I'm in need of a gas credit card (yes, even in these times of obscene gas prices) and was enlisting the ES crowd to see what you all out there are carrying and why. (and yes mods I did check past threads and didn't see one specifically on this topic).

So:

Which gas credit cards are the best? Why are they the best? Which ones tout and follow thru with the best rewards programs? Also, I suppose there may be some cards for companies back East that aren't here on the West Coast, but all info much appreciated here. Thanks!

I use Shell and Texaco....sorry don't know about best,or if they are even in your area.

Same here. Had a Texaco card till they were bought by Shell. What I remember from back in my traveling by van Hippy days Shell stations were practically in every state, huge bonus IMO. Other than that I'm not really sure how well their card actually ranks compared to others.

This really depends on the type of reward you're looking to get. For cash back rewards, this card is the best

True Earnings® Card from Costco and American Express – The True Earnings® Card from Costco and American Express is the only credit card on the market today that offers a lat 3% cash back on all gasoline purchases (up to $3,000 in purchases per year). No tiers need to be met and no spending amount needs to be made in order to receive this cash back offer. And if you are a member of the Costco Warehouse Club, the card does not have an annual fee.

Added benefits of the True Earnings® Card from Costco and American Express is 3% cash back on all restaurant purchases, 2% cash back on travel and 1% cash back on everything else, including purchases made at Costco. With a 0% intro APR on purchases for six months AND a $25 statement credit after you make your first purchase, the True Earnings® Card from Costco and American Express is without a doubt, the best gas credit card

These days, the cards which are specifically for gas are generally not the best deal, especially since they tie you to just one company, and you might find gas cheaper somewhere else. If you have a Costco membership, for example, their gas is often cheapest around (for the stores that have a station).

Generally, I just use one of my rewards credit cards. There used to be really good ones that offered 5% on gas, groceries, and drugstores (and some still do at times, like the Chase Freedom that has quarterly categories), but those are long gone, generally.

The card I usually use these days is a 2% Visa (formerly Schwab, now just FIA), but that's not avaliable to new customers.

The best place to look, I've found, is the "What Credit Card Should I Get? FAQ" thread at Fatwallet Finance Forums, which has an updatable quick summary with the latest best deals.

Giant has this thing with Shell gas where you can save money on Gas. I think its get 100 points at Giant and receive $.10 cents off per gallon. I think $1 = 1 point. I just saved $.60 per gallon and only paid $3.05 per gallon for 93 octane. Regular cost before savings is $3.65. Its best to have an empty tank to take advantage of the savings.

You don't need a gas car either. When you go to the pump, just slide your Giant card or enter your phone number that's associated with your Giant card and it will deduct your points and tell you how much you are saving per gallon of gas. When you are at Giant, look at the bottom of your receipt and it will tell you how many points you have.
