Skins Defense- good or bad?

Stats - We gave up well over 400 yards again

Tape - wide open GB receivers, especially in the slot

Score - 13 points allowed against one of the top offenses in the league and possibly the best QB

Timely sack by orakpo in OT, timely int by Landry. 4th and goal stop.

Am I not alone in thinking during the course of the game that our D looks like the detroit lions but then I realize theyve given up hardly any points? Same story against Dallas, Philly.

The only guy in the secondary I really think has failed regularly is Buchanon. LBs have seemed fine, McIntosh made some plays today. D line not very good but theyre more about run stopping and GB only had the one big run... plus haynesworth was out.

When the defense get burned it usually looks like a scheme/playcall issue. Yet just when I am getting angry at Haslett, I have to give him credit for keeping Romo sits to pee, Rodgers, Desean Jackson out of the endzone.

And finally, will Peyton Manning be too good for us, or will Haslett figure out how to stop him too?

Our D played as well today as I've ever seen, all things considering. We got two takeaways, a few sacks, lots of pressure, and only gave up 13 points to an excellent offensive team.

As far as Manning goes, well Peyton Manning may be the best QB ever. I don't think anyone can really "stop" him. Just play tough and physical.

We give up lots of yards but not many points at all. The 3-4 has turned our LB core from a weakness into a strength, especially with Alexander starting over Carter. The real weakness in our team is our secondary and NT - we need to replace Rogers who doesn't fit the scheme, and we need some depth for our nickel and dime packages. Other than that, we're a stud NT away from being a REALLY good D.

In my mind D is all about not giving up points, and getting the ball back for the offense...This D does that, HOW WE DO...I have no clue, b/c we aren't complex in our coverages, we don't get a great, consistent pass rush, we don't cover all that well, and we don't stop the run all that well...I guess what this D is developing is a clutchness to make a big play when it's needed...This D is looking like the NO D from last yr, give up gobs of yards, but creates a lot of TO's, and don't give up a lot of points...

So to answer the OP's question...I'm going to say good enough lol!

Overall, the defense is pretty good. However, the problem with our defense is that it's not dominant. It spends way too much time on the field and thereby keeps our offense off the field. This takes away any offensive rhythm we could get had we got on the field earlier. The defense is doing okay in terms of takeaways, but if you're going to spend that much time on the field, you need more than two takeaways.

It's so hard to say. While I'm watching the game, it seems that we are being steamrolled. Then I look at the score and it's not bad. I guess this is bend don't break, but we give up way too many yards. The score could have easily been 14-0, but the defense stopped them on 4th and goal. However, they allowed them to march that far in the first place. There are definitely areas of improvement to be made.

I'd rather give up 400 yards than 40 points. I'm pleased thus far, although the zones scare me somewhat.

This is exactly what I was gonna say. We give up a lot of yards, but at the end of the day, the score is the most important part. We held dallas to 7 and GB to 13...I'd say that's pretty damn good.

Plus we're getting sacks and turnovers at clutch times.

We just don't always look very good in coverage, especially the zone.

I think we need to tighten it up more. LIke too much cushion on their receivers.

Agree with this. We allow way too much space, I hate the zone schemes. Opposing WRs have so much room.

I am confused by this defense, but I am pleased how we seem to tighten up near the goal line. Nonetheless, the yards allowed is troubling. If I had to rate it would be like a 7.5/10 for a C+.

Well said...I couldn't agree more!

Some how this defense gets a lot of help from the flags at times...but then again if they dont hold rak qb's get killed so../shrug

unless snyder is paying the refs, that's probably due to our defense frustrating the offense (see orakpo holds). in all 3 wins we have essentially let the opponent beat themselves while we stay relatively steady- it sucks to not move the ball on offense but its better than turning it over and giving up points

The defense would be light years better if we had a nose tackle that was actually worthy of taking double teams and getting penetration. I think the defensive woes start there because QB's have too much time to throw and the LB's aren't seeing any gaps to get to the QB on a regular basis.

I'm more concerned with Buchanon than Rogers. What is it about him that you feel makes him a poor scheme fit? I understand teh complete lack of hands and the emphasis on turnovers but he's been fantastic in coverage and helped in run support. I'd personally like to see him here long term.
