Kindle or Nook?

Forehead

I thought there was a thread on this before, but I couldn't find it in searches. My wife is angling for one of these for Christmas. I know Kindle is up to the Kindle 3 by this point, I don't know what version the nook is up to. Have experience with either one? Which do you recommend, etc.?

We were given a Kindle last year as a gift. My college daughter immediately took it but quickly disregarded it. She prefers paper books. I've downloaded a little onto it but I just don't find it more compelling than a book. Maybe if I commuted on the train or plane and wanted to have access to multiple books I'd use it, but it lies idle.

I have no idea, but I just came up with a great TV ad.

The scene opens with a little kid sitting in a log cabin, with a Lincoln-style stovepipe hat on.

His back is to us and there is a faint glow outlining him, coming from the small wooden table at which he is seated.

As the camera pans slowly around to show him from the front, we see he's reading from a kindle.

Narrator: "I'll bet Lincoln wishes he could have read his school books by kindle light."

ipad is the answer

Only if you don't get eyestrain and you want to trade battery life for additional functionality.

I have a Sony Reader and it is really handy for those long trips. I also don't have to worry about charging the thing for a couple of weeks. (handy when you don't have power readily available.

I was worried about the eye strain with the Ipad, but honestly with the adjustments they allow and different types of faux paper yup can pick it turned out to never be an issue for me. Battery life is about 8-10 hours reading. For me a once a day charge up is worth having your ereader and Internet device in the same body.

The biggest drawback I can see for the Ipad is reading in bright sunlight conditions. The epaper readers win out for sure at the beach.

iPad. I have the Kindle app on it and have downloaded a couple of books including childrens' books for the kids. As HOF44 mentions, there are options to adjust background types and font size, and battery life on the iPad is phenomenal (especially when on wifi). Plus, the other app's such as iPod, Netflix, having the internetz at constant disposal, email, etc plus educational app's for the kiddos have made it a very popular tool for us. Worth every penny IMO.

My daughter has a nook.

I watched it take a small tumble from an end table to the floor. In a heavy case btw.

Screen cracked.

I bought the warranty, which gives her 1 replacement nook, which we got. Hope it doesn't fall again. They are pretty fragile.

Meanwhile, I have dropped my Sony a few times and it is still ticking.

Tablet is definitely the way to go here, but I don't like buying first run items. I'm waiting for the 2nd gen Ipad, or a tablet with a tablet ready version of Android before I dive in. Looking forward to it though, I think tablets are the new wave as computers get more powerful and more handheld.

If she is a serious reader and will be reading for more than 1 hour at a time than 10000000000000000% Kindle. There is zero question. If she is a casual reader, and is intreasted in magazines more than books and wants color magazine pictures than go with the Ipad.

The screen technology that the Kindle uses is far superior for reading than the Ipad. Just pick it up and look at it. It is pretty amazing. It really feels like you are reading pages right out of a book unlike the Ipoad. Because it uses E-ink it is much easier on the eyes and allows for long term reading.

The Kindle is also incredibly light. Feels almost fake. Again, making reading for several hours at a time extremely easy.

So to me, it depends on what you are looking for -

Reading 1+ hours per day, mostly novels - Kindle

Reading under 1 hour per day, mostly web/magazines - Ipad.

I think this is way overblown. If you set the Ipad to a glossy paper with high brightness high you will get eyestrain. But it is easily avoidable by changing the settings.

To me the Ipad is the way to go unless budgetary constraints won't let you. After the Ipad I would go Kindle, then Nook.

I guess it comes down to preference. I personally feel like i am reading a book when holding a Kindel. The e-ink technology + light weight just makes me feel like I am holding a book. An Ipad I feel like i am holding a computer and reading a book off of it.

Again, I think it really depends on the user. I can totally understand using the Ipad.

This. The Kindle is superb if you read for hours on end like I do. I love mine.

I may also get an iPad, but for different things. I look at an LCD screen enough at work. My eyes need a break.
