Darth Tater
Given the lockout situation, the backup vets probably have more leverage than a late round pick or UDFA that pretty much needs to learn the position. Unless there's a real cracker jack OLB available in FA, I don't see that route open. We cut AC, so we need 1 OLB body anyway and that'll probably be Kerrigan (he could always be a bust or get hurt though). Wilson or Jackson are probably as close to roster locks as you can get and the other one probably has the edge over the late pick who'll likely be cut (in part because he could be put on the PS), traded or IRed. SkinsTillIDie
Wilson has had ample opportunity over the last four years to prove that he belongs in this league, that he can contribute as a consistent pass rusher. More or less, he's failed to do that. And at 29, he's likely not going to get any better. Even last season, when we were desperate for productivity at strong side outside linebacker, Wilson barely saw the field. Rob Jackson looked far more effective in his two games then Wilson ever did. I can't see what it is that Wilson does well -- he's supposed to be a pass rusher, that's why he's on the roster, that's what he's supposed to bring to the table. But he hardly ever brings any semblance of pressure, not even as a situational 3rd down pass rusher when he's more fresh then everyone else on the field. I don't see what he's done to earn a spot on next year's roster, and I fully expect that Tandler got this right: Jackson makes the team, White makes the practice squad, and Wilson gets cut. When Riley and Jackson starting seeing playing time over McIntosh and Alexander/Carter near the end of the year, for the first time in a long time, it seemed like we had legitimate speed at linebacker. It was refreshing to see: that explosiveness from the position. Wilson's never brought that to the table. And as a situational guy and depth guy, I think Jackson could fill a Chris Clemons-type role for us. He even briefly displayed a nice bevy of pass rushing moves -- getting Orakpo, Kerrigan and Jackson on the field at the same time on 3rd down could be a productive group in pressuring the quarterback, long-term. tml6157
I think we should really consider moving Zo to 3-4 DE. He has the work ethic to pull it off and thats where he can be used the most. He has a bit of pass rushing ability and is good against the run. A perfect 3-4 DE he just needs to add a bunch of weight but he can do it. Having Carriker, Jenkins, Jarmon, Daniels and Alexander as DEs is a good base to build off. If are serious about Cullen Jenkins then the DL can easily become a position of strength. I feel like at this point, it's too late to force Alexander to make ANOTHER whole series of changes, both completely altering the shape of his body once again while also learning a whole brand new position (having never played 3-4 end before). I see him as a capable run-down linebacker, capable of playing inside or outside, while also contributing as a stellar special teamer. He's a situational guy, which isn't a bad thing to have. SMU Redskin
Lorenzo Alexander is going to be starting at ILB next to Fletcher. Wilson and Jackson are going to be the backups at OLB. Riley and Blades are most likely going to be the backups at ILB. Henson?

I've thought the same since we made the switch. He came into the league as a 43 DT with pass rushing ability. I think he would make for a good DE too. Darth Tater
Unless you are saying that Haslett can come up with some revolutionary 3-4 concepts on par with LeBeau figuring out how to use the 3-4 as a great pass defense as well as one of the better general purpose run defenses, OLB is the best spot for Zo in a 3-4. Can you elaborate? I'm certainly no authority on the matter. It just seems to me that Zo is capable of handling it.
