Concern about John Beck's arm? Washington Post

Dan Steinberg has come to a conclusion about Beck's arm based on some confliciting* tweets from people no more qualified then me or you from the 1st day of practice where 2 QBs are throwing the workload of 4 QBs?

Okay-

*If Beck lacks arm strength why is he overthrowing WRs?

That lousy Beck he doesn't having his timing down on deep balls on the 1st day of training camp!

Run for the hills!

I should have my head examined for posting in this thread.

But, just for the sake of balance:

Beck has taken the bulk of the first and second-team snaps in training camp because he is the only veteran able to practice.
“Even though John’s gotten a lot of reps, his arm is a little sore today. I could see it,” Shanahan said. “He didn’t quite have the zip on it that he normally has. So therefore, you don’t want to set him back at all, so you have to be very careful.”

“I think first of all John throws the ball very well,” Theismann told Dave Ross. “He has a quick release. Gets the ball down the field. Doesn’t have an overpowering arm, but good enough to get it as far as you’re gonna need it to be able to play at this level. The whole thing with John’s just gonna be experience. How experienced is he gonna be as time goes on?...But I like what John’s done. Mike Shanahan sure likes him.”

6. Beck had a better day throwing the ball in the full-team work. But his deep ball still wobbles and at times during the seven-on-seven (or eight-on-eight) he doesn’t always lead his receivers, preventing them from runs after the catch. He also didn’t do a great job on bootlegs to his left, skipping passes in front of receivers on at least two occasions. But he made some nice throws – he dropped one in over the head of safety O.J. Atogwe (playing up by the hash on the left) and just in front of DeAngelo Hall for a completion to Jabar Gaffney. Sweet throw. He also hit Robinson in stride on an out route; Robinson turned corner Dante Barnes inside-out.

7. Still, curious to see how Beck’s inconsistency in leading receivers plays out during the preseason. When people talk about accuracy in the NFL, it’s more about placing it on the correct shoulder than completion percentage. Need to give guys a chance to run after the catch. Maybe it’s a rust thing; Beck did improve on the deep ball since camp opened. And I remember in the minicamps how bad he looked initially, only to get better.

Regretably, when it comes to training camp QB performance , what's past may in fact be be prologue.

The last young Skins QB I saw in training camp with this problem was Heath Schuler. In camp, even in passing drills without defenders, his accuracy was at about 50% - - even on mid range outs. I thought " well, it's only training camp, Turner (Norv) must know what he's doing." Unfortunately, his performance in camp translated to his on field performance in the regular season. In his rookie year, his completion rate as a starter was about 45%, w an interception rate of 4.5% and an overall rating of 59%. Fingers crossed for Beck. But remember, hope is a poor strategy in football.

9. Tight end Fred Davis comparing Rex Grossman vs. Beck: “Rex is more comfortable now. He’s been in the offense for so long, you can tell in his poise in the pocket. But Beck does well. He has a strong arm so he can make plays too. Hard decision.”

I've been keeping track of the players that comment on Beck, but especially about arm strength since the media reports seem to contradict the player comments.(not to mention the radar gun)

I think the QB who has not played in four years is going to be awesome.

LOL of course that is your opinion and its funny. But lets be real. Beck has been throwing the football for 4 years, he has preseason games behind him, and camps behind him, and film study as well. He has not been working the drive through at Burger World and suddenly got a call from Shanahan asking him to give up some burgers and fries to come in and play pitch and catch.

He has been very professional so far, and it is possible that Rex may end up with the starting job, but to be fair, Beck is going to be given a shot and there is no reason for all this hate and disdain for Beck which he is receiving from fans and the media. The guy has done nothing wrong except apply for a job and ask for a chance to show he can do it.

Agree 100 percent. I am pulling for both QBs. Would love for Rex to overcome his reputation and for Beck to turn out to be the guy the Shanahans think/hope he is.

JB finally gets his chance Friday night. Hey, if nothing else, this QB competition has added some intrigue to preseason football.

If you have watched Grossman closely you know that his arm strength is only average(for NFL qbs) , even though he is known for his deep passes (60 yds in air tops out). It was widely reported in chicago by coaching staff that Orton had a stronger arm than grossman, but he just didnt have the touch on the deep balls(at the time, he has gotten better with better recievers) . I think good mid-deep throwing is less about pure strength and more about release angles and feel/timing. I wouldn't read to much into this. I expect Beck to play well.

Anthony Armstrong in an interview today:

*Question inaudible.. "Yeah they do, uh...one guy...Beck has a little...will throw a little sharper ball, a little stronger ball. Rex is more about timing and accuracy and what not but they're both effective".

That might be on short throws, though, when you generally prefer touch and timing over the ability to break a receiver's fingers. Ironically, even though he's known for going deep, Rex seems to be very good in the short game.

"If you look at his career, he really hasn't had an opportunity to show that he can or cannot do it. But everything we see in practice, everything I've seen with him, it's the exact same that he showed in college. He's a very good thrower. He can get rid of it quick -- very similar to Marc Bulger in his throwing motion, how he can just get rid of it at any time. He's got a lot of zip on his ball. He does have a strong arm. And when it comes to his mobility, he'll surprise people. He can move around in the pocket, he can outflank the defense, and he can move the chains with his feet, too."
