Have you ever attended a college bowl game? *Detroit Bound - 12/26!*

If so, which bowl and what was your experience like? Did you get a package with the school that you supported or did you go with your own group? Any tips or recommendations?

I'm asking because my school is bowl bound for the first time in its short football history. We could know as early as Saturday where we are headed, and 2 of our 3 most likely destinations a lot of us are planning on going to. The school is working on packages, but I just wanted to get any idea from any of you that have been there and done that.

Thanks!

I've been to the Peach Bowl and the Gator Bowl, both when Maryland was playing and I had a great time. It could have had something to do with both games being a blow out in Maryland's favor but the atmosphere itself was awesome. I am assuming your school is FIU. They won't being going to any big bowls but hopefully they go to a bowl game that is in a really cool city. But, even if not, I'm sure you'll have a great time rooting on your team.

I simply bout tickets to the Bowl games since I wasn't in college yet but I would recommend getting a package deal from the school and going with other students. I wish my school had the chance to go to a bowl game but Towson isn't even D1 or even good enough to get multiple wins!

This year I plan on going to a Maryland bowl game since I'll have the money. Looks like they'll be going to Orlando (please...) which would be awesome to play possibly Notre Dame or the Military Bowl in DC, which goes to the 8th place ACC team. I'd rather travel to Florida :D

Went to the Virginia Tech-Auburn Sugar Bowl in January 2005

My friends have gone to the 2008, and 2009 Orange Bowls and the 2009 Chik Fil a Bowl

Here is the system that we have heading into this year's bowl season

1) Secure your flight early. I.E as soon as you know where the game is. If you can drive even better

2) Find a vacation rental on craigslist. Much better deals

3) Have the balls to show up at the game without a ticket, even if it is sold out. There are plenty of people who will buy with the hopes of scalping, but realize that everyone who is at the stadium already has a ticket. You will have no problem getting a very cheap deal

And DO NOT buy the school packages. Over priced, bad seats, you won't enjoy it.

I went to the Rose Bowl January 1, 1988 to see MSU beat USC 20-17. That was a good graduation present.

We camped out on the parade route the night before and woke up to the parade going by.

Overall a very cool experience, and the crowd at the game was very laid back. There appeared to be more MSU fans which was fun.

I went to the emerald bowl in San Fran in 2006. MD vs Orgean state. Because it was in San Fran it was 95% Orgean State fans, about 3% MD fans, and rest local. It was played at AT&T Park , which is a Baseball field that doesnt convert well. Both teams were on the same side of the field for instance.

I got tickets from the school - so we sat with other MD fans.

MD lost, game was slow, it rained a little bit, the stadium was not a football stadium and......

It was the funniest college football game I had been to!

They really are fun! Go!

Right now, everyone is predicting us to end up in New Orleans. If we beat Middle Tennessee State on Saturday it's all but guaranteed. Their committee will be in attendance for that game....should be exciting. If all goes to hell, and the bowl gods hate us, we'd end up losing Saturday and somehow ending up in Detroit (the one bowl game none of us want to go to).

The only reason why I'd want to do a school package is simply for driving up (13 hours) or flying with other students and staying at a "student" hotel.

Hopefully driving. It'll be the cheapest for all of us. A vacation rental is a great idea....

I definitely don't want to end up with ****ty seats. I'm used to sitting first row in the end zone :ols:

That looks like an awesome time. I'm not too hyped for the game, just the experience surrounding it.

I went to the St. Petersburg bowl last year. It was UCF v. Rutgers and it was ok. They played in "the trop", but that place sucks for baseball and football, lol. Plus, UCF got their butts handed to them. I am sure if you went to NO, that would fun. It depends on the city I guess.

I went to the 1993 Orange Bowl & I loved it. But I wouldn't go if I didn't have a team to root for because they are too many Bowl games now & the Bowl System needs to be replaced with a playoff system & the only way that will happen is if the fans stop going to & stop watching the Bowl Games.

Never been, but always wanted to. I've heard a bunch of stories about the '92 Peach Bowl when the Pirates beat NC State. When Fischer scored that last touchdown, they say the sound in Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium could rival a jet engine taking off.

I'll get around to it someday.

Yep.

Went with my ex's family to the Gator Bowl (Iowa-SCar, her dad was an Iowa grad) and the Orange Bowl (VT-Cinci) two years ago.

Drove from NoVa to Tampa to Miami and back, which was way too much driving but I still had a great experience. We had ****ty seats and the stadium was totally empty pretty much, there were even Florida fans that were there a week early to scope out the stadium (Florida played OSU in the MNC that year, I'm pretty sure). Got the seats from VT, which were outrageously overpriced. There were literally people giving tickets away outside the game. We moved down to the players family's section near the end of the game and got to talk to a bunch of guys after the game (Macho, Kam Chancellor, Dustin Keys etc) and it was a good time.

Its worth going, usually the games are in good locations and hopefully people show up to the game.

I went to the Champs Sports Bowl in Orlando in 2008. Wisconsin vs FSU.

My family lives in Orlando already, and my dad's a Wisconsin alum while my older brother did grad school at FSU and I did my undergrad there, so it was a fun family experience, nothing too crazy to describe.

FSU stomped Wisconsin 42 to 13, Graham Gano was the bowl game MVP by taking over punting duties and landing his first three punts within Wisconsin's 3 yard line, and Scott Stapp sang the national anthem after getting booed by the stadium just for being Scott Stapp.

That Orange Bowl. Unfortunately due to circumstances I was unable to go. However my group of friends paid 15 dollars for club seats. The whole deal was, the Florida and Oklahoma fans were forced to buy tickets to that game as well as the MNC game which provided that huge surplus of tix.

I actually learned the lesson at the Sugar Bowl in Jan of 2005 when we played Auburn. We bought 300 dollar tickets to sit in the lower bowl (my buddies and I had free housing with my cousin who was in med school there) and then when we got to the stadium, even though it was sold out, people scalping were pretty much giving away tickets. Could have snagged my seat for 40 dollars. This for a sold out BCS game vs an SEC opponent in SEC territory.

Lesson learned. Buy your tickets at the game

  • 2 weeks later...

I know I'm a little late, but in spite of a special sign and a personal plea to New Orleans Bowl committee members, my school is headed to Detroit. FIU will take on Toledo on 12/26.

The school chartered a 172 seat plane, and packages were $500 a piece. There was no way in hell I could afford that. To make a long story short, the school sponsored a few students through donations to go on the trip. I was one of them....I'm heading to our campus later today to get details :)
