Coaching Changes- One week to Black Monday

Well, one week until Black Monday. I've edited my original 2010 coaching changes post.

4 coaches got the ax, possible several more changes.

Boys: Early on looked like Jason Garrett was going to get the job, now I'm not sure, If Jeff Fisher is free, I look for him to be top on Jerry's list if he doesn't keep Jason.

Vikings: I still think Leslie Frazier will get the job but maybe the owner wants someone with a higher profile.

Broncos: McDaniels is gone. No clue who Denver will bring in.

49ers: Well, Singletary is gone. Maybe a Jon Gruden and Donavan Mcnabb marriage here???

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

These 2 coaches contracts expire.

Bengals: Marvin Lewis's contract is up, doubtful he gets a renewal but it's still possible.

Panthers: Fox is gone. Hope Russ Grimm gets this job.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Other potential changes:

Chargers: Well, they aren't going to the playoffs; has Norv finally run out of his lives?

.

Packers: If they miss the playoffs Mccarthy could be gone.

Browns: Mangini is done.

Giants: If they miss the playoffs, Coughlin is probably gone.

Dolphins: 1-7 home record and Parcells leaving, means Sparano is gone.

Texans: Despite a contract extension Kubiak is probably gone. Cowher or if available, Fisher are possibilities.

Titans: I see Jeff Fisher departing the Titans but he won't be unemployed for long.

Jaguars: Jack Del Rio's time maybe finally up if they miss the playoffs.

I thought 2011 lockout potential would keep the changes to a minimum but maybe not.

I don't think Frazier is a lock for the job, the Vikings owner isn't likely to just hand it to him without looking at options. He tends to allow coaches a LOT of time to see if they're any good, but he's also pretty thorough in the hiring process. So, this is a great resume builder for Frazier, but it may not be enough to win him the job, if the owner likes another candidate more.

I agree that Garrett definitely stays in Dallas, Lewis is out in Cincy, Fox is out in Carolina, and Kubiak is out in Houston.

Cowher goes to Carolina if he comes back to coaching at all. That's the job he's wanted the entire time he's been out of the NFL, and I think he's waited for it to open, since it's down the street from his home.

I think the 49ers fire Singletary, but I'm not positive on that one.

I actually think the Lions, Titans, and Giants keep their HCs. If Norv is out of San Diego, than AJ Smith might be out as well, since that was his "hand picked" coach after giving Marty the boot. If Smith stays, I have no clue who they might hire (McDaniels?).

Denver, I believe has a better chance of hiring a decent HC because they're not so far removed from being a decent team, and they don't have a domineering GM (unlike San Diego), so I think someone like Gruden would be very tempted to head there, unless the Miami job is open, which I agree might happen. In Parcell's exit conference, it sounded a lot more like they'd asked him to leave than that he was ready to retire for the 30th time. I think Sparano might be gone.

Mangini I'm not so positive on, yes the Browns are playing better, but who is that due to? Did they suddenly gel and become a dangerous team, or did Holmgren put his hands on things and begin running the on field product behind the scenes? I guess we'll know at the end of the season when Mangini is fired or kept.

I also agree with Warhead, Cable might be out in Oakland as well.

If all this occurs, that's a TON of HC spots to fill up, so teams may be scrambling to find a legitimate candidate. I think a couple HCs will be hired by other teams immediately, Fox might be one of them in a place that doesn't want an in your face type of coach who would demand GM duties, like Oakland, Cincy, Detroit. There haven't been a ton of younger prospects that we've heard about, so that will be interesting.

Next season it should be really exciting to watch some of these new HCs take over their teams.

I doubt if the Texans fire Kubiak. They just extended him. Texans are still in the thick of things in the AFC South. But Mike S. could be gone after the season.

How long ago did they extend Kubiak? Might not matter anyway, Childress was extended last season, I believe. I think the Texans have underperformed in a week division this season. They've been awful and they were expected to be a playoff team.

  • 3 weeks later...
Packers: If they miss the playoffs Mccarthy could be gone.

:ols: highly doubtful. Considering all the injuries we've been through, its a miracle we've played as well as we have. Two losses in overtime and not a single loss of more than 4 points. #2 team in points allowed and #2 in net points. I don't see him being anywhere near the hot seat.

Yeah, there's no way McCarthy is going anywhere. Like PP said the Packers have been decimated by injuries, yet they still control their own destiny for the playoffs. There's no chance Ted Thompson is dumb enough to get rid of a good coach in McCarthy.

