn't like we got a ton of holes to fill in other places. Give me a break. Landry and Atogwe healthy will be the best safety combo in the league. Bank on it.

LOL. Landry is a FA in need of surgery, has trouble staying healthy and hasn't lived up to his billing at all.

Atogwe is in his 30s and coming off two consecutive mediocre seasons.

Go ahead and "bank" on that being the best pair of Safeties in the NFL if you like.

True, I would give them both another year to get things together though, but no way am I anointing them as the best pair of Safeties.

Hall should have had a FF on Nicks, but I think the play was blown dead. He got the ball out before the knee was down.

*Not for nothing....Hall has been playing some really good football (couple hiccups here and there) since he said he should be cut.

I agree. I like Hall, and for all the faults people assign to him, the positives he brings are pretty impressive.

Disagree completely

I disagree with your belief they could be the best in the league. I do, however, agree that we should keep them in tact for next year. I would franchise tag Landry and the rest, I believe, are under contract. Atogwe and Gomes can compete for the starting spot and Doughty can continue backing both spots up and playing special teams.

Our secondary has been pretty solid - they have allowed ONE 300 yard passer all year - Tom Brady last week. One year of the tag is not overpaying to see if Landry can finally get healthy and return to last year's form. He even showed it during the first half of the first Dallas game this year, but was unable to perform at that level over time due to injury. I like Wilson's game a lot and he has started to hold onto the ball better lately. Hall is Hall - he's going to get beat at times but he makes some great plays for turnovers both in the form of interceptions and fumbles - I thought the refs got another fumble of his wrong today by saying the receiver was down.

I would be happy to see us spend a decent pick on a corner to push for playing time or perhaps supplant Barnes, but I think the secondary group as a whole is pretty damn good.

Barnes and Wilson, the UMD players, are doing well for the Skins. They are young, and both are playmakers.

The Safeties are a little suspect. With Landry out, and if needs surgery ... he may be limited in his range of motion. Need to draft a young, tall, physical safety who can play lights out! I would keep an eye on Kenny Tate, another UMD product.

It's nice to know that all we need to do on defense during the offseason is just a couple tweaks here and there. An offseason full of offensive focus is really gonna do this team some good.

You could say that again, oh wait you did. hahaha. I think the Skins do need a corner and could use a safety upgrade. But certainly if healthy all the way they have some players. Injuries and circumstance has prevented the starters from ever getting on the field enough to develop a chemistry.

I certainly wouldn't mind spending a mid-round pick in next years draft on a corner (3rd or 4th). By the way, I saw Doughty out there a lot today. I forgot to keep an eye out for Gomes' performance. Anyone have any observations on him? I think with some seasoning that guy could be an option at safety. He and the other rookies have performed phenomenally this year. Of course, all draft classes need a few years of play to truly be judged by, but what a great set of rookies we've seen this year. Especially with essentially no offseason. I couldn't be prouder of the front office right now.
