Dan Snyder is the annoying Redskins fan you knew as a kid

Growing up at school you'd sit with the other boys in the cafeteria and talk about the Redskins. For the most part your group all knew what they were talking about, collected the cards, could name the guys, and talk about the game.

Dan was the kid, who knew everyone, but nobody knew him, who'd sit with you and prove he didn't have a clue.

Yea he wore his Redskins belt buckle. But he also Jack Pardee was a great coach, could only name 5 guys on the Redskins (and those 5 were the stars), didn't realize the St. Louis Cardinals were in the NFC east, always yelled "PASS INFERENCE" anytime a Redskins WR didn't come down with the ball, was mad when Jay Schroeder got traded for gasp, an o-lineman and wanted Joe Gibbs fired when the Redskins were 0-2 in the early part of 1984.

Yea, Dan was that kid. Dan though, while not the smartest kid in the world, had some great business saavy wasn't afraid to talk to people. A few years later, after a couple of failures, he'd make it very big during the biggest stock market bubble in global history, while being in the right place at the right time to buy the Washington Redskins with the wealth he had quickly accumulated over the last 8 years.

One day Dan is in a hotel in DC getting ready to close on the deal, when a tall, dark good looking silver tongued guy named Vinny comes up to him in a hotel lobby. Dan, not knowing much about football, is wowed by this former college QB who was on the staff of Lou Holtz at Notre Dame when they won the National Championship in the late 80s. This Vinny guy then moved on to the 49ers and was part of the Superbowl winning team in 1994!! Vinny wears both rings proudly and lets Dan touch them. Cherry on top, Vinny loves racquetball also. Thats how Dan lets off some steam.

Vinny gives Dan a few references. Mel Kiper at ESPN is one of them. Vinny has been giving Mel info for years on the 49ers pre draft thinking. Another reference is a now going senile Lou Holtz. Vinny doesn't mention to Dan he was part of the reason the 49ers dynasty was falling apart. Nor does he tell Dan that Bill Walsh quickly booted his ass out of the organization.

Dan has seen and heard enough, he doesn't need to interview Vinny or check with Bill Walsh, this guy looks and sounds the part, he knows football, he is hired!

And that is Dan Snyder in a nut shell. Not a bad guy, just a guy who didn't know what he was talking about and got wowed by someone else who didn't know what he was talking about. When you really think about it, thats why Jeff George, Bruce Smith, Mark Carrier, Steve Spurrier, and Albert Haynesworth made sense to the guy. Thats why he wasn't having fun when Marty was in charge. You had that passionate fan, with a complete moron as his sidekick running the show

Hard to tell how much of what is written in the media is true - we've all now heard a million variations on the "Call me Mr. Snyder" legend that\s always from someone who swears they know someone who knows to whom it happened - even though the story changes from Art Modell's wife to the new Raven's owner's wife to so and so.... Snyder has been proven to be quite generous to charities, but also seems to be vindictive and petty.

I do know that the "Mr. Snyder" thing is true. I had a friend who was an intern there for a while, and she pretty much confirmed it.

Tough room, SHF.

Funny how little the first two posts offer.

What SHF just said is totally true, thank you for your total lack of contribution you two (now three).

Sounds pretty dead on to me.

You guys really dig management, it seems.

:ols:

I can say with utmost confidence that a very sizeable chunk of this MB would have ran the Redskins far better then Dan Snyder has this past decade.

This thread came up because I was talking to a friend while watching the piece. I asked him "how could a guy who is such a fan screw this thing up so badly"

Its not just the on field product either. The monetization of the Redskins brand. Charging for training camp in 2000. Ticket hikes in the range of 30-40 percent after the first playoff win in 6 years (after the 2005 season). The endless amount of commercials at the stadium, the overpriced parking passes, the souring of the relationship with Redskins alumni, cutting our last Superbowl hero during the offseason of 2000 (Brian Mitchell) to bring in a guy the fan base hated (Dieon Sanders)

Thats all off the top of my head. My buddy then told me exactly who Dan Snyder actually is. And it makes perfect sense.

I really do believe with the utmost confidence that there are many posters on this message board whose ownership would have been far better then 4 last place finishes in the last 6 years, then four 10 loss seasons, then 1 playoff win in a decade, then 1 division title in 11 years, and no seasons of more then 10 wins.

Its obvious who the guy was, he was a big time fan who wasn't nearly as saavy as many members on this MB here. And its going to take a long long while before many of us can say "hey, good job Dan"

Anyone in here wish they had 800 Mil lying around at the time when the Skins were for sale?.. I know I did.

And I'm sure everyone in here would have bought the team and been completely hands off after that.

Heck, my very first decision would have been to fire Norv..LOL and that as we all know would have gone over well with the media.

Except SHF is far from the "annoying adult fans". He's one of the most informed guys on this site and actually, ya know, CONTRIBUTES to ES.

Thats awesome. Im glad he does. This thread is trash however. The whole "I could run the team better" crap is tired... Most of the people on ANY sports message board couldnt put an Ikea end table together let alone run a professional franchise...

He's probably still a hardcore businessman. Simply hiring Shanahan doesn't mean that he had a fricking epiphany, changed his entire moral outlook, and did something like apologize to all the workers he mistreated, if any.

You know, the whole businessman thing is far overblown in my opinion.

Dan Snyder is a product of the 1990s business man. Get bigger, bigger, BIGGER, have an IPO and sell out. Six Flags is a failure. Johnny Rockets is meh. That thing with Tom Cruise?

Thats what he did in the 1990s with his crap "direct marketing" Snyder Communications. There are very few people who actually know what a scummy business it was, but he sold out during the summer of 1999 for 2 billion dollars, right at the peak of the tech bubble.

LKB said it best last fall. You see it with the Redskins. He expanded the stadium. Expanded the marketing. All he needs to do now is sell big, but he is a fan and thats not how the NFL works.

I posted this in another thread but speaking of the "Mr. Snyder" thing, did you notice Shanny called him Dan? I thought that was awesome. Doubt Zorny got away with that.

I could have easily had this team finish in last 4 out of the last 6 years and had cost far less to the fans. I think you could have done the same

This is a pretty damning list if you ask me.

Listen, I will never say Dan Sydner is a bad man. I've never met him, I don't know him. The only thing I do know about him, tough, is his performance as the owner of the Washington Redskins. He did, indeed, inherit a mess; but the mess became a full on cluster **** during his tenure.

I don't doubt his fan hood and I don't doubt his character as a man, because I'm not in a position to do that; but I think, as a life long, third generation fan of all things Washington sports, I can do an evaluation of his ownership of the Redskins, and I cannot give him a passing grade yet.
