Burgold
On Wednesday, I dug myself out, shoveled my neighbor's free and then made it down to my parent's home to dig them a path. All this reminded me that my back is not as young as the rest of me. My reward for doing this was the power failing. For the last two days, I've been living by candle light, wrapped in layers and blankets and livin' in the 19th Century. The Street is quite beautiful. Bedtime's around eight. Wake time is when the sun catches your attention. My cellphone has been very carefully used and obviously no internet or computer time. Today, I've made it to a Borders to reconnect with the world and feed my addicitions (as well as do business), but it's actually been kind of nice living without electricity... eating the cold meals, catching up on reading, chatting with neighbors. Hope everyone else has fared the storm well.
Dan T.
There is a certain calm that comes with living by candlelight, warmed only by a woodstove. One thing that I caught myself doing over and over. Each time I would move from room to room, I would - out of habit - reach up to flip the light switch. Must have done it 4 or 5 times. Truly  moments.

Kosher Ham
All this reminded me that my back is not as young as the rest of me. I would never tell any female that part. So you live 2 doors down from your folks ? It's in the 50's here and even when it does snow (knock on wood) I have never lost power (Nor DirecTV). That must be a pain in the rear. Why not charge your cell in the car ? Borders has computers now ? If not you could have charged your laptop as well. I do agree that simple living sometimes is pretty nice though. No TV, Net, etc. Just sitting back reading a book or relaxing/talking with family.
LD0506
Kinda refreshing to see someone appreciating the peace and simplicity of it instead of just ****in' up a storm.
sideshow24
Why don't you have backup heat/cooking/something to charge your phone battery? Charge the phone with your car if nothing else.

I think the infrastructure is getting old and needs to be replaced and the utility isn't going to do that until it absolutely has no other option. I guess that's a side reason why I think not all things should be handled privately. Pepco is patching its system with spit and duct tape it seems over the last few years and keep acting surprised when it breaks down. A little storm like this should not have put 3-400,000 people out of power.
