Winning the Superbowl... Next Season.

holy crap no. Have we learned anything from the last ten years?

This. We've sucked way too long to just be able to "turn it around" with a few players. We need a couple of more years of good drafts and to take our lumps. Patience by the fanbase would help this team alot. I know, I know, we've been waiting a long time, but give this FO more than one year to implement the changes.

1) I stopped at Burress.

2) I came back and read the rest. McNabb was terrible with the deep ball regardless of what the stats said. Go back and watch the games and a very large chunk of them were grossly underthrown. He ain't Rypien.

3) Offensive linemen aren't just sitting around; they're on teams. You can't just pluck them.

You don't mean to imply thay Rypien was a better QB than Mccnabb do you. LOL

Let's not get ahead of ourselves here. We are anywhere from 3-5 years out from being a contender (much less win the thing). We are more than a few OL and Plax from being a feared team and one to run deep in the playoffs. We have plenty of prospects from this draft but let's not forget they are unproven in the NFL. I am happy with the selections overall but keep in mind that roughly half will probably not make the team or be relegated to practice squad before the season starts. The keepers from this years draft IMO will be Kerrigan, Jenkins, Hank, Helu, Neild, Paul - PS, Robinson - PS, Gomes - PS, Hurt - PS. This fills out some areas of need but does not address our three biggest issues OL, DL, QB. I believe OL will be partially addressed this season through FA with Joseph and Harris, and shifting Licht to Center. DL will be a mess if we do not find a quality NT (im on the Franklin bandwagon until Neild can get up to speed, 2-3 years, Bryant should be kept as a role player, not starter). DE is still a question mark. Im not convinced Jenkins will be a stud for some time and our end opposite Carriker is potentially, Daniels, Gholston, or Jarmon - none of which inspire confidence. This position will take several years to work out. QB is a major problem if Beck does not pan out. I believe Grossman will be resigned and will start until his turnover (including fumbles)/TD ratio is +6 (probably by week 4). If Beck comes in and does well we will be contenders within 3 years. If he is mediocre or sucks (probably the case) we will need to draft a quarterback and groom him. That will delay us being a true contender for at least 3 years, more likely 4-5 years. Below are some of my thoughts.

1) Do not sign Plax. we have plenty of youth and if we did sign him, who would lose their spot to him? Im thinking we keep 5-6 receivers and they will be Moss (re-sign), Armstrong, Kelly, Hank, Austin (he looked good last year), and maybe Banks (if Paul shows he can return we cut Banks and go with Paul). I wouldnt want Plax to replace any of those receivers on the list.

2) Our goals should be: This year, finish 8-8 and not be last in the NFC East. Show dominance over lesser teams and compete against quality opponents. Develop our youth (which for some reason has been a major issue for 15 years). Next year, compete for playoffs if we stick with Beck and find decent OL. If we draft a QB next year in round 1, groom him for a potential deep run in the 2015 season.

3) No matter how bad this season is, do not fire Shanahan or make any coordinator changes until at least the end of next season, 2012. It should be a new rule to keep coaches in DC for a minimum of 3 years (unless your last name is Zorn).

These are just my thoughts, feel free to disagree.

I think he was implying that Rypien threw a great "deep ball", not that he was a better QB.

Why would you want him? Or any other wide out for that matter?

We've steadily put together a quality young receiving core of Austin, Banks (A return specialist it's true. But still someone who's lightening speed needs to be accounted for the plays he's in on offense), Hankerson, Kelly (touch wood he's over the injury bug), Paul and Robinson. 6 players under 24. Throw in Armstrong at 28, and even if we don't re-sign Moss, that's a pretty darn good looking core to develop these coming years.

I seriously don't get why people still think receivers a need here. Even less so when we're WAY more than a Plaxico Burress or whomever from challenging.

Hail.

Seriously man I can't agree with this post at all and see it as just a fan believing in his team when reality just doesn't agree...

1. Moss was 4th in the league last year in catches, and was our #1 wideout who isn't a "we can lose him, we don't need him" kinda guy. We need Moss much more then you think. Moss was our most consistant offensive player last year. We lose him what do we got to replace him?

2. While we do have some young receivers who out of those young guys has ever shown they can be counted on - Austin (Done nothing), Banks (Done nothing), Hankerson (Done nothing), Kelly (Done nothing but stay injured), Paul (Done nothing) and Robinson (Done nothing). I get that three of these guys were just drafted but how anyone can think that you can go into a season with this group of players and feel confident about the passing game just doesn't make any sense to me. It's 50-50 they all work out or they don't. We don't know. If we rely too much on that working out it could come back and screw us in the end.

