Shanahan Takes A Wild Gamble--Cutting Devin Thomas, And Crunching The Numbers

That's Joey Galloway. Or, more specifically, that's how many games Joey Galloway has been healthy enough to play in over the last three seasons before ending up in Washington.

Here are some more numbers:

That's how many games Joey Galloway has been healthy enough to actually start in over those same three seasons.

Seconds. That's how long it took me to believe Devin Thomas was a bust after we drafted him.

Now I'm certainly no Thomas fan--I never have been. Ditto for Malcolm Kelly. Drafting either of these two players was a huge gamble. But was it more of a gamble than actually cutting Thomas today?

Cutting Thomas has now left us praying more than ever against the injury bug hitting our receivers.

Certainly Shanahan is enough of a student of the game to know that he can't count on Galloway being healthy for more than half of the games this season. That's the exact reason why Tampa Bay, Pittsburgh and New England all got rid of him. He's a crafty, speedy veteran, but his body simply won't let him get on the field as much as we would like.

So in the unfortunate, and very likely event that Galloway is once again out for a large part of the season, where does that leave us in the receiver department? Who would step in, and more importantly, step up to be our second receiving threat to compliment Moss?

Anthony Armstrong has shown potential. But enough potential to keep Moss from being doubled on every play? Enough to feel good about our chances of moving the ball through the air?

0

That's how many games Roydell Williams has played in the NFL over the last two seasons, prior to joining Washington.

0

That's how many games Mike Furrey and Malcolm Kelly will play this season.

And that's not even to mention the worst scenario--Moss being injured for any significant period of time. Would that make Joey Galloway our number one receiver?

Grab a drink, and get some tickets for the show tonight. We have a new shooter at the table.

Let's hope he doesn't crap out.

Hail.

Moss will get hurt eventually. It happens almost every season and he's receiving more targets than ever. He started to wear down in the Rams game, it's only going to get worse. Kelly and Thomas were good prospects. It was a pretty big failure by our FO and coaching staffs not to develop either one of them.

It certainly wasn't a shock to see Thomas getting cut but I would have rather see it happen before the season. That way we could have at least attempted to pick somebody up or trade for someone. We got a lot of good value trades this offseason I was hoping we could snag someone in another low risk high reward trade.

Good post, great points to think about. The scariest thing is your ending. If Moss goes down.... I don't even know...

Good post? You actually understood what he was talking about? I had to read another persons post in order to understand the OP was worried about Moss going down. His statistics (LOL) left me wondering what is he talking about?

In any event, remember when Cooley went down and Davis was thrown into the starter spot? I'm sure whoever is required to take over for Moss will do well. Part of the problem right now is the Skins game planning against other teams and utilize what players will work best against them. Pretty soon I get the feeling this offense is going to start shining and maybe it's Cooley all game, maybe it's Armstrong the next, maybe it's Davis the week after, but I can see this team getting better.

These types of less than insightful posts are just maddening. Both DT & MK have been give ample opportunity to PROVE what they are capable of. Neither has or can for whatever reason. They are getting paid millions of dollars to perform. Obviously, at this point in time, neither DT or MK can perform up to the NFL level. Vinny need to be decimated.

That is clearly where Thomas ranked on our roster.

6 & 4

That is too many WR's & RB's for Shanahans roster.

Injury to Portis caused the axe to fall sooner that expected

- I believe the FO will make one last push for Vjax and irrespective of the outcome, the WR & RB slots could shift continually throughout the coming weeks.

still trying to wrap my head around how bad DT has to be to have been beaten out by the weak WR's that are still on the roster.

Did DT run over Shanahan's dog with his car?

Now will DT be the next Taylor Jacobs (Does nothing when he leave here) or will he use this as motivation to prove himself somewhere else and end up like Brandon Lloyd (at least so far this season)

Well at least he has one and a nice catalog of NFL success too. DT NEVER has or will have.

Yeah, I thought the same thing about Brandon Lloyd lol...his career was dead when he left here as far as I could see. He'd be the #3 WR on a few other teams until he was out of the league for good.

Dude is the #2 WR in the league right now. Just goes to show, you never can tell...although we all like to pretend we can lol :ols::D...

Joey Galloway can be expected to be healthy enough to play in roughly 8 games this season. Much like Shawn Springs, Marcus Washington, and CP heading into this season--it's foolish to believe we can count on him staying healthy.

That leaves Armstrong, prayers that we don't see the words "Moss" and "hamstring" intertwined this season, and a whole lot of questions.

So you're basically saying that, because of this, getting rid of ANY of our WRs right now would be a risk? lol (not that I don't necessarily disagree)...

As someone else pointed out, I think it became a numbers game as much as anything else, and Shanahan apparently trusts Banks and probably even Austin more than Thomas. We'll have to see whether or not that trust was misplaced, I guess.

Yes. And I agree with you on the numbers part, and the injury to CP necessitating this right now.

But looking ahead, we have to assume that Joey Galloway will be out for 8 games this year. Hopefully that doesn't happen again, but history sure seems to suggest that it will.

With Galloway out, that would leave Moss on one side, and Armstrong on the other.

And if Moss needs a break, even a few plays off, let alone a hamstring injury that sits him for a few games, who comes in then to replace him?

Armstrong as our first, and Austin as our second? Williams maybe?

We are Tori Spelling thin at WR now. This is a huge gamble.

It may also cause more urgency in the need to sign someone like Vincent Jackson. We either passed on in most cases, or weren't successful in landing Boldin, Housh, Moss or even a TO.

Cutting DT right now really leaves us vulnerable to the injury bug going forward this year. Surely Shanahan isn't thinking that Galloway will stay healthy, is he?

It appears that up until now, Galloway is primarily their "streak, deep post or whatever you want to call it" route runner and blocking WR. I don't think I've seen him over the middle or underneath more that twice.

I wonder if it's by design to keep him healthy, if there is such a thing?
