WP: Perry Riley: "I feel terrible for the situation"

No doubt that the penalty stung, and frankly he should feel badly. However, I hope he doesn't dwell too long on feeling badly. Instead, he should take this opportunity to learn from it and make sure that it doesn't happen again.

Also, people pinning the loss on him are not looking big picture at the whole game. If Santana hadn't tipped up a ball that he should have caught, that block-in-the-back penalty wouldn't have been a big deal or never would have happened. Many things could have changed the outcome of this game.

A tough break for the kid. It's easier to forgive that type of block then some obvious holding penalty 5 yards from the play. At least he was being aggressive (overly) on the play instead of standing by watching his guy put a hit on Banks to cause a fumble.

Tons of negatives he could have done on the play. I just think this wasn't that bad. Dude was trying. That's all I can ask. Hell, he made a mistake and feels like dog doo-doo. Wish the rest of these guys felt this bad about their crappy play.

maybe im alone here but i didnt think it was a block in the back at all. it happened right underneath me at the stadium, i saw the replay on a 100 ft TV screen, he hit the dude in the shoulder. this was a bogus call.

the kid is a potential future LB for this team, one questionable block in the back is taking a lot of you over the edge.

what some of you should be over the edge about is why are vets like moss and cooley dropping easy passes, why our oline was juggled again today, why carlos rogers thought he was a missile today, and why rocky mcintosh decided tackling is overrated. there were a lot of issues today with this team, a rookie getting flagged on a crappy call is not one of them.

Pretty much agree with everything said here

BLC, I agree with the point of your post. I think they drafted Riley to eventually be a starting LB on this team and I'd love for this little mishap to eventually be a footnote in his career. I do disagree about the call itself though...despite the fact that it did not impact the play, it was the right call as he clearly blocked the Viking player in the nameplate/numbers. Too bad too since, as I mentioned, Banks was a couple yards past that would-be tackler when the illegal block was made.

well, i think what people are mostly mad about is that we lost the game today, but they are also mad about why we lost the game. because of this one penalty. honestly, i dont think that was a block in the back. that was dumb.

Annoyed at him, yes...but I'm more mad that the game hinged on that play. IMO, it shouldn't have come to that.

We put a nice 83 yard opening TD drive together to start the game and what happens after that? Precisely jack ****. I was hoping that this might be the game where we...oh...I don't know...score more than 30 points?

Wait...you're allowed to score over 30? From watching our Redskins over the past few years, I thought you had to try to win with as few points as possible.

Can anyone tell me how much time was left in the game, when the Return was called back?

Thanks, in advance! :) Just disputing a few things with a Vikings fan.. He also believes that Fletcher shouldve been called on a PI, on the deep pass to Shianco.. I don't remember that even being close to a PI, however.. The other complaint, of his, was us calling a timeout and then saying "nevermind".. hmm.. I must've been getting a beer, during that one. ha.

Sucks that we lost.. :( My family was hyped up, slapping fives & celebrating, when Banks broke that return. Then came the flag.. What a buzzkill.. I thought this happened towards the end of the game. However, my Vikings fan friend tells me there was still 10 minutes left in the game?

Riley actually didn't commit the first block in the back penalty. The first one was Fred Davis. Riley laid off his guy. He was right in the same area as Davis, who did marginally block his guy in the back. The ref had both straightlined Davis and Riley in his field of view, and mistakenly called it on 56 instead of 86. On the replay, the color guy actually circled the Davis block with the Telestrater, while Riley clearly avoided contact with his guy.

So he was guilty of one illegal block in the back, not two.

It just sucked because I was waiting for the flag, and then they said no flags, so I was really enjoying the John Wall Dance.

Oh well, we have line issues on both sides of the ball, and we don't have enough play-makers. We aren't going anywhere anyway, but it would have been nice to finally beat Favre.

Perry Riley didn't drop all those balls, or let the Vikes running game push us around. I hate getting run on, it just destroys me.

I think you all are being too hard on the kid. The guy made a penalty on one play and it happens. The criticism he is receiving is not going to help him out at all either. It seems most Punt/Kick returns have penalties, this one seems to be his turn. To want to cut him seems kind of ridiculous. Its one play, a very bad one for him but there was still how many plays the skin's couldn't make to get back in the game or to make this play no matter?

Yeah I don't think the dude should be cut over that one play. If you want to look at single plays that cost us the game, Moss letting a pass bounce off his hands/chest leading to the INT was just as much responsible for the final score.

Also, the call was sort of weak. I absolutely loathe when the officials throw flags for plays that have no bearing on the play. Unless it is a personal foul of course.

Plus how come on the Vikings punt return from earlier, we see our guy get held all the way down the sideline and no flag thron, brandon banks take a facemask, no call......

Today was a bad day for missed calls that seemed pretty obvious.

Those were two VERY visible fouls with no call. Very frustrating. As was the crappy spiking delay of game call on Armstrong. The ****ing ref could very easily have left his flag in his pocket on that one.

Yeah I'm not trying to blame the officials, cause our team played pretty weak, but some of the missed calls just looked rather obvious. Oh yeah and Moss getting mugged on that 3rd down play, where they kept showing Cooley yelling at the ref. How was that not frickin' obvious. You can bump the WR within 5 yards, but not grab a hold of them and bear hug them.....WTF?

While I'm going to have nightmares about this play all week, I'm sure the guy feels absolutely terrible.

I've made mental mistakes and completely ****ed up a play or two in my college sport. While it was never this highly scrutinized and I didn't have an emotional fan base calling for my head, there is definitely nothing anyone could say to me that could have made me feel any more worse than what I was already doing to myself in my own head. I'm sure this is the same case with him and he's sick over this.

While extremely frustrating, people, particularly younger players are going to make mistakes like this. All I can hope for is that he learns from it and it makes him a better player.

EDIT: At least Riley actually feels badly about this and knows he screwed up...unlike one certain Bills WR...

IIRC, that was Brandon Banks...they were trying a quick WR screen to him. Another bad no call.
