With the NFL's free agent frenzy kicking off tomorrow at 10am, it will be an interesting time for the NFC East. With rosters expanding to 90 players, teams will be adding on average about 50 new names to their squad. Included among those are teams re-signing their own free agents, signing other veteran free agents, draft picks and undrafted rookie free agents. The Eagles and Redskins will both have upwards of $20 million in cap space to play with. The Giants and Cowboys however, are in the red.

The Cowboys are currently $13.9 million over the cap, which is the second highest number in the league, behind only the Raiders, who are unbelievably $14.9 million over. Dallas is in a tough position because not only would this make it tough to pursue top free agents, it also hampers their ability to re-sign their own key free agents like RT Doug Free, who is set to get a major pay day.:ols:

Of course, there are things Dallas can do to get under the cap. Namely, releasing veterans like Marion Barber and Roy Williams, both of whom make pretty good money that their production doesn't really justify. Getting rid of Barber would save $4.75 million while cutting Williams would save a whopping $12.9 million. So, those two moves alone would at least get them back to even. They could also let go of guys like Terence Newman, Leonard Davis and Marc Colombo and recoup another $7-8 mil in cap space. That said, the Cowboys will not likely be major players in free agency this year and their likely standard of offseason success will be whether they can retain Free.

The Giants are $6.1 million over the cap but they can get under much easier. By cutting former Eagle Shawn Andrews and his $7.5 million cap figure, the Giants are back in the black. However, they also have several major decisions to make that could force several more cuts to make room. Starting RB Ahmad Bradshaw is an unrestricted free agent that will likely demand pretty big money to keep. WR Steve Smith is a free agent and despite coming off an injury filled year, could draw interest as well. The Giants will also have to figure out what to do with Osi Umenyiora, who has publicly criticized the team about their unwillingness to give him a new contract. In fact, in the lawsuit the player filed against the owners, Umenyiora was a named plaintiff and alleged in an affidavit that the Giants lied to him about negotiating a new deal. So whether to trade him or give him a big new contract will be another major issue.

All salary cap info comes from ESPN.

Now when is the deadline to get your salary cap straight? Can the Cowboys sign any FA's until they're under the cap?

My understanding is that you can do whatever you want as long as you're under the cap by the deadline. You could sign five players and go up to $25 million or whatever as long as by the deadline you've cut that $25 million in some way.

That sucks... That would have made teams under the cap have so much of an advantage over the others...

I see Barber, Davis, Newman, Roy Willy and Colombo all gone.

Barber and Colombo for sure.

I think Colombo and Barber are gone. I think Newman depends on who we can sign. Roy and Davis are here for at least another season. It would cost more to cut them then to keep them and then we would still have to go out and sign players to fill their spots.

Which teams would that be? The Vikings, maybe? Who do they have behind Peterson?

Minnesota is a definite option. My thoughts on Marion, is that you want him taking 5-10 carries a game. He can still be effective if used correctly. In Dallas they tried to use him as more of an open field runner (tosses, counters, delayed draws). If he were to go to a team with a pair of solid maulers in the middle at guard, I have no doubt Marion could be solid for another few years.

Colombo and Barber are as good as gone. With Tyron Smith and DeMarco Murray being drafted they have seen the writing on the wall.

I do not believe Mike Jenkins is ready to be a true #1 corner in this league. Jenkins is mediocre at best right now. If you take Newman out of the equation Mike gets to cover more #1 receivers. He struggled against guys like Jeremy Maclin, Devin Hester, Kenny Britt .... what happens when he has to face DeSean or any other legit #1? He has little to no Safety help on 95% of the time (The other 5% Alan Ball trips over his shoe lace at the start of the play, stands up and is in position ;)). Cutting Newman would make our porous secondary even worse.

IMO, Dallas should release Marion Barber, Marc Colombo, Leonard Davis. Ask guys like Roy Williams, Igor Olshanky and T-New to restructure their deals. This would also free up a ton of cap space. Sign a guy like Michael Huff to fill the Safety void.

IMO they should shoot Roy Williams since he was the biggest trade bust of the decade. That guy is a POS.

Barber was a great player, but his production dropped as soon as they put him in as the starting back and signed him to a big contract. I don't think the guy is lazy, his body just broke down with all the effort he put into the few years he was a monster. Too bad, though I'm glad he's no longer the thread for Dallas that he was.

They have to resign Free or their OL looks almost as bad as the Skins'.

Oh he was a beast. Only problem for Dallas, this was 3 years ago lol.

And for about 3 minutes.

Can the Skins officially give the Boys the key to the cellar?

Good to be home again, right Boys?

The Redskins have finished last place in the NFCe 5 of the last 7 years. Which is more times than Dallas has finished last in their 51 year history. You know, just sayin'

Also the Cowboys will be freeing up about 14.5 million in just restructuring of Ware, Austin, and Romo sits to pee's deals, when combined with just Barber will put them under the cap. Also expect Newman and Davis to take big pay cuts if they stay with the team, Dallas has lots of options for cap relief.

Well, if the eagles and cardinals didn't suck so bad back in the day...

So if they make all the above moves and everybody complies, how exactly is the team any better? aging with too many holes.

The Boys past couple of drafts appear to be disasters (we'll see)

And, yet, since 2000, the Skins have double the number of playoff wins than the pukes...just sayin'

I still keep wondering how folks have this thought process that MB III was ever anything special.

He NEVER has had a 1,000 yd season in his six year career.

Now, that is one IMPRESSIVE hype machine those pukes have.

BTW, for those puke fans who think losing all of this aged 'talent' at one time will hardly impact the team, I'd suggest you have your head planted firmly in the sand.

The guys who will be cut had their production fall off sharply last year, and your teams' record reflected it.

Your problem is that you'll still have plenty of non-producers in key spots and tons of question marks as replacements in others.

Look out for blackouts!

The Cowboys runningbacks, sure fell off the map rather quickly. Julius Jones, Marion Barber, Felix Jones

I could see one of the giants runningbacks coming to the skins for camp competition.

While not living up to the expectations of a first round pick, Felix Jones was actually quite solid in the second half of last season. He was particularly good as a receiver, picking up 450 yards and only one drop in 49 pass attempts.

Well, to put things in perspective, we had a guy straight off the practice squad with similar receiving numbers:

Well, that's just spectacular...

Puke fans forget the troubles they had in the red zone for so long...there's a direct correlation between an anemic running game and red zone efficiency.
