You know the best way to solve this problem is to charge those adults that give improper benefits with a felony. Most of this problem would go away if the feds passed legislation.

1) Yeah, I've thought for a long time that this "business model" we've got, where people completely ignore the rules, and where the only penalty for doing so is that, years after the people who broke the rules have left the scene of the crime, somebody will alter the school's official statistics, ain't working.

I've thought that a big part of the reason why breaking these rules has become not only routine, but required and defended, is because there is never even any attempt at delivering justice.

(Analogy: How many NFL linemen would commit offensive holding, if the only penalty for offensive holding was that, five years after the fact, the NFL would adjust the team's yards per pass attempt statistic?)

I've said for years that the only way this is ever going to stop is if there's a real investigation, by real law enforcement personnel, with real subpoena power, and the threat of real criminal prosecution. Maybe the way to do it would be to invoke the Al Capone Method, and to invoke the income tax evasion laws.

2) Or, an alternative I've thought of, to solve the problem of the university getting punished, but the individuals who actually broke the rules receive no punishment at all, and in many cases, are rewarded with better jobs, would be for the university to sue the individuals in civil court.

"Your Honor, plaintiff alleges that while he was a player at USC, Reggie Bush knowingly violated NCAA rules. And the result of his violations is punishment, directed at the university, which will cost the university $20M over the next 10 years. We are seeking $20M in actual damages, $200M in putative damages, and garnishment of one half of defendant's current and future earnings."

3) OTOH, you and I both know that the university is never going to do that. Because if the they actually start, say, threatening Reggie Bush with actual punishment, he's going to sing like a bird. He's going to announce, under oath, that "Hell, yeah, they knew. They all knew." He's going to name name, and dates, and methods. Frankly, I assume that every major football program has a designated person who's sole job is coordinating the illegal payments that the players get. (Somebody has to make sure that the boosters don't all donate to Player X, and skip Player Y.)

There is also the train of thought that giving players a equal share of the money earned might reduce some of the greed. The athletes are the main reason we watch and they are the most likely to be punished. Makes no sense.

Could you mention the last time an athlete was punished for taking cash or any other gifts?

Reggie Bush should not give back anything and should tell those with a bright idea to donate his money to kiss where the sun don't shine.

College Presidents, Coaches and Conferences are making Billions off of these kids who are supposed to feel guilty about selling their own jersey when these same sanctimonious pompous anal retentive hypocrites have no problem pocketing profits from Jersey sales with that same players name on it.

Players on College teams that bring in huge profits should receive a percentage of the money and that he or she is getting a free college education nonsense is as played out as parachute pants. If star athletes paid their own way thru college cough student loan not an athletic scholarship would it be okay for them to receive perks then?

Once again imagine the corruption if players got a percentage of the profit. "Hey come to Penn State, we make more profit than Iowa whether you play or not." It'll increase corruption. These kids get plenty of free stuff with the scholarship, keep down tuition of the other students with the profits.

Charge boosters and other offenders with felonies and it'll almost eliminate the problems. You'll always have cheaters, but having teeth to the rules will curb it almost entirely.

The people that make the most money are the people running the bowls. The NCAA literally outsources it's postseason. Most schools LOSE money on the bowls.

Paying players wont stop corruption. Here Terrell Pryor, take $500 a month.........now you don't want the brand new car Joe Booster is going to hand you, right?

Plus, are all players going to be paid the same? Can the non-BCS conferences afford that? Or will the SEC, Big-10, and Pac-10 be able to pay more because they can afford more, and if so, will students just pick the school that pays them the most rather than the one that has the most to offer them as a, you know, school.

What about Title 9? Will basketball players get paid too? What about female athletes from non-revenue generating sports? Are schools really going to pay them? Where is all that money going to come from? Keep in mind that only about half of all schools MAKE money from football and basketball, the rest operate in the red. Only 19 schools in the country as of 2008 had athletic departments than made money overall.
