darrelgreenie
It's never been more popular. I think this is what audiences want.Yeah, I guess you're right' many fans like all the passing.I'm partial to the running game. My favorite player is Adrian Peterson. I actually liked watching the Chief's offense and enjoy smash mouth football. I like seeing WRs get layed the eff out. I understand player safety but they gotta give the defense something. I think they should at least allow DBs/LBs more freedom to press jam and hand fight with the WRs/TEs.
CrypticVillain
Well' date=' being in a conference with Rodgers and Brees does not favor them under the new rules. It simply makes Grossman viable.[/quote']I wasn't talking about now, I was talking about in general. However, the last two times we played those QB's we played them pretty good. :2cents:

tshile
i agree that the league favors the pass too much. i also think gooddel has overstepped his authority, and changed the game way to much; in a way i don't like. he needs to be fired, and it needs to be today. that being said, i think the high passing numbers are more a sign of defenses not in shape (look at the number of no huddles/hurried offenses, and how it correlates to the passing numbers) and not being prepared or as aggressive as they will be in 4-6 weeks. Truant
Defense is harder than offense. On offense you know what play you are going to execute. Depending on down, distance, score, etc you can come up with a play and some QBs have the ability to make adjustments at the line. On defense it's about reaction and communication. I think the lockout put defenses in a bit of a hole and there were massive amounts of blown coverages throughout the league. It'll get cleaned up. This is more of a passing league, but week 1 will not be the norm going forward.
Califan007 The Constipated
Interesting. In your world, there is no learning curve, NFL Teams take advantage of rule changes within a week. Ah, so going from 4, to 6, to 3...and then to 14...is simply a matter of a "learning curve", and not a sign of an exception. Why am I not surprised. Mr. Sinister
Running the ball slows the pass rush and minimizes the opposing teams total offensive plays. It's not so much a weapon as it is a form of defense. Pretty much. Just a tactic that is employed to keep defenses at bay, and from teeing off on the QB. It's amazing that this is what it's apparently come to. Teams that can run, but can't pass, have no chance in hell.

PokerPacker
One thing that certainly stuck out to me while watching games this weekend was the absolute refusal to call holding penalties. Give any QB enough time, and he will burn you. yeah, there did seem to be quite a few arms around the necks of the pass rushers.
Lombardi's_kid_brother
I was thinking about this in the car today, coincidence that there's a thread about it. Rich Gannon was talking about all the records for week 1 and it really pointed out that the NFL has gone arena. And that's sad.I'm still clinging to the hope that this is an anomoly. Bump this thread after week 8 ---------- Post added September-13th-2011 at 03:36 PM ---------- Interesting. In your world, there is no learning curve, NFL Teams take advantage of rule changes within a week. I plan on following this somewhat regularly and hopefully things will move back to "normal" at some point. But, seriously, Chad Henne put up 400 yards against a team with Super Bowl aspirations. That made me take a step back. As for "what happened," I think two things may have finally triggered the end of days. 1. Roger fined the **** of James Harrison last year. I don't want to do the research, but just looking at last year, the numbers started going up towards the tail end of the season. Defenders are afraid of making bit hits and receivers have learned that they are afraid. The biggest hit I saw this week was Plaxico Burress laying out that Cowboys' D-back. 2. In the CBA, they drastically cut down the amount of live practice time. Offseason workouts will be limited to nine weeks, with two weeks of strength and conditioning, three weeks of instruction with no offense-versus-defense drills and four weeks of organized team activities -- a maximum of three in the first two weeks and maximum of four in the last two weeks. In the preseason, veterans can report no earlier than 15 days before their team's first game. A first day is limited to physicals and meetings, and no pads or contact are allowed in the second and third day of camp. As has been outlined elsewhere, there will be only one padded practice per day. Including walkthroughs, players cannot be on the field more than four hours per day. During the regular season, there can be just 14 padded practices for the entirety of the season, 11 of those sessions must be held in the first 11 weeks, and teams can hold no more than two padded practices per week. One padded practice per week is allowed during the playoffs, and all padded practices are limited to three hours max. Also, a bye week must include at least four consecutive days off, including Saturday. Offensives are ridiculously complex now and the rules favor them. And defenses had 14 days to really prepare themselves. It's not going to get any better.

Read the practice rules I posted. There's no real chance to get in better shape or be better prepared. Also, I noticed more conditioning problems on offense this week than defense. Dez Bryant looked like a dead man in the 4th Quarter against the Jets. Brandon Marshall was dead on his feet against the Dolphins. I assume their stamina will improve. So he's had success throwing on good teams before. Granted, 416 yards is a lot MORE "success" lol...but his yards per attempt against the Pats Monday night barely budged from those two games I mentioned last year, indicating that it was the number of pass attempts that raised his yardage total and not anything having to do with rules changes. Last night: 49 attempts, 8.5 ypa (Pats) Last year: 44 attempts, 8.3 ypa (Jets), 38 attempts, 8.0 ypa (Pats) As for "what happened," I think two things may have finally triggered the end of days.1. TD Riggo
I like it when WE get 300+ yards passing (but I would also like a matching 300 yards rushing too :pfft: ) but I agree that the pansy rules are ruining the game! Heck, I wish that the Deacon Jones head slap and the clothesline tackle was never outlawed. That was back when men were men!
Est.1974
3. The lockout might have had an affect on the effectiveness of defenses early in the season. Agreed. You can see that in the rushing leaders stats as well ie, an evident increase in 2011 from 2010.

These guys are professional athletes - put the conditioning work in during the lockout and camp. I know there is no substitute for playing at game speed and conditions but even so - unacceptable in my book.
greenspandan
yeah on sunday i had no idea such a field day was going on around the league, but even without that knowledge, i remember thinking to myself that, even though i am the most ardent fan of the 80s-gibbs-style smashmouth domination through clock control and methodical drives, etc, running the ball in today's NFL just seems like a WASTE of time and opportunity, and seems to increase the chances of a drive stalling out. i am convinced that an occasional run to keep the defense honest is all that is strategically advantageous. attempting to rely on the run game, even just to set up the pass, is a waste of downs. rules so favor the passing game that it no longer needs any setting up. might as well start a backup o-lineman at RB -- give our QB an extra blocker. HailToTheRedskins14
Eh, this stuff comes and goes. The pendulum swings. That's why Brady's godlike performance only put him 5th behind guys from the 50's and 60's. Nothing in football is new, its all been done. Teams will get super-slim and fast to combat the incredible passing attacks, and BAM a new team starts building a bunch of maulers on the offensive line and dominates the league with power ball. This surely isn't the end of the NFL, just a new fad.
kleese
There is a flip side to this.....things tend to even out and defense starts to take over more as the season wears on..... Last year, there were 11 post-season games played...there is an opportunity there for 22 300+ passing yard games. How many were there? 2 Drew Bress in wild card loss in Seattle went over 400 and Rodgers threw for 304 in the Super Bowl. That's it...zero 300 yard games in the divisional round, the championship games, and the other three wild card games...and we're talking names like Vick, Manning, Brady, etc. And several winning QB's threw for under 200. No dount the landscape has changed, but I wouldn't call it Arena Ball quite yet.

kleese
And by the way... Tom Brady can go screw himself... Just when I'd almost forgotten about the Boomer Esiason game in 1996, Brady has to go and throw for 500 yards, which naturally brings up the list again...
