ChampSkinsFan
Quentin Mccord had 0 catches. Why hasn't anybody gave Fred Smoot any credit. He was a shutdown corner last week to. :gaintsuck :gaintsuck :gaintsuck :gaintsuck

@DCGoldPants
People made a big deal when he gave up that pass to Conway in the opener. He's not Champ...he's being tested more. I think he's doing an excellent job along with all the DB's. Baumen needs some work though.
Art
Actually, he's not being tested more. In the first game he had three passes thrown his way in what appeared to be man coverage. Champ had two. In this last game, Smoot had ONE pass thrown his way all day. Champ had four or five. Teams aren't really testing EITHER of our corners to this point. But, so far more passes have gone to Champ's man than Smoot's. Of course, McCord is a total dog who couldn't get open so the Falcons would have been foolish to try Smoot. Art
Also, a quick recollection of our first two games reveals that in man coverage our top two corners have only surrendered five completions against them in what appeared to be man coverage. Two by Smoot against the Jets and three by Bailey, one against the Falcons and two against the Jets. The coverage changes games when it's that good. This week will be a legitimate test though as the Giants have weapons to challenge our corners with.
@DCGoldPants
I just hope Bowen gets to lay that hit on Shockey that he deserves....Roy Williams was my choice for that one but Shockey's stinky performance didn't really open that up. Joe7
Art, I have to disagree with you in saying that Smoot has not been tested just because they haven't thrown his way. Don't get me wrong, Smoot is my LEAST favorite Redskin (he reminds me of Deion in his last year as a Redskin, all talk and NO backing it up on the field), but if they aren't throwing his way it could have something to do with the fact that the receiver he is covering is not open, which means he is doing his job. Only 1 pass thrown his way last week tells me he was blanketing his man all day. In fact, even though Smoot did have another missed opportunity to tackle Duckett on his longer TD run, it was his best game I have seen in awhile. But I do agree that this Sunday will be a much better clue as to whether he has truly improved from last year. And yes, please, somebody, hit the mouth right off of Shockey! Art
Joe, I know that not throwing the way of a corner in man coverage usually means he's got good coverage. That's kind of the point. I don't think most people realize just how infrequently Smoot is thrown at because of just how frequently he is in great coverage. Even the one pass he was in on, it was double coverage and I can't believe he had man responsibilities on a running back down the field, but, who knows . A healthy Smoot has rarely been burned in man coverage. He was burned badly by Bryant in the closing game last year, but that wasn't so much being beaten by Bryant as being just a hair off of making a play on several passes in which he was positioned well to make plays. That may be attributed to immaturity, inexperience or the injury that limited him somewhat to close the year last year. I love Smoot. I think Bailey is continuing to improve as well. But, seriously, it may be that we have two of the top five cover corners in the league right now. We just don't always recognize it because we are still left with the sour taste of Smoot's mental mistakes to start last year and his poor play through injury to end last year. When he's healthy, he's a tough guy to make much of a play on.
Leonard Washington
i wish you guys would leave smoot alone. if he was as bad as you guys claim, he wouldn't even be on the team.
fansince62
I fully expect to see Smoot pulled out of the game when the opposing offense is in the red zone later in the year. He's not built for run support and he has demonstarted a tendancy to allow too much space down by the goal line. It's real hard to read what the pass defense has done. The first game had us up against a QB who basically hasn't played in over a year. The second game found us in a similar situation. We'll learn this week how good they are at working the 2nd and 3rd receivers if we continue to have a weak pass rush. I expect Edwards to experiment, if that is the right word, with more stunts and blitzes. Our safeties better be up to the challenge.

poidog22
With all of this talking about Smoot's ability, which I think is pretty under-rated due to the fact that he's playing opposite one of the top 3 corner's in the league, this scenario has to come into play: If Champ doesn't re-sign, I fully expect Snyder to slap the fanchise tag on him, thus receiving 2 #1 picks in exchange, (at best), and probably using one of those #1's on a top college CB, but of course, whomever they get will have the normal college-to-NFL transition period, and may not start immediately. So if it does play out like this, it begs the question: If we don't re-sign Champ, are we comfortable with Smoot stepping into Champ's spot to shutdown the opponent's #1 WR, and Bauman playing against the #2 guy, or do we look to the free agency market for a capable starting CB? That is all. :gaintsuck :dallasuck :eaglesuck
NoCalMike
Either way there is a lot of quality corners that are going into FA next year. Charles Woodson is one of them. One of the CBs from Miami is another one.....there are more. That might hurt Bailey's chances of hitting FA. Since he is going to get tagged, it would be crazy to give up two first round choices for him when Woodson is in FA. I think Champ is the best right now, but why give up two #1's for the best, when you could just sign the second best?
Ignatius J.
If smoot is our number one corner we will be fine IF we get some seious help on the d-line. Smoot would be a perfectly good #1 corner for a team with some serious pass rush. Many teams make do with worse. -DB
NavyDave
I like Smoot who may be alot easier to sign than Champ. My concern is of the 3rd and 4th corners. Bauman is in the system for a second year and is apparently a litlle banged up and Jimoh wasnt told to play off during that deep pass for the TD sunday but he should get better. TheKurp
As Al alluded to, Smoot's weakness is against the run; whether it be a rushing attempt or a run after a catch. The man just doesn't have the size to consistently make solo tackles, and when he does tackle he tackles scared (like he's afraid of contact). This is Smoot's 3rd year in the NFL and I've yet to see the man gain any appreciable size. I think he's a little less than dedicated when it comes to hitting the weights. All of that aside, he is a formidable cover guy.
