DGREENHULK
DGrennie thats funny .....I couldn't get that link to open on Becks 61 mph article. Have any idea how far away he was throwing? I don't care if he can throw a football through a brick wall at 10 yards can he stretch and push the ball downfield?....obviously not from the highlights I've seen. He is Chad Pennington v2.0. And what do you expect his teammates to say he has a noddle arm? Call me skeptical but until I see him throw one deep and has Santana/ any Wr run through the ball without slowing down to fair catch it ill continue to believe he is a lame duck QB no pun intended. Stadium-Armory
I'd take a healthy Chad Pennington as our starter any day.

RabidFan
Lavar, who i abhor, actually had the best statement of his radio career today to a caller bashing Beck from seeing Saturday's practice. He said that Beck is new with the WRs(being most of them are new) and there are many intangibles he has to learn about them(how they run routes, how the WCO is all about timing, knowing their tendencies) and it takes time to get on the same page with them. Kudos to Lavar as Dukes was running with all fan donkies and their first impressions the first 4 days of camp and being a Chicken Little.
OuterBanksTarHeel
Two quick points-- 1) Does anyone honestly believe that Beck is capable of beating out Grossman in camp? 2) Does anyone honestly believe that MS, despite his talk in the media, is going to allow Beck to start over Grossman if/when Grossman outplays him in the pre-season, which is almost a certainty at this point? mojo
Well, let's let it play it out. Both players are erratic...let's see who makes less mistakes...I think that will determine who starts on 911...
monkeezgob
For all his reputation for wild, erratic play and his tendency to hit the self destruct button at crucial moments in a game you'd have to think that presuming he signs, then Grossman will be the starter for the opener. Unless Beck's pro career up to now has simply been a cunning plan to lure the league into a false sense of security about his ability and he is, in fact the reincarnation of Slingin' Sammy... boston skins fan
Seriosly it was the 2nd day of practice playin with the 1st string. Give the guy time to develop timing and chemistry with his receivers. its like goin from intern to ceo in a year you need time to learn the intricacies. Im not saying hes the next tom brady but let the guy play a ****ing game and get some time with his weapons before we pass judjement. All the reports out of collage with this kid is that he had the goods. But since hes been in the league no one gave him the opportunity to shine. Shanny will so lets see what happens. BTW we aint goin to the superbowl this year so why not.

I agree..let's face it..this year is all about rebuilding the roster top to bottom...getting rid of the dead wood and and letting Shanny bring in young players he believes are talented. We could have taken the QB at the 10 spot in the draft and let him play with an aging, declining team. Or, we trade down, build the roster and give Beck or Grossman a shot. I prefer the latter. Look at the Jets..they brought Sanchez in with a quality team and things are progressing. If Beck/Grossman can't do the job, we enter into a draft filled with talented QB's and whoever we pick will come into a situation infinitely better than Gabbert would have come into this year. lookoutblock
I saw a lot of John Beck around here when he was at BYU. No, he doesn't have a howitzer, but the guy flat out moves the chains and commands the huddle.

