Jaguars make moves

8/26/2003

The Jacksonville Jaguars today acquired safety Anthony Mitchell from the Baltimore Ravens in a trade for a conditional draft choice. The team also released wide receiver Kevin Lockett and safety Johndale Carty and claimed defensive backs Brad Franklin and Willie Miles off waivers.

Mitchell, 28, is a four-year veteran who has played in 48 NFL games with six starts for the Ravens. Originally signed as an undrafted rookie by the Jaguars in 1999, Mitchell spent that preseason with the team and was waived in the final cuts. He spent most of the 1999 season on Baltimore’s practice squad and was elevated to the 53-man roster for the final four games. He did not miss any games from 2000 to 2002, during which time he made 42 tackles and three interceptions on defense and 48 tackles on special teams. Mitchell provided one of the key plays of the Ravens’ 2000 championship season when he returned a blocked field goal 90 yards for a touchdown in Baltimore’s 24-10 playoff victory over Tennessee. The 6-1, 211-pound Mitchell played collegiately at Tuskegee, where he was a four-year letterman. He is a native of Atlanta.

Lockett had been claimed by the Jaguars last November and played in the final seven games, catching five passes and scoring two touchdowns. Carty was signed by the Jaguars on May 27 after being released by Atlanta.

Franklin was a seventh-round draft choice of the Carolina Panthers in 2002, splitting the season between the team’s practice squad and its 53-man roster (he was inactive for eight games). He was a four-year letterman at Louisiana-Lafayette and is a native of Broadmoor, La.

Miles was signed as an undrafted rookie by the Minnesota Vikings out of Tennessee this year. He was a four-year letterman and two-year starter. He is a native of Fort Worth, Texas.

The Jaguars’ roster stands at 71 players because wide receiver Jimmy Smith does not count because of his pending league suspension.

Lockett is another low rent ballplayer in the same mold as the ex-Gators we had around last season.

Some were up in arms when we didn't keep him, but he didn't do a damn thing in Jacksonville.

Jacquez Green, Lockett, Doering, Anthony.

What a collection of garbage we had at WR.

other than Gardner and perhaps McCants these guys were Arena League quality

My low point last year when I really, really blew up watching the team was Lockett catching a pass in Green Bay and turning upfield. Then he fumbled. Thats when I said Lockett should be cut and he was. Funny how last offseason the reports were that he looked really good in minicamp...
