3) Saw some good fireworks last 4th of July from the Florida Aquarium. The have a hockey team that goes further than the Caps. They have a football team that has is so so. State Fair is there in February. There's a nice casino near the state fairgrounds. Busch Gardens. Only an hour from all the fun things in Orlando. Does happen to be in path of hurricanes sometimes.

A favorite radio show of mine recently identified Tampa as a terrible, terrible place. Included in the evidence were:

1) A mailman who wrapped his mail truck around a tree and then apparently started wrestling snakes

2) The frequency of news reports that start with the line, "A Florida man [bLANK]." In this case, a Florida man ran out of cell phone minutes, so he started to talk with whoever picked up about anything after calling the one number that wouldn't cost him any money - 911. "This one's free."

3) A Godsmack hockey jersey sold for $199 in Tampa.

And, well, that's all you really need to know.

60K is good money anywhere.

He would be rich if he were living in West Virginia. Depends where you live. DC area has very high costs of living. I could've moved to DC instead of coming to Florida but I chose Florida. Partly because my sister lives here, so I am staying with here until I am back on my feet. Partly for the warm weather. One big thing though was the cost of living. DC is just to expensive.

Not in DC :ols:

yah I think that's just above the poverty line in DC.

Tampa is a nice place I think. One of the few places in Florida I would consider living. Flood Insurance can be a real concern, however. Grill your real estate agent.

:ols: No I cant. I have to live with my mom still on that salary. I wouldnt be able to afford much if I lived on my own in DC

Really? I was making less than that and was able to get a pretty nice apartment in Alexandria and still be comfortable - with a roommate of course.

Ah, that's why....I probably could afford it if I had a roommate. I'm not really comfortable rooming with people I dont know very well, and none of my friends have jobs in the NOVA/DC area to live with, so my options are slim.

and HA HA mardi gras - I just graduated 2 weeks ago, give me some time to build up a larger savings....I'm reorganizing my room at the moment and making purchases to prepare for moving out :pfft:

Agreed.

If you live within your means you can live on $20k. Out here its nearly impossible to find any place decent for less than $1k/month, and thats with roomates. At $60k that doesn't leave a whole lot left when you take out taxes, food, utiliites, car (if you have one, I don't) etc..

Another thing, there's no state income tax in Florida.

In case you missed it^^^ THIS!!!! So your $60k turns into $65k ish... I don't know too much about Tampa, one person who I know does would be DeanCollins, (and maybe Mick)... But I love the no state income tax... Weather's great, you'll have some good beaches down there too...

Girlfriend just got a job offer at MacDill AFB in Tampa

A few questions

1) Where is a safe/good place to live?

You can get some very useful information on this, from either A&E's or TruTV's real-life crime shows.

There is a different murderer or serial killer in the Tampa area, showcased on each and every one of their shows.

And they usually identify which neighborhoods and parts of town, that the murderer went on his killing spree, so that should directly help you figure out what are the good and bad parts.

My dad lived in St Pete Beach. I spent a lot of time there, and was not favorably impressed. It did not feel very... very cultured or intellectual. But everyone is different, and some people really like it. Dean Collins really likes it and is a good source of info.

Oh yes it does. With 60K, you just can't have the biggest house and 3 late modeled cars, but you can live on 60K.
