LeesburgSkinFan
Four cops beat the crap out of a reckless drivin', high as a kite, arrest evadin', no care for safety of others moron, and sparked a race riot. I ain't sayin' the cops were right, but Rodney wasn't exactly innocent either.
Riggo-toni
Ok, but do we really need to rehash this?
Predicto
No Rodney wasn't "innocent." He was, however, lying on the ground and completely defenseless and got beaten and kicked over and over and over and over and over by several out of control cops while a whole bunch of others stood around and did nothing. 1lroj7HDLj4 What is the point of this thread, may I ask? Lombardi's_kid_brother
It's amazing that what you took from that entire situation was that Rodney was high and the police were not right. Good lesson.
Dan T.
For the dozens and dozens of times I've seen that clip, I've never seen it with Randy Newman singing "I Love L.A." as a backdrop. Nicely done.

TGI Jef
every time i see this clip i keep thinking "ok NOW theyre done. they have to be." and then they start up again. no one deserves that kind of treatment under any circumstances - ever.
Predicto
Wow. I can not believe this. I don't even get the point of the thread or the question if there is one. I am guessing that the point of the thread is to say that the Rodney King riots were the fault of ... Rodney King? After all, the original poster "ain't saying the cops were right" exactly, he's just implying that Rodney deserved what he got. :whoknows: Certainly the riots could not have been a spontaneous mob action, the result of years and years of pent up frustration against the notorously brutal LAPD by people who saw in that one minute video clip a microcosm of the way they and their families and friends had been treated for decades by local law enforcement. No way.
USS Redskins
Cops were wrong. That said, Rodney King is a wife beating, serial drunk driving thief and all around s-bag that no one should really give any sympathy to (post beating).

No way. I am not defending either side here. I think both are pitiful. King has proven himself to be the man he is, and the cops proved themselves that night to the LA residents. Side note look for a PM from me. I have something to ask.
gbear
I know this was 20 years ago, but let us not pretend today's culture wouldn't stil have people standing around doing nothing. Hell, I am constantly surprised at what people just "let go." Last weekend, I was at the mall with my 2 kids when a young lady colapsed at the stall food kiosk next to us. After we had made sure she was breathing and gotten her into the rescue position we were lucky enough to have an EMT wandering through mall see and come over/ take over. As my kids and I are heading away, I notice this guy with his son laughing and taking pictures on his cell of the lady on the ground. I approached and deliberately stood right betwen him and the lady and told him it was rude to take pictures of somebody who has collapsed. He was highly indignant...but he and his son walked off muttering about "that black lady must have gotten herself some spiked drugs." WTH? The lady running the kiosk said she was so glad somebody ran them off...why the heck was I the only one? I then spent the next hour explaining to my kids why his rude comments and actions are an example of how not to act. So when you ask how it is that the on lookers did not intervene...I have no problem believing it. I hate that I believe it, but I do. People don't want to be a part of a society. They want to have comfy seats to watch and react in horror or occassionaly pride.

Lombardi's_kid_brother
It's important to remember that the LA Riots were not the result of the Rodney King beating. They were the result of ten-years-worth of Darryl Gates-led police abuse of the black community in LA. With the King beating, the proof of what was already widely known was released on a large scale. The acquittal of the officers was seen as an endorsement for the abuse. And that is what led to the riots.

I ain't sayin' the cops were right, but Rodney wasn't exactly innocent either. Two thoughts.. (1) are you actually trying to justify or mitagate the beating police gave Rodney King? (2) As I remember the COPs story was that Rodney and three other characters lead them on an 1100 mph high speed and reckless chase in his 10 year old Hyundia. I remember thinking at the time, what idiots the police were. In 1991 I was pretty sure a hyundia would have trouble going 80mph with one passenger. It was very hard to believe the police story.