3. The forgotten "receivers" here to me are our two outstanding TE's. If we ever get smart about the passing game and can pass protect Davis and Cooley would be deadly provided that we have WR's who can stretch the field. If we don't have WR's to keep the defensive backfeild honest it will stunt what the TE's can do. Its vital that we have a threatening WR group

All good man. The World would be a boring place if we all agreed.

We're in the midst of a rebuild. We develop the youth. I'm expecting little to nothing from this O this year with or without Santana. So a years playing time for another young wideout to take his licks and get used to the pros works for me.

Again, I'm expecting little this year. It's a totally dead year results wise for me. That group, outside of the this years rooks, have done nothing through a combination of injury, boneheaded under usage by successive coaching staffs, and mediocre QB play. Now I don't see the mediocrity under center changing this year, but at least they'll be involved getting on the job experience that can only benefit us going forward

By the same token as your reticence to go with youth as it may not work it, if you continue with the same tired and failed vets, your gona' be no closer in future years. This coming season is, or at least should be, a developmental season with a view on years 3, 4 and 5 under this regime.

Man after my own heart bro. I've lost count of the number of times I've posted about the serious threat we have in Cooley and FreddyD. (If the boneheaded OC would ever remember he's even on the roster.). And the added threat in the passing game we have in some very promising receiving backs. But then until we get anything remotely resembling a competent pro QB it's all a moot point.

Another reason why another year in the cellar of the league won't be a bad thing at all.

Hail.

Actually Boston - this is a post of THIS is NOT the year. I don't agree necessarily with the OP, but just pointing it out....

Um, what?

The thread was created with the sole purpose of showing how the Redskins can "go all in" and win THIS year. Of course, with the lockout and all, it's still specualtion, hopes, and hearsay as to what the Skins are actually going to do. Even the most optimistic of Redskins fans (I like to include myself in this category) should have been shot down with the realities of last season. The team is nowhere close to competing. But, I digress...:beatdeadhorse:

This is why your one of my favorite peeps on this forum. Respectful conversations are awesome brother even when we disagree

Honestly put the whole premise of "superbowl" out of the equation, I think that's just silly. I was speaking about your thoughts on the receivers. My point here is that if the receiver position is so weak it would certainly hurt every aspect of the team, from RB's to pass protection, to the TE's etc. The only way we can ensure that our receivers don't go to crap immediately is to re-sign Moss. We know what the offense can do with Moss in the fold. We don't know what it can do without Moss. I think what your suggesting to get rid of Moss is a very risky move and I don't think other teams would agree to do that. Look at Carolina. Steve Smith could be traded but they keep him around because they know he is the only consistant threat they have. Moss is the same way. It doesn't matter if we win 3 or 13 games next year, if we want to take the safe approach you keep Moss around. If your into risky business then we let him walk. Maybe the answer is a 2 year extenstion instead of a 4-5 year contract. That way we can ease the offense into the new regime while taking care of business in the mean time.

2. While I agree with you I don't think its that simple.

Do you think Armstrong would have had the season he did last year without the defenses keying first on stopping Moss?

I think Moss helps not hurts those guys. He takes the pressure away, he creates lanes for running for the other guys, he keeps the chains moving so the other players can get more reps. I don't see how Moss staying hurts us

By the same token as your reticence to go with youth as it may not work it, if you continue with the same tired and failed vets, your gona' be no closer in future years. This coming season is, or at least should be, a developmental season with a view on years 3, 4 and 5 under this regime.

I don't know if its just my reaction to what's happened here before but for some reason I hate this idea, ALOT.

First focusing on years 3-5 isn't certain. This is the Not For Long league. I'm not at all certain that Shanny even gets or wants a year 3, 4, or 5. If he completely tanks this year he's more likely not to get the full contract then if the team keeps improving.

Second I'm not a believer in the "we are totally boned this year" camp either. Maybe its the strike seasons of yesteryear but wasn't this team a 6-10 club last year and beat both of the teams who appeared in the NFC Championship game not to mention beat the eventual Superbowl champions? Wasn't this team the same group that won 3 of 4 overtime games played? Wasn't this the team that had it gotten alot better production from Gano very likely to have ended last year 10-6 instead of 6-10? Isn't this the team who really hasn't had much turn over of players and playmakers so far this year and gotten significantly better with the addition of those 12 draft picks and who is sitting in the best position for free agency this year?

