House Democrats defy Obama on tax cut bill

(CNN) - Defying President Obama, House Democrats voted Thursday not to bring up the tax package that he negotiated with Republicans in its current form.

"This message today is very simple: That in the form that it was negotiated, it is not acceptable to the House Democratic caucus. It's as simple as that," said Democratic Congressman Chris Van Hollen.

"We will continue to try and work with the White House and our Republican colleagues to try and make sure we do something right for the economy and right for jobs, and a balanced package as we go forward," he said.

The vote comes a day after Vice President Biden made clear to House Democrats behind closed doors that the deal would unravel if any changes were made.

"Wow did the [White House] mishandle this," a senior House Democratic Source told CNN.

"Breathtaking. Members have major substantive concerns and they should have gently guided people to the finish line."

I like how politicians of all stripes in the US use the same ridiculous explanations for things. "mishandled" being one of my favorites. If you disagree with anything it isn't that you disagree... it's that it was mishandled. As if the thing wasn't presented to you on the right paper or mailed a day late. People can't just say "i don't support parts x and y of this bill"

Sadly what they are really saying is "I wasn't offered enough in exchange for my vote"

I think in this context, with respect to the White House, it was mishandled. To "negotiate" an agreement w/o making sure that the people that are supposed to on your a side agree with it to the extent that they will pass it is a serious mishandling of the issue.

I'm not sure what those Dems expect the President to do. They don't have the votes and the GOP have proven time and time again that they will play politics over doing what is right for the people of this country. A lot of the change has happened because The People want the government to get **** done. They might have voted in the wrong people to do it, but that's generally the message when you "vote the bums out".

Last I checked, it's not the White House's job to negotiate with Congress, on behalf of people who are in Congress.

All the White House has the authority to say is "If the bill looks like this, I'll sign it."

IMO, Congress is supposed to at least be able to negotiate with itself, without adult supervision.

Man o Man it is a good thing for the country that the elected Democrats don't "play politics"

Here is what the Dems need to do.

Scratch this bill.

re-introduce the bill that passed before (All tax cuts stay the same except those that made more then 1 million).

Let the senate fillibuster.

And not a threat of a fillibuster - but a ACTUAL fillibuster. Make them sit there thru Xmas, new years, etc..... C-span showing during the holidays republicans fillibusting in the senate to keep a bill that will give a "tax cut" to all americans making less the 1 million a year. White house can release pictures of Obama sitting at his desk waiting for the bill to sign it.

Call the Republicans bluff.

I would LOVE to see the republicans do a fillibuster to avoid a tax increase on everyone american except those making more then 1 million. And if they do it, Dems just showed them for what they are. And then there is NOTHING stopping you on Jan 2nd to then do the same damn compermise.

Last I checked, politicians aren't supposed to be corrupt, Republicans aren't supposed to run up the deficit, and Democrats aren't supposed to constantly shoot themselves in the foot.

Reality, on the other hand, has a much different opinion.

That darned party of NO!

seriously, this is a good thing. The bill amounted to nothing more than another stimulus under a different name to trick the idiot masses.

Yes...so when the fed starts QE3 and Congress serves up a different flavored stimulus as a result.... what?

And if the White House had done ONLY that, then this wouldn't be an issue.

BUT if you are going to enter into a negotiation (which the White House did with some of the people in Congress), you better make sure what you decide is okay with the people that are supposed to be on your side.

Well, it appears that the Democrats are the party of fiscal responsibility after all. The Republicans and Tea Party vote for increased spending and tax cuts once again and the Dems try to block it. Strangely, all the supposed fiscal conservatives on this board minus one seem to be lambasting the Dems for this and perfectly happy with the Republicans and Tea Party/Obama compromise.

It takes me back to those years when a "tax and spend liberal" was the worst thing you could possibly be. Well, it seems now there is something called a "cut tax and spend more conservative" which is apparently awesome.

So now Obama's a "cut tax and spend more conservative"?

I don't have a huge problem with the budget if it's called what it really is a "stimulus package." From what I've read we could do worse from the stimulus predicted effectivenes.

From a responsible buget side, it took the worst of both sides while scrapping the best all in the name of compromise. Last week unemployment couldn't be extended without balancing the costs with offsets. Now we will pass the unemployment extension + a lowering of tax revenue...with many of the same people supporting it. Wow. I wonder if any worry about the flip flop ads of future elections?

From a presidential stand point, does anyone else think this works very much in Obama's longer term favor? Here he is visibly to the right of much of the Dem party. Heck he even has some Republicans saying this was a good deal with him. Is it harder to pigeon hole him as a socialist liberal today than last week? I think so. In some ways I almost see this as the beginning of a reelection campaign, and I think (s)he who captures the center gets a 4 year stay in the White House.
