Deputies: Burglars tasted, snorted human and canine ashes

Three young men have been arrested in connection with a Silver Springs Shores burglary last month in which the remains of a woman's father and the ashes of her two pet great Danes were stolen.

During the Dec. 15 break-in, the burglars also took about $1,500 worth of jewelry, a laptop, a DVD player and a 42-inch flat-screen TV.

On Tuesday, Marion County sheriff's detectives arrested David Diaz, 19; Waldo Soroa, 19; and Matrix Andaluz, 18, on charges of burglary and three counts of grand theft, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Two 17-year-old boys were arrested in connection with a separate attempted break-in and tampering with evidence, which occurred Friday.

One of them is accused of dealing in stolen property after detectives say he sold the laptop taken from the Shores home for $30.

Adding two odd twists to the story, detectives say the burglars told them they thought the containers they stole contained crushed pills and began tasting and snorting them.

When they saw an article in the Star-Banner, they realized those were the remains of the canines.