My predictions are:

Houston-Kubiak out, Cowher in. There's no way Kubiak stays after this 4 game losing streak, and with the way his team has been nothing more than average the last 2 years.

NY Giants-Coughlin out, John Fox in.

Also, I believe Marty Mornhinweg will be a head coach in a few weeks. I believe he could end up with one of the teams that loses out on Gruden, out of Miami, Cleveland, or SF.

Cincy-Lewis out, Zimmer in? I know the defense has struggled, but I think Zimmer is still given a shot.

SD-Norv's time is up, maybe a guy like Martz becomes the head coach to run the offense?

Dallas-I believe Garrett stays as head coach, unless Fisher is fired from Tennessee, which I don't think Adams will get rid of him.

Cleveland-Mangini out, Gruden reunites with Holmgren.

Miami-Soparano out, another possible Gruden sighting.

SF-The final place I could see Gruden ending up, but I think this is the least desirable place because of their FO and offensive problems.

Jacksonville-Del Rio lost his job yesterday. No idea for next head coach.

Carolina-Fox leaves for NY, and hopefully Russ Grimm his hired as their head coach.

I also believe Marty Mornhinweg will become a head coach in a matter of weeks. I believe he could go to one of the teams I mentioned above who don't get Gruden.

Whatever happens, here are two names we'll want to keep and eye on: Marty Morninwheg and Brad Childress. One will be an HC, the other an OC, hopefully not on the same teams. B/c those will be the 2 primary targets to send McNabb...most likely

del rio is garbage. coughlin should have been fired last year. norv, hell i dont even know how hes kept a job this long. fisher and his mustache are severly overated, as is cowher for that matter. gruden sucks IMO, luckiest HC of all time. lewis has accomplished nothing. mcdaniels is a bonafide idiot. singletary, loved him as a player but a complete failure as HC. coaching in this league is subpar by historic standards

Spanos has already said that Norv will be back next year.

Dallas-I believe Garrett stays as head coach, unless Fisher is fired from Tennessee, which I don't think Adams will get rid of him.

It depends on how much blame Jerry gives Garrett for the current situation. I think he will get a full season next year to prove himself.

Cleveland-Mangini out, Gruden reunites with Holmgren.

Not sure why Holmgren would chose to keep the guy for a season then dump him, but it is certainly plausable.

SF-The final place I could see Gruden ending up, but I think this is the least desirable place because of their FO and offensive problems.

They plan on addressing the FO situation with a name candidate, so I don't think that will be much of an issue.

There are a lot of terrible, super-bowl winning coaches in there...

Garrett get's the gig in Dallas.

Jerruh didn't put an OC on such a ridiculous contract for nothing.

And I can't see the Packers or Titans changing. GB's battled through a **** load of injury's and still remained serious competition. He's building something there that could well see the Packers being the major NFC team for a few years, Fisher get's to decide when he leaves TN. That jusrt is what it is.

Hail.

I'd thought I'd put this here, since it might be an interesting theory about Cable's job with the Raiders:

http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/Al-Davis-must-determine-Raiders-coaching-future-quickly-73211221

Second is the rise in stock of offensive coordinator Hue Jackson. If Davis has designs on turning over the reins to Jackson, he might be forced to act before other teams show interest in Jackson, and that could be even sooner than Jan. 18.

Jackson already has been mentioned as a candidate for the Denver Broncos' head coaching job held by interim coach Eric Studesville. The Broncos are one of a handful of teams that will be seeking new coaches once the regular season ends Sunday.

So, if Cable is fired, it might be just to give the job to Jackson so that they can retain him.

I agree with most of these but for some reason I think that they will keep Norv Turner even though he still hasn't made the team any better than when Schottenheimer was there. The reason they will keep him is because AJ Smith gets along with him even if Norv has continually to have slow starts with late surges to make the playoffs. Everyone defends Norv like he is some great HC but in reality is only a really good OC. Norv Turner will never win a Super Bowl as a HC because he lacks motivational and organizational skills to be a successful HC. His record shows that even with his record at San Diego. So although many think he is on thin ice I for believe that San Diego will keep him despite his slow starts two years in a row. Marty Schottenheimer was fired because he ddn't win a playoff game, went 14-2 and had a conflict with AJ Smith while Norv Turner won one playoff game, is well liked by AJ Smith, has had slow starts two years in a row and has a declining record every year he has been HC. That is Norv Turners MO. Wow the organization, win with the previous coaches players and make the team worst every year he is HC. At any other team he would be shown the door already. San Diego is dumb if they keep him as HC.

Course, you missed that Spanos has already said that Smith and Turner are returning.
