KingGibbs
How about that defense yesterday folks? You had to love the way they clamped down in the second half. I don't care how many yards they give up, but holding an offense to 13 points when they are averaging over 26 for the season. Love how the defense is on the same page, each individual understands their responsibility and their physicality shows on the opposing teams sidelines when the trainers are attending to multiple injuries every week. Loved how Orakpo said they don't care about the stats. The bottomline is keeping them out of the endzone. A few of us have been saying that this defense would take time to gel and they are showing signs of doing just that. I don't want to say that this will be the case every week, but with each passing week this defense is gaining more and more confidence. It must kill a a few people on here that they can't ***** and moan about the defense. They are the ones that won this game yesterday.

zoony
No, the lecture this week was about how we got lucky and Mike McCarthy lost, respectively. I think we're getting better, but I fully expect some more rough patches. This team has shown enough on offense, defense, and special teams at this point... now we just need to pin down that consistency thing

Some of these people need to be ***** slapped. The great thing about this team (so far) is that they are still learning the nuances of the new systems and are winning along the way while doing so. Thiebear
I go with the apologist: We have played 4 good teams and Dallas. Our Defense is doing okay based on the schedule: Next week is going to be tough also. We are almost tied for the amount of wins last year on week 5... skinsfan1523
I don't think it "kills" any real redskins fan to have to admit they were wrong about the defense, but they did have some good points. I was/am one of the people that say be patient and give them time to understand the system, and not to expect perfection out of the gate. Are there still problems? yes, but they are getting teams off the field, and generating turnovers and that is all that counts. We may not be the pittsburgh steelers yet, but we are getting better every week. We still will have rough games, I'm pretty sure about that. I agree with all of your points, but one cannot deny that holding the Eagles and Packers to a total of 23 points is more then impressive. You can tell that the players are reacting more and not thinking so much and that's been the difference the last two weeks.

Burgold
We allowed close to 500 yards again and we're giving up the easiest of passes. Thankfully, in the fourth quarter and overtime we stiffened up, but that was not brilliant defense. I want to see more punts. I want to see some three and outs. They succeeded on the scoreboard which counts most, but that was far from a dominating defensive effort.

They had plenty of 3 and outs in the second half, GB was 2-15 on 3rd downs, we held them to zero points from a 2nd and goal from the 1, had 4 sacks, had two takeaways and allowed only 13 points (while struggling to hold the ball on offense) to one of the highest scoring teams in the league. What more do you want? Who cares about yards? I disagree, they started slow but they dominated the packers physically all day and dominated the game all second half and overtime. Dude it not apply to anyone that we still get owned when the other team passes the ball? Yes, we have gotten better stopping the run, but the pass defense is not where it should be. Part of the problem is, we have no FS and CB. D Hall is probably the decent corner on our team. Rogers is clearly not good for forcing turnovers. Lets count how many times in his career the ball has came his way and he still can't get the pick. I think you would eventually run out of fingers if you went back on most bad plays and looked it it. A good FS, should easily be able to catch the sloppy passes that get deflected off someones hand and land in the back. Sean Taylor did all this when he was FS. Our best bet was signing Eric Berry, but we let him go to Kansas. As for Laron Landry, he is good at SS. He applies the pressure to the QB and forced him to make a bad decision. If we had a nastier D-Line, we could open up more holes and run insane blitz. But that won't come for another year or two because the O-Line and secondary half to be addressed first. GB could not convert on 3rd down. Key stops in the 4th Q to allow the offense to get that tying FG. I think people should be pretty happy, even if it's far from perfect. I think they were pretty close to dominant in the fourth and certainly in overtime... though we were a hairsbreadth away from losing with that 52 yarder at the end of regulation. Actually, looking back at the stats, we forced six punts (including the two overtime ones... so, we forced one punt per quarter). I guess that's not bad. I will agree with that, but as for the secondary, I won't be impressed until we release Rogers and draft a good FS. The defensive line is decent enough for this 3-4. We need interceptions so that we won't have to play this trying to score with 2 minutes left on the clock. Problem is we can never shut down the passing game, so the other team is always able to score. That normally puts us in the situations where we have to score for the win or tie for the field goal. If we had freakish corners that could play the ball better, we could make an interception and just run the clock down with runs plays. Prime good example of what I mean, is tipping the ball and making the interception. Look at how many times, other teams have tipped the ball and gotten the interception. Redskin can't seem to do that. Let's also look at how many times, other team's CB's have snuck infront of a receiver, picked the ball and ran it all the way back for the TD. The last time I saw Carlos Rogers do this was back in 2005-2006 when we punished Detriot at FedEx. I think the score was something like 30+ to their 6. If Rogers, Hall, or Buchanon could do this, more, we could be in business.
Thinking Skins
Any time a new coach has to install an entirely new scheme, its all about learning that scheme and adjusting that scheme to the players he has. I think this entire year is a growing process. Its nice to get some wins in the process, but to think this is important not to think we're as bad as a stat like the yards allowed suggests, or as good as a stat like the turnover difference or ppg suggests. Truth is, we're somewhere in the middle, and exactly where will become more telling as the year progresses.
TD_washingtonredskins
Some thoughts about the defense (no particular order or organization): 1) I find myself confused with how this defense is accomplishing this recent surge of stinginess with points. I watch the games and would swear we should be giving up more than 12-13 points. 2) For all the praise GB received in converting to a 3-4, our defense outplayed them yesterday when you consider the offenses each defense was facing. We forced 2 turnovers to their 1 (and their TO was soft, though scary for a few seconds, coming on the last play of regulation on a Hail Mary). We only gave up 50 or so more yards than they did vs. a much more dynamic offense. Lastly, our D improved as the game progressed which demonstrates flexibility and adjustments. The GB D got worse and worse and ultimately gave up several key plays in the 4th quarter and OT. 3) Defensive rankings (I believe we're back to 32nd) are what they are...a measure of yardage given up. If you could come up with a comprehensive defensive ranking which includes points given up (I believe we're in the top 10 there), turnovers, third-down conversions, etc., I think we'd be a middle-of-the-pack team. In conclusion, I don't quite get it because every play feels like it could be a TD against us or a sack/turnover, but I think we're piecing together an OK defense. And, given the misfits we have in some key positions and the fact that we're in year 1 of the scheme, I'll take that 5 games into the season. Enjoy that read...haha! DCsportsfan53
Also, on the piles of yards teams are putting up, it's partially by design. We're playing a lot of two deep, bend don't break zone, giving teams the check downs and saying you may move the ball but we're going to stiffen at the end and you're going to have to string 12 plays together to score. Tracking yards against a defense is one of the more overated stats in football.
hatethe cowboys
The best thing that could happen to our defense now would be success on offense. We've gotta start sustaining drives so our D can get a breather. I'm surprised we weren't totally gassed by the fourth quarter.

I did enjoy that read and I agree with your conclusion. Every play does feel like it can be a TD play when our defense is on the field. Problem is, we have no secondary. Back when Sean Taylor was FS, I did not feel like that when he was playing. I need if someone caught it in the middle, that Taylor would come out of know where and get a big hit. That's what I would like to invest in when we look for a FS. I want another dude that can force a big hit and send the ball flying out. Makes the game a lot more explosive. And if the offense knows that we have a guy that powerful, they won't throw it up the middle. They will normally play the side, and thats where our CB's come into play.
