A source on players' side said the NFL in today's letter left open possibility of players resuming mediation with decertification intact.

Players' side is to release its letter to the NFL. Players side is saying it has accepted Judge Nelson's offer for federal court mediation.

The lockout will be over in 2 weeks, new CBA or no new CBA. I'd be extremely surprised to see Judge Nelson side with the NFL in this case.

If that happens, expect a quick appeal from the owners. This isn't close to being done.

First the result of the judgement is far from a sure thing, the NFL could well get the verdict. irrespective though whichever side loses will be taking this to appeal so the legal process - and lockout - will be going on much longer than two weeks absent an unforeseen breakthrough in talks in that period.

The NFLPA Twitter is very misleading. The judge never "offered" mediation; she just hinted that both parties should solve their differences in mediation.

Now the big difference. NFLPA wants mediation under the jurisdiction of the court as part of a court settlement. The NFL wants to return to Cohen as the mediator where the mediation could end in a CBA WITHOUT court oversight.

Huge difference. This is not progress at all. The NFL wants out from under court jurisdiction. The NFLPA wants a judge who will favor their interpretation of the CBA on their side.

We are back at square one.

Nope. IF Judge Nelson rules in favor of the NFLPA, the NFL will will appeal the decision which will be in front of an appellate court filled with Reagan and Bush appointees; presumably a much more business friendly court than Judge Nelson or most of her court brethren. Even then, it could be appealed to the US Supreme Court.

Unless the NFLPA agrees to mediation with Cohen, this thing will be in the courts for at least several months.

No courts. They want some Obama hack to mediate a union dispute? Of course they do.

If the NFL players are worth it, let them go elsewhere and try and make the same money. Free Markets baby. To force the NFL to pay them what they want or else have legal reprecussions is insane. No other job is like that. Crush this fake union and that slimey D. Smith.

You need to keep in mind the players aren't simply employees of the owners, they are also the product of the league. They would be in far worse shape if the players went off and made their own league than they are right now. Sure they might only have half the payroll but they would offer a far inferior product than they currently have, brand loyalty would help them out for a while but you would start bleeding fans to other sports over time.

This whole thing with people yelling about free markets and ungrateful players aren't really thinking this through from a numbers stand point. They're backing an ideology but the owners know they need the players just as much as the players need them.

Amen. All this anti-labor ideaology is puzzling to me. In the end both parties have to compromise, they are co dependent for maximum successs.
