Get one of the Kinect bundles. I would go with the 250GB holiday bundle $400. It has two games with it, plus the additional harddrive space. If you just need the harddrive for saving games then the 4GB $300 one will do.

One thing about getting the 4GB one is you can get a hard drive, but you will save money in the end if you purchase the bundle.

haha. That means probably not.

The doesn't mean the kid isn't a rebel however.

Supposedly a new XBox is coming out for next Xmas.

I would just buy one from a pawn shop and keep it moving until next year.

Or a new one without all the other stuff. Well you will probably need an extra controller.

Alright ... basic elements:

  • Xbox360 is the console
  • There are options to have bigger hard drives if you want to download content. We have a 120 GB drive (we upgraded from 20 GB) and it has served us well, but if you are using the Xbox as a media server, you might want to go bigger. The benefit of a larger drive is that many games have free playable demos. These typically run up to a GB each, and so with the smallest drive you won't get more than three or four without having to delete. Some other games have downloadable content. On second thoughts, 4GB seems way too small. 20GB might be usable, but not 4GB if you are online.
  • Kinect is the motion sensor that allows certain games that track body movement to be played. Very possibly a hot item for the younger crowd, girls and adults, but of no interest to my teenage son. :)
  • Xbox Live is the ability to play many games online collaboratively. If he has friends with an xbox360 on Live this will be very popular. If playing online a headset is essential too. If he's interested in the xbox versus PS3 or Wii, it may be because of Live.

If buddies (or Dad) will be playing (and you will), make sure you have at least two controllers. :)

20 GB is fine unless you're going to be downloading tons of movies and what not.

Live is either useless or a must have depending on the type of games your son would play. It's $50 a year I believe(might be 60 now)so take that into account as well. Probably not worth getting for a 10 year old.

i havent needed a large harddrive, but i dont download movies or games onto my computer. in fact, i have one of the first xbox360 models. i have attached a thumb drive though for an extra 4 gigs of memory space. it works for me, but if you are going to download things (chances are that you will), youll need more than 4 gb of space.

as a family, yall might like the kinect. i would recommend getting that if you can.

Do not get the 4gb. You will run out of room to save anything in a heartbeat. $199 is a really good deal but i will be buying storage devices all the time.

And IMO the Kinect is a waste of money (unless you can get it in some type of package deal) i just wouldn't spend the extra money on it. Id be willing to bet pretty soon you will be able to get them on Amazon pretty cheap. Some of the games are ok for it but for the most part just about everyone i know who has it doesn't use it. If you want to buy brand new go with the 250gb (pretty sure thats the only size you can buy right now). I you want to buy used (gamestop) u can get it there for a pretty good deal you just have to make sure to buy a hard drive with it.

And if your son would like to play games online (Call of Duty and games like this) xbox live i believe is like $40 for the year.

I disagree with the Kinect assessment. EASports has already announced that next years Tiger woods and madden will be kinect enabled. The games are not that great right now but they are getting better each month.

I guess it all depends on what u think is fun. Im not a big fan of either of those games and having to stand up and doing the whole motion doesn't sound very fun to me. But for some people that might sound awesome. All depends on what u like i guess.

Just think pretty soon Kinects will be very cheap especially seeing how a lot of people are saying the 720 will be out next year. Maybe the 720's will have built in kinects so the kinect prices will drop idk. Just a guess.

Other analysts think that it is going to be 2014 before we have the 720. Either way, the Kinect can easily be brought over and be supported as a peripheral. MS would not have wasted the money to develop the technology if they were going to only use it for 1 year.
