DWinzit
Ray Lewis: Crime rate will rise if lockout lingers Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis believes there will be an increase in criminal activity if the NFL lockout lasts into the regular season. And he’s not talking about crime committed by NFL players. Lewis told ESPN’s Sal Paolantonio that he thinks there’s a segment of the population that will be at risk of turning to criminal activity if there’s no football to watch on Sundays in the fall. “Do this research if we don’t have a season — watch how much evil, which we call crime, watch how much crime picks up, if you take away our game,” Lewis said. “There’s too many people that live through us, people live through us. Yeah, walk in the streets, the way I walk the streets, and I’m not talking about the people you see all the time.” Asked to explain why crime would increase without NFL games, Lewis said: “There’s nothing else to do, Sal.” Lewis said he hopes that both sides in the labor dispute can put pride and ego aside and consider what their failure to reach an agreement says to the average fan. “There’s people who are really struggling for real,” Lewis said. “There’s real struggles out there.” http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/05/22/ray-lewis-crime-rate-will-rise-if-lockout-lingers/
Hitman21ST
So let's get this thing taken care of. Ray Ray, you carry a loud voice when it comes to the players, talk to De Smith to get this behind you.
gkekoa
This was one of the dumber statements I have heard come out of professional athletes mouths...right behind Latrell Sprewell saying he couldn't feed his family on 7 mil/year. It wouldn't be so bad if he was referring to NFL football players b/c that has been proven this offseason. They have been in more trouble than in year's past. Instead he said it about you and me...saying, there is nothing else to do. Where does he get that? So people revert to crime when their hobby becomes obselete? I have an idea, why don't we just find another hobby to occupy our time and put our money into.
DWinzit
“Do this research if we don’t have a season — watch how much evil, which we call crime, watch how much crime picks up, if you take away our game” This part sounds like he's speaking about the players and he should have stopped there. Ray has not had the cleanest of history when given a little extra free time!

It wouldn't be completely out of the question for crime rates to go up due to simple lifestyle changes like not being able to follow your favorite football team. In Russia, during the 80's or 90's, there was a heat wave that lasted for several weeks and the violent crime rate was almost non-existent during it. They later attributed it to people not wanting to make the effort because it was too hot. I would bet it's similar in any poor weather. I wouldn't be shocked if crime went up if there were an extended lockout. I think Lewis is right. Not that guys in their 40's with families and full time jobs are going to start mugging old women because we can't watch football, but other people who have a lot less to live for might go looking for something to "liven" up their lives on days when they'd be sitting at home watching football. I'm not saying it's definite, but it is possible, IMO. Obviously, with the players, it's shown true.
Beans
What a maroon. What an over-inflated sense of self worth. Life can easily go on without football.
KDawg
Folks, I think a lot of you are forgetting that a very large portion of NFL fans are kids and adults who are very at-risk. A lot of them watch football on Sundays instead of running the streets. I see what he's saying. He's not talking about the vast majority of fans, but we'd be fooling ourselves if we didn't believe that there is a large portion of fans who are at-risk. This will only expose them to the streets more often. Granted, those that will commit the crimes may have anyways, but now there will be no distraction. Enter Apotheosis
I'm not sure about overall crime rates but I actually wouldn't be surprised at all if crimes occurring specifically during times when NFL games are traditionally scheduled go up slightly during an extended lockout. gkekoa
Here's the thing: the people who are truly affected and may revert to crime are the vendors and those who have lost their true lively hood. Fans will not resort to crime just b/c football isn't being played. Criminals have 6 other days in the week to be criminal.
NoVaSkins21
What a maroon. What an over-inflated sense of self worth. Life can easily go on without football. qft. When I first read this I thought it made some sense, then I went back and read the part about "our game" I thought is this guy really serious. As if this fool and his football brethren is the only thing that keeps society functioning. Guys like him and Adrian Peterson are why there's a lockout to begin with. Seriously, he really must think that football isn't going to take a hit whenever it does come back.

Like KDawg said, I don't think he's necessarily saying people who aren't already criminals, or criminally inclined, are going to start robbing banks because they can't watch football. I think he's saying people who are already criminally inclined will now have more time for those things because there's not the distraction of football to get in the way of their criminal activities. ---------- Post added May-22nd-2011 at 09:57 PM ---------- Last year the Redskins played and every game I attended I felt like I was robbed. :rotflmao:, then maybe he's completely wrong and there will be LESS criminal activity. You would just commit the crime another day or time.
Reaper 21
this should have only been about players, they are the ones with all the money and to much free time, the rest of us have real jobs working and going to school or whatever it is that we do. Criminals commit crimes, all week long not monday through saturday. A lot of players will be arrested for drugs, and club violence guarantee it. You would just commit the crime another day or time. That was exactly what we were saying, BUT, if you're a criminal and normally commit crime 5 days a week because you like watching football, now you won't have the distraction and will be able to commit all week to crime. Just like some of us get work off to watch the NCAA tournament, some people will put off their "hobby" to watch football on the weekends. Even if it's just a couple days, it's still a couple days they aren't focusing on committing crime. It's not like they become criminals because there's no football, it's that maybe they have nothing else to distract them from it.
KDawg
I work with kids who are troubled on a daily basis... And let me tell you... A lot of them get into trouble because they're bored and have nothing else to do. No joke. Now, that speaks to a problem, for sure, that they pass their time by doing stupid stuff, but boredom leads to problems. This is why things like recreational programs help kids. It keeps them occupied and away from other things. It amazes me how fast people are dismissing this notion.

penasquito
Weren't there some statistics on crime when MNF first started? I agree with KDawg, I think Lewis is on to something here. Probably not expressed in the most eloquent way, but a valid point.