Now its my turn to take the "remove your B&G glasses and walk away from the keyboard" comments but turthfully I'm not buying the "screw this year" talk. Will we suck? Who knows. Probably but at the same time isn't it usually year 2 in the 3-4 when a defense gets it together? Im not saying we are going to be good, but I don't think we are going to be worse next year then last season. The only players we likely are going to lose that was significant to us last year are Moss, McNabb, and Rogers. And if those guys are worth those wins then we should keep them. I think Moss is the only guy I want to see us hold onto

3. The forgotten "receivers" here to me are our two outstanding TE's. I believe the lack of two TE sets is more to do with pass protection then anything else. We have a crappy line so one guys back to protect. I want us to go out in FA this year and build the new Offensive line more then I want to see us do anything else. If we do, we can use a Patriots like offense. If we ignore it we might as well turn out the lights on this year and any future years until we once again have a dominate offensive line

[/color]How do the Jets make a run almost every year?

Adding good players in the draft and getting some good free agents (Edwards and Holmes)

Wouldn't be much different than that.

We had a lot of talent that we built up through the years before Rex Ryan walked in the building. We struck gold in free agency and we've had a couple of successful drafts with him here (Sanchez, Greene, Slauson) but also some bad or the jury's still out picks (Wilson, Ducasse).

We added Bart Scott, Santonio Holmes, Braylon Edwards, Jim Leonhard, Antonio Cromartie, LaDainian Tomlinson (back-up at this point though).

However, we already had in place Thomas Jones (he was a key factor in the 2009 Jets), Sione Pouha, Shaun Ellis, David Harris, Calvin Pace, D'Brickashaw Ferguson, Nick Mangold, Brandon Moore, Damien Woody, Jerricho Cotchery, Dustin Keller and not to mention that guy Darrelle Revis.

Do you think you have a cast as good as that to build upon and a defensive genius like Rex Ryan who hides a lot of the flaws that the lesser known players have?

---------- Post added June-29th-2011 at 03:28 PM ----------

FWIW, I think the Jets will crash and burn this year. Sanchez is the very definition of mediocre, and they can only ride that D and running game so far.

Sanchez is inconsistent and he's mediocre, but the defense and running game can win you championships and the Jets have been on the verge of the Super Bowl two consecutive seasons because of it. If Sanchez can step up his game just a little bit, this team is Super Bowl caliber. I agree with you that the defense won't last forever .. unless you build on it with fresh young blood. The Baltimore Ravens haven't won a Super Bowl since 2000 .. but they've never had a QB, either. Mark Sanchez, although not by much, is better than Joe Flacco. I agree that he's mediocre and unlike most Jets fans I think he will remain mediocre, with a ceiling of "good", but he'll never be great like most Jet fans expect. However, he's going into his third year in the NFL after starting only one year in college. He has time to improve and if he does, or if Shonn Greene does, this team can go the distance.

How about Vince Young for the Redskins? -- Could probably get him on the cheap from Tennessee and he's a better option than Beck and Grossman.

If Mike was running the offense I would agree. I'd send them Big Baby and a 7th for him in a second. However in Kyle's offense I don't think its as clear if he could produce for us

I think the problem is Kyle Shanahan. It's unfortunate that Donovan McNabb wasn't given a real chance to succeed.

Teams should be barred from having family members coach together.

Kinda hard to say that. McNabb was the player who was too good to use a play wristband. I mean if Tom Brady and Payton Manning can use them who in the hell is McNabb to say he won't do the same thing? I think McNabb sabotaged his time here because of his personal issues with race more then anything the coaching staff did to hold him back.

I aren't gona' go off on one on our bonheaded OC again ( 'praise the Lord' say the readers); suffice to say I'm not laughing at the irony of a Jets fan seeing what many don't. WAY more questions than answers still going forward about the OC.

---------- Post added June-29th-2011 at 02:52 PM ----------

Addicted man, it's a win/win for me on Moss.

If we don't retain him, a player I greatly admire hopefully get's picked up by a team with a realistic chance of success and he gets one last shot at glory that his career deserves; whilst we get to fully give youth it's head.

If we do re-sign him, we get to both keep a model pro vet. on the team that still produces, and can only help with the development of the youngsters within that; and we also probably get to see one of the most popular Redskins of recent times retire in the B&G. A win/win situation which ever way it plays out.

And I don't think we'll intentionally tank this year. I think we'll play our butts off every game as we did in year one, but with no QB and ergo little to no offense (unless Kyle up's his Run/Pass ratio, which I seriously doubt with or without an improved line), we'll continue to come up just short. Which in the grand scheme of things won't be a bad thing given the rich pickings in next years draft.

BTW, the feelings mutual man.

Hail.

With all due respect I understand that you're a J E T S fan but Joe Flacco is a better QB then Mark Sanchez wether you look statistically or from physical skillset.

I think Kyle will improve as an OC, based off last year there is no place to go but up.

Edit:I also think Mike Shanahan will *ahem* suggest Kyle be more balalanced this year.

I still have faith that Mike Shanahan can develop QBs and I believe that we wouldn't pass on the QB position in the draft without having a viable answer for the QB position.
