AsburySkinsFan
I got nipped by the Windows 7 Recovery virus yesterday, on my pc that is about a week and a half old.... This nasty lil' bugger is a pain in the arse to get rid of, and I am still working on rooting this thing out and getting my pc back to normal, this sucker hides all of your program files, turns your background black, pings you with relentless fake warnings and fake system scans all to try and get you to buy a program that will remove it, at least I knew enough than to pay those bastages. The malware even protects itself and knocks down normal attempts to kill it, sucker was relentless last night, I've gotten a lot of help from www.bleepingcomputer.com and after 24 hours I almost have my pc back normal....dirt bags! Anyways, I guess I just wanted to rant, and maybe provide a place for folks to share their worst virus stories.

PokerPacker
I wish I knew how to do things like installing and using different operating systems. Most linux distributions should probably be pretty straight-forward to install. just pop in the CD and follow the instructions. If you're interested, Ubuntu and Mint seem to be the most popular for beginners (I've been an Ubuntu fan for a long time, but I can't say I like the direction they're moving in). They should be able to set up a dual-boot in the installation process so you can continue to use windows as you need, or you can even install windows inside of Linux via a program called Virtual Box. http://www.ubuntu.com/ http://www.linuxmint.com/ If you go the Ubuntu route, I highly suggest you choose the the Classic Ubuntu session option at the login screen. That gives you a Gnome desktop environment rather than the new Unity which, frankly, isn't very good (I'm sure this means nothing to you right now, but it'll come together with experience). One of the most important things to remember going into Linux is that it is not Windows. There will be different ways of doing things, and it can be quite confusing at first. If you're persistent, you'll become more and more familiar with the Linux convention and the terminal.

Yeah, I agree, I'm getting help from them right now, and even Norton's resolution to Windows 7 Recovery gives a link to them. I took that as a good sign. frostyj
http://www.extremeskins.com/showthread.php?344496-The-Computer-Help-Thread-New-Question-Post-40/page3Just follow my instructions. Spyware is always profile specific. Sounds similar to one I have had at work on 4 machines so far. This particular thing does affect more than just the users profile. Even as local admin system files are hidden as is the users profile. Undeleting does nothing, after reboot the are hidden again. I sent the first two machines to our security guy, The 2nd machine had a different version of the same. He spoke with folks at McAfee and it mutates as fast as they come out with definitions. It is nasty. We are just reimaging them as it's faster than manually cleaning.

Yeah the one that hides the files is nasty........We have a barracudda box for the internet and our employees only have user level access, but once in awhile they will catch a profile specific good ole antivirus scanner 2011 haha. Even though it's only profile specific, I also reimage the box just as a precaution. What's funny is, I can probably make 10x more money than work fixing family computers with the amount of spyware/viruses that people are getting. frostyj
I've dealt with that virus before. After many tries, all it took to fix was a system restore. If a system restore fixed it, it wasn't good infection or virus/mal/spyware whatever it's called. Most tend to disable a restore. But if a restore solved your issue, great, lots are not that lucky. and most of our pc report back to a bot somewhere, Facebook is a great start.
