The following is a letter from Redskins Executive Vice President/General Manager George Allen to Redskins fans on the NFL labor negotiations:

Dear Redskins Fans:

Last Friday, negotiations between the NFL and the NFL Players Association ended without a new Collective Bargaining Agreement. Unfortunately, the union’s abandonment of bargaining and subsequent decertification led to the league’s difficult but necessary step to lock out, something we tried hard to avoid. We remain committed to getting a new deal done and believe that the fastest way to a fair agreement is through mediation and not litigation.

We share your disappointment with the lack of progress. The offer that the union walked away from was fair and addressed many of the key issues, including a rookie compensation system, enhanced player healthy and safety measures, improved retired player benefits and compromises on the union’s financial demands.

Of particular importance to the Washington Redskins were the additional benefits the proposal would have provided to retired players. Our organization is rich in history and we are proud of the men who have contributed to our glorious past and helped create our great fan base that we all benefit from today. The Redskins alumni continue to play an integral role within our community, and the union’s decision to walk away from a deal that would have benefited our retired players is especially disappointing.

What's the difference between a Vice President and an 'Executive Vice President'?:pfft:

"Executive" means that you are not responsible for booking racquetball court times.

Did the redskins ever release downsizing of staff during a lockout? I feel like I read some things but nothing official

You know, right now, the NFL/Owners are really winning the PR battle. At least in my opinion. Breeze can claim all he wants that the last offer was a sham, but the owner's position of "well, you didn't even want to look at it further for more than a few hours? We would have agreed to an extension" is pretty damning. IF the NFL would have agreed to an extension, and the NFLPA didn't want one, then the finger really does point to them wanting to get out of negotiations and into litigation.

Then they come up with this silly draft boycott. And as far as I can tell, most people think that's pretty petty. This is the first thing that the fans are going to really miss, and the NFL is inviting the players, and the players are trying to say, "don't go."

And this letter from Allen is brilliant. It offers very little information, is well written (I'm sure he didn't write it, but a lot of thought went into the wording), appeals to the fans sense of loyalty, and expresses frustration. It hit all the right notes.

I was so solidly on the players side in this, especially with the bogus $4B TV contract thing, but now, I'm really starting to swing the other way. The best thing for everybody is to sit down and figure it out. It's really not that hard. If Gene Upshaw was around, even though he presided over 2 work stoppages, for some reason, I just feel that this wouldn't have happened. Ultimately, he and Tags would have gotten in a room, discussed things off the record, and worked something out. D. Smith and Goodell have just made a hash job of this thing.

Until a few weeks ago I was solidly on the side of the players, but after watching that ass clown D Smith , and heard the stupid **** coming out of Brees' mouth I have come to the solid conclusion that the NFLPA was planning to de-certify all along. All the NFL fans that I know feel the same way I do, so if the players want to have any credibility at all they need some serious damage control to happen now.

Letters like this to the fans from GM's and owners just solidifies the position of the NFL, rest assured that Redskin fans aren't the only fans getting letters like this. There is a reason that the owners and GM's are in their positions "hint" they are smarter than most people including the players and their reps.

This is all due to that idiot D Smith. He just comes off as a scumbag and i have found myself siding with the owners now rather than the players. The owners came way down on their numbers and yeah i feel they should have extended the deadline and kept working from there.

Hey look, the Redskins have a real GM.

The usual management nonsense. Every team in the league is firing off something like this, though are doing it in classier fashion than the Skins.

The one I got from the Saints lacked this kind of anti-union propaganda and was more along the lines of "we are doing our best and remain dedicated to the fans who helped us succeed".

{didn't the owners opt out of the contract on the grounds that they were having financial trouble but refuse to give audited finacial data to back it up. -note they gave something but NFPA fincial auditor said it was not sufficient}

We share your disappointment with the lack of progress. The offer that the union walked away from was fair and addressed many of the key issues, including a rookie compensation system, enhanced player healthy and safety measures, improved retired player benefits and compromises on the union’s financial demands.

{the key issue was money for current players and the owners wanted more than 1 billion more- that issues was apparently a sticking point - and from what I heard 20 more new points were introduced by owners at the last meeting}

Of particular importance to the Washington Redskins were the additional benefits the proposal would have provided to retired players. {excuse me again - the owners walked away from the current contract & the concessions did not address the most important issue 18 games, and more money for owners & negotiations in bad faith by securing a 4 billion dollar loan at the expense of maximizing revenue thus taking money from players for the owners benefit}

Hey Crazy Levi --- why not go an troll Saints boards - Unions are bad news----the NFLPA by taking this action is working in who's interest ?- the players who may get one or more years chopped off their careers or the retired players ? The NFLPA seem to be working in the interest of the leaches that hang onto the game and big business for their survival --- agent and laywers---

There was never any chance the NFLPA was going to do anything but de-certify and should have done 2 years ago and forced the subject then . Public opinion is swinging away from the players who are coming across as petty and greedy and things are going to get worse before they are getting better .
