GSF
http://money.cnn.com/2011/11/16/news/economy/tax_millionaires/index.htm WASHINGTON (CNNMoney) -- A group of two dozen millionaires stormed Capitol Hill on Wednesday, demanding lawmakers raise their taxes. "We want to pay more taxes," said California millionaire Doug Edwards, a former marketing director for Google (GOOG, Fortune 500). "If you're fortunate, and you make more than a million dollars a year, you ought to pay more taxes." The millionaires want Congress to allow the tax cuts passed during the George W. Bush administration to expire. Some want higher taxes generally... ... California venture capitalist Garrett Gruener, founder of Ask.com, told left-leaning House members on the Progressive Caucus said he doesn't buy the argument that hiking the tax rates for the wealthy and forcing them to pay more in taxes would stymie business growth. "Not once have any of my personal investment decisions been a function of marginal tax rates," Gruener said. "We just don't think about it." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Wait a minute...these rich people seem to agree with Obama! greenspandan
it's sad and pathetic that discourse has fallen so far that one of the major parties can get away with referring to the rih euphemistically as "job creators" and try to draw such absurd connections between their tax rates and the unemployment rate. ---------- Post added November-17th-2011 at 04:58 PM ---------- Why dont they just send the extra money since they are so altruistic in their high moral ground? i wasn't aware the IRS took donations. Corcaigh
Why dont they just send the extra money since they are so altruistic in their high moral ground? Possibly because they believe all the rich should contribute to reducing the debt, and because they understand that greater income equality is good for a healthy society. SnyderShrugged
Possibly because they believe all the rich should contribute to reducing the debt, and because they understand that greater income equality is good for a healthy society. So they should act on their beliefs for themselves as individuals and show a shining example for others to follow. Why should others be forced to share these individuals beliefs? da#1skinsfan
SS' point, and its a good one, is that these blowhards are more interested in the CNN report and martyrdom than doing the right thing itself. Pick6
a taxpayer can send the irs whatever they desire extra at any time. Nothing stops them from doing so But I don't think the government can spend that money. They would hold it as a credit for your future taxes. When you pay your taxes there is always the option of pay more or holding your refund for the next year. I think the point, that some are missing, is they believe that the Bush cuts should expire and as millionaires themselves they know that some of the excuses that other wealthy people are making is bull****. With the hole we are in and the insane debt, I'm sure the money can and will be used. And if not on a federal level, they can always donate it to fund all kinds of state and local projects that normally would have to use taxes. I support them in paying as much as they desire. Just dont force that altruism on others.
Corcaigh
Why should others be forced to share these individuals beliefs? Because the wealthy have paid their politicians to rig the system in their favor. Why shouldn't some of the wealthy lobby for tax reform? The issue is not whether we need to pay taxes. The issue is what is the right amount, and what the right level of Federal expenditure is.

They specifically are asking for theirs, and all others in their brackets, taxes be increased because they claim they want to pay more. I'm just pointing out that nothing prevents them from paying more so they should do so and be happy about it. What they dont get to do is mandate their opinion upon everyone else who isnt in agreement with them. ---------- Post added November-17th-2011 at 12:18 PM ---------- Props to them for stepping up and being willing to pay more money They say it, but I bet they dont just go ahead and do it though. PeterMP
because it only makes sense that if one should desire to pay more taxes, they should go ahead and do so without impacting anyone else. Rational thought. You are assuming they don't. Maybe the also feel that ALL of the rich should pay more taxes. That it should be a TAX increase and not a donation. Is there any reason why they can't or shouldn't express that view?
Tulane Skins Fan
a taxpayer can send the irs whatever they desire extra at any time. Nothing stops them from doing so Because it doesn't help if only a few of them do it. The difference maker would be if all people making more than 1M bucks actually had to pay higher taxes. GSF
SS, you seem to missing on several points here: 1. You can't pay extra taxes, the money is just held in the form of credit against future taxes. That money won't be used as you suggest. 2. This group is saying to end the bush tax cuts for those making at least 1 million per year. This is not altruism, this is just returning to the tax levels pre the Bush cuts. They believe it will help the economy. 3. Members of this group are disputing the claims of so many conservatives that ending the bush tax cuts for the wealthy will cause them to invest less in business ventures. Henry
SS' point, and its a good one, is that these blowhards are more interested in the CNN report and martyrdom than doing the right thing itself.Agreed. Go donate then, dick. Adopt a highway. Build a school. Send a kid to college. Build a homeless shelter. Go ahead guys, we're all watching. It's a lousy point unless you know for a fact that the people aren't already doing that. Do you know? ARE you watching? Here, this took me two minutes: The article mentions one of the millionaires is Farhad Ebrahimi, who is described as 'a philanthropist.' Google search turned up this: http://boldergiving.org/stories.php?story=Farhad_Ebrahimi Over the last three and a half years, roughly $10 million of the assets under my direct control have been contributed to the Chorus, and $1.2 million in grants have been made. What remains of my personal assets are in the pipeline to be contributed within the next 15 years, leaving enough to cover my projected cost of living plus a little extra to enable me to pursue whatever comparatively modest projects I may come up with. All future assets earned, inherited, or distributed from my family's investment portfolio will be contributed as well. The only things holding me back from contributing everything right now are: (1) the desire to grow the Chorus organically, so that we're always up to the challenge of giving in a thoughtful manner and (2) I don't want to prematurely close the door on other avenues for giving, such as setting up more than one foundation, setting up a 501©(4), or contributing in a major way to someone else's foundation. It is unfortunate that the attacks dogs come out whenever this topic comes up. The 'why don't you donate more' auto-response it tired, knee-jerk rhetoric. Next let's just call them all socialists, have a warm glass of milk and take a nice nap.
