thebluefood
But that was, like...a bazillion years ago, guys! Besides, it's not like World War I was a big deal or anything.
Predicto
Non-issue. No one is insulting or forgetting this Veteran or the Doughboys. Read the story. Boehner is setting up a special ceremony at Arlington National Cemetary, which seems perfectly appropriate. "In response to Buckles' death, both Sen. John "Jay" Rockefeller, D-W.Va., and Rep. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va. have introduced resolutions to allow Buckles to lie in honor inside the Rotunda of the U.S. Capitol, which would allow the public to pay their respects to Buckles by filing past his casket. This is a honor usually reserved for former presidents and distinguished members of Congress. On occasion, exceptions are made for extraordinary unelected average citizens. In 2005, Civil Rights hero Rosa Parks lay in state, and the honor was bestowed on two slain Capitol police officers in 1998. Before that, Gen. Douglas MacArthur was the last unelected person to lay in state in the Rotunda in 1964."
JMS
Is Boehner even a competent politician? One would think this would fall under the same politician reaction of a reflexive pucker every time he see's a baby. Boehner looks extremely un statesman like standing between a symbolic generational honor for All WWI vets here.. Non-issue. No one is insulting or forgetting this Veteran or the Doughboys. Non-issue? If Dug out Doug, the man who was awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroic abandonment of his men on Corregidor and his subsequent solo retreat in the face of the Japanese to Austrilia got such an honor; why not give it to the last man standing for a generation of American soldiers who gave so much for every generation who came after them? Lombardi's_kid_brother
I don't care for Boehner, but I don't really see what the big deal is here. We would be basically honoring the man for living an exceedingly long time. A ceremony in Arlington seems more than an appropriate remembrance for that generation of soliders. This man made national news when he died, not because of who he was but because of what he had become. Because people wanted to hear about him in the context of the Last servivor of WWI generation of soldiers. The last living member of a group of young men who answered the call on a massive scale when their Uncle Sam called. As such as a country we all paused to take note when he passed. It's fitting, as such a symbol, he be awarded this honor.

That is the difference between 1964 and now (and MacArthur's story is a bit more complicated than that, but nevermind.) Why not give a Week under the Rotunda to every veteran who dies in the line of duty? Or every police officer? Or every firefighter. There are lots and lots of people who deserve to have lying in state ceremonies at the Capitol, but you can't give it to all of them. Other business takes place there. Arlington National Ceremony is the fitting place for honoring our veterans. It is special. Don't undersell it. (does anyone notice that I am defending John Boehner here?)
