What other young players do you want to see promoted to first string?

With Brandon Banks and Ryan Torain playing tug-of-war with my heart over who I have started to love as a great player more, who else do you want to see come out of nowhere and really impress?

Personally, Banks is starting to become my favorite. Extremely small guy, but very very fast and loves to be in every play he can be in. You can see it with how he runs, with how he looks as he goes off the field. He looks... I don't know, "ecstatic". We need more players like him that will do everything possible to get respect and admiration from the team's fans.

(Also, he is shorter and weighs less than me. I didn't know that was possible for an NFL pro.)

Hail.

Funny question that really shouldn't be answered. Unless you're just talking 'rah rah' stuff, "I liked this guy in college."

I mean, It doesn't matter who we think ought to be promoted. That's kind of the way things went around here for too long. If he did well somewhere else, he was automatically a starter here. Now, everyone gets a fair shot, which is why you see guys like brandon and ryan succeeding.

But I'm just being a buzzkill ;) So I'll say Selvish Capers. Because if he were starting material, it would show Shanny can find that in the late rounds. I would like to think we'd have figured him out by last year, though. Otherwise, things are pretty much how they should be, I would say. I expect a huge year from Ryan coming up. But I actually wouldn't be surprised if Brandon declined a bit. People gonna wise up to him on returns real quick.

Ordinarily, I defer to the coaches on issues relating to the depth chart. That is because, although I am curious to see how certain players will actually perform in regular season action, the coaches have much more information than I do with respect to the players' conditioning, talents, ability to play within a scheme, and knowledge of the playbook.

Still, from time to time, I see a player who is so spectacular that I think, "I don't care what the coaches say, this guy needs a lot more playing time." I don't see any back-up who needs to become a starter. Brandon Banks is a nice special teams player, but I don't know whether he'd be any good as a receiver. Jeremy Jarmon has vacillated between okay and invisible. Rob Jackson had one good game, but that's enough to make me think he should start over his competitors.

Jarmon

Austin

Capers or Cook(if we haven't upgraded our interior another way)

Riley

Bryant (if he's not already the starter...I'd say he is...and he's not too young I guess)

James Davis/Shawnbrey McNeal getting more touches.

All of this goes along with one massive caveat: that they EARN it.

How fast is McNeal?

Ooh, good call. I would want to keep Sellers around, though. He could make a good goal line lead blocker or goal line back.

The reason for suggesting it is because of how Young excelled on ST's this year with a few offensive appearances (scored a rec TD). Sellers is 35 and it's one position where we could get a lot younger!

I'd like to see Darrel Young replace Sellers. :D

Good call, I've been saying that as well....just forgot him.

How fast is McNeal?

Good question....I can't find anything under 4.4 or 4.5, but it seems that he's faster than that on the field.

Most thought he'd be the next Sproles in SD, that was the general feeling, before he was cut due to a numbers game at the end of training camp this year.

His scouting report:

NFL position: RB

Height: 5-10

Weight: 190

40 time: 4.55

Current projection: Fourth-round pick

Strengths: Shows excellent instincts, cutback vision and elusiveness, especially in the open field. Has outstanding speed, quickness, lateral agility, explosiveness, acceleration and gear change. Has soft hands and runs excellent routes out of the backfield and as a slot receiver. Adjusts well to the ball in the air and runs well after the catch. Has the skills to be a quality return man.

Weaknesses: Has an undersized frame with limited potential to develop into an every-down NFL running back. Played in a run-and-shoot college offense with a one-back formation. Has merely above-average strength on contact. Is a marginal pass blocker due to his lack of size, strength and effort. Had only one productive season in college. Has limited experience as a return man.

Bottom line: McNeal was SMU's starting running back for one year after transferring from Miami, where he had two undistinguished seasons. He is a strong third-down back prospect who ideally will serve in a "Reggie Bush" role. He deserves fourth-round consideration by a team like the Eagles, whose offense utilizes running backs in the passing game more than most teams.

I hope that Kevin Barnes is ready to step up to the next level and either be our starting CB or FS next year. He had a good showing at the end of the season at FS with hardly any reps.

He plays with passion and is a good hitter.

And he can't possibly be worse than Kareem Moore.

Sellers is so much of a beast that I cannot say that they should get rid of him. Young actually intrigues me as a power back. Either way, I think both will make the roster because of teams if nothing else.

As for the origional question, it finally seems like there is some legitimate young talent on the roster to get excited about.

Jarmon

Jackson

Williams

Austin

Torain

Young

Capers

Riley

Banks

Cook

Armstrong (still relatively young)

Gano (had a down year, but if he can get over his problems kicking in the rain will be a good kicker)

I expect for 3-5 of those names to not make it through camp, but the ones that do all have the talent to be productive at the NFL level.

Whoever earns it and is the best at that position out of training camp and pre-season. They start. Open competition everywhere other than LaRon at strong and London in the middle.

I disagree. I think you have open competition everywhere, with no exceptions, until its obvious who the winner is. Then they get all starter's reps.

Sellers is almost as bad as ladell betts was at short yardage runs!

He did however return to form with his run blocking this year.