No, he doesn't have a howitzer, but the guy flat out moves the chains and commands the huddle. This is what the reports were out of him. You dont need a big arm to succeed in this league. If he can hit the short to mid throws and get them chains moving ill be happy. Plus from all accounts hes a natural leader and that is a BIG part of being a QB in this league. Im just sayin give the guy a break, and if he sucks we draft QB next year. If hes great we still draft a qb and now have a stop gap until the youngin is ready. Truant
As much as im hoping Beck performs at a high level, i still want a young QB drafted in the first round of next years draft. You'll be happy then. The year before Shanahan drafted Culter Jake Plummer had one of the best seasons of his career. 3400 yards, 18 TDs, 7 ints, 90+ QB rating. Beck and/or Grossman could light it up, but if Shanahan likes a QB next year (I think he does) he's going to draft that guy even if the incumbent is playing well. Arm chair QBs ***** and moan about arm strength. When you're evaluating a kid out of college, sure, they are under a higher level of scrutiny. But Beck won't succeed or fail because of his arm strength. His ability to maintain his poise, be accurate, and command the huddle are far more important factors. The faster the ball is traveling with it leaves the QB's hands, the farther it will go. ---------- Post added August-1st-2011 at 11:48 PM ---------- And for the record, Todd Collins was supposed to lack "arm strength"...Patrick Ramsey was supposed to have excellent arm strength. But as Collins showed us, being more decisive, understand the offense better, reading defenses better and having good pocket presence can overcome a lot. s0crates
Until we see Beck play with the starters, we are really just guessing. I cannot wait for the preseason so we can finally see this guy play. Oldfan
The video Mickalino posted of Beck's 70-yard pass is evidence of sufficient arm strength. Joe Montana never threw that far in his life. The WCO was designed for accurate short-to-medium range passers who can hit receivers on the move to produce YAC.

I am on record as thinking Beck has the right skill-set to be successful in this offense. I do not know if Beck will pan out, but I am intrigued. Rudechain
http://espn.go.com/blog/nfceast ... John Beck was intercepted by DeAngelo Hall on consecutive pass attempts at one point during 11-on-11 drills, which wasn't exactly awesome. But he threw some nice deep balls, including one beauty that Anthony Armstrong dropped... This was from the second day of camp. Did his arm suddenly gain strength? Or is everyone getting into a tizzy over nothing?

What Santana Moss had to say..... http://blogs.fredericksburg.com/redskinsjournal/2011/08/01/santana-moss-i-want-to-be-a-redskin/ As for Beck? “John’s one of those guys who I think is a very confident guy,” Moss said. “It shows in the way he tries to handle his business. Beyond that, I don’t like to judge people off practice. I don’t want to get everybody all antsy-pants and think this is what we need to be looking at. I just feel like every day is a day for us to improve together, the whole offense, and when it’s time to really judge us, and really test [us], we’ll see then. But I think that everything he did last year … got him where he is today.” haha antsy-pants, has Moss been reading ES?

D-Day
If the defense stacks the line the ball won't be in the air for over 30 yards. The QB will have to get rid of it quick, you will find that a 80 yard TD is about 60 yards on the ground.
USS Redskins
Its an embarassment that we are forced to support this guy. Great guy I am sure but he isnt even a career backup. He is training camp fodder that should be going from team to team hoping to get a paycheck on a practice squad. Hope I am wrong. It just makes it more apparent that this "mgmt" has totally ignored the QB position after making one of the stupidest Win Now moves ever last year - which set the team back another couple of years. But heck, I get it... they have "changed" the organization...
justice98
Seventy yards is impressive, no two ways about it, but arm strength heaving it on a hail mary with no regard for where it's going, and throwing the deep ball when he needs to hit the guy in stride are two different things. And does that strength translate to drilling an out on the opposite hash mark are two different things, or fitting it into a tight window. I guess we'll see. Redskin Diehard
Poor Heath Shuler... He ended up being a much better politician than he ever was a pro quarterback. The guy actually had some decent qb skills. Unfortunately, because he was drafted so high, he was rushed into the bright lights of Washington, DC when he should have been learning how to manage a team. I seem to remember Heath getting killed most of the time too. Man... We got spoiled by the Hogs. Beck will be ok. Did all the people tweeting about him really expect him to go out on the field with guys he's playing with for the first time in many cases and light it up like Tom Brady in his prime. Its amazing how Social Media can create a story that takes on a life of its own. I would love to have Andrew Luck or Sam Bradford under center for the skins. Well, that's not the case so the most productive thing to do in lieu of panicking is get behind Beck, give him time to develop chemistry with this totally revamped offense, sit back relax and let things play out. Everything will be ok. We've got some decent ballers now and many of them are probably on the verge of peaking. Unless, Grossman comes in and takes the job... In Beck We Trust!
