Virginia Tech officials issued an alert this morning about a gunman being spotted at the school's Blacksburg campus.

The alert, issued at 9:37 a.m., said a person with a gun had been spotted near Dietrick Hall.

People on campus were told to stay inside and secure doors, and they were advised that security personnel were responding.

Dietrick is a three-story, 93,000-square-foot dining center on campus that also houses a convenience store, laundry area and central bake shop.

NBC affiliate WSLS confirmed that the campus siren system had been activated and all people on campus had been asked to remain indoors.

Virginia Tech, site of a 2007 mass shooting, issued a campus lockdown Thursday after a man with a gun was reportedly spotted on campus

The university issued an alert on its website at 9:37 a.m. Thursday telling students and employees to stay inside and secure doors.

A subsequent crime alert said three children attending a camp on campus reported seeing a white man who appeared to have a gun covered with a cloth.

"Officers responded immediately to the area but found no one matching the description," the crime alert said.

"We have been told to stay put until we get more information,'' Virginia Tech communications officer Lynn Davis told CNN.

No, this is not a bump of the old thread. Cross your fingers this is a false alarm.

Posted this in another thread about John Beck, but did any one see this from the USA Today article about it?

Update at 10:35 a.m. ET: John Beck, a student who is not on campus for the summer but receives official communciations from the school, says he got the first text warning at 9:41 a.m. ET.

Obviously different John Beck, but thought it was an odd coincidence.

Praying for their safety though, Va Tech definitely doesn't need any more tragedies.
