The Curious Nature of Hugo Chavez

I'm never quite sure what to make of him.

Is he the failed leader of a military coup and someone with autocratic tendencies? Is he a champion of the poor and a good leader? His efforts to provide support for the down trodden in his native Venezuela, in the U.S. and elsewhere make me wonder if he's a good guy or just smart about his PR. He has also been a big critic of the U.S. government especially in the early 2000's re Iraq or on issues concerning U.S./South American policy. Does he get his bad rep because of the cold war hangover and because he is unabashedly a socialist? Is it because he certainly sees Venezuela as a major and influential player on the world stage? Is he a deeply spirtual and religious man despite his attacks on Venezuela's churches and his accusations that they have neglected their duty to the poor? What does his attempts to arbitrate in Libya represent?

So, what do you think of him? Who do you think Hugo Chavez really is?

He is a power starved ego maniac who does not care about his people. He is also an idiot and if you watch his weekly shows on Sundays this quickly becomes apparent. People like to say he is a defender of the poor yet under his regime poverty has increased, violence has skyrocketed and freedoms have plummeted. People often like him for the same reasons they like Castro because he does such a good job playing the underdog and blaming the US.

He's a blatant opportunist with no genuine principles other than his own selfish concerns. He plays roles in front of the cameras and pays a lot of lip service to representing the poor and downtrodden but basically he has his cadres that dominate the country for his own ends. In many ways he is a lot like Mugabe with more to work with.

I would much rather see the parrot calling the shots there, Venezuela used to be such a nice country, good economic upside, a lot of really nice people, etc., but it is being driven down and will take a generation to recover from this fool.

I used to follow a Canadian company called Crystallex. They had the rights to gold mining at Las Cristinas in Venezuela. Chavez would repeatedly make statements both positive and negative regarding the company, and manipulate the stock price. He must have made billions playing this company over and over.

As a leader, he does not care at all about his people. It's all about Hugo Chavez. Want to learn about a despot, just watch Hugo Chavez.

He's a lunatic semi-dictator.

He doesn't seem very popular these days in Venezuela either.

Not a whole lot more to it than that other than that he's obsessed with the US and will work with anyone no matter how evil they are to piss us off.

Although it's possible that some of his paranoia and lunacy are an act.

I don't know much about this guy (or politics in general), but I support anybody who rolls up on the scene with a parrot. Props.

Or a flag cape!

A friend of mine is from Venezuela (he's a US citizen now) and he doesn't seem to care too much for Chavez.

My wife is from Peru and she worked with a guy from Venezuala. He doesn't like to talk about Chavez. Chavez is a self centered loon. He's taken a perfectly good country and turned it into Cuba 2.0. He's buddy/buddy with Castro.
