DENVER - Denver Broncos wide receiver Kenny McKinley has apparently taken his own life, sources tell FOX31 News.

McKinley, 23, was found dead in Arapahoe County. No further details were immediately available.

McKinley had struggled to stay healthy during his two years with the Broncos. Limited to kick returns, was placed on injury reserve with a knee injury in 2009. He was also placed on IR in 2010 prior to the start of the regular season.

McKinley was a standout WR at South Carolina and climbed into the SEC record books with 207 receptions, the third-most in conference history, according to NFL.com. He also became just the 12th player in league history collect more than 2,700 receiving yards.

McKinley is the third Broncos player to die a sudden death in the past four years. On New Year's Day 2007, cornerback Darrent Williams was killed in drive-by shooting in downtown Denver. In Feb. 2007, running back Damien Nash, 24, collapsed and died during a charity basketball game.

I was reading the Sean Taylor Trail thread in the stadium at the end of the MNF game when I saw the ticker "NFL player found dead". In that thread was an embedded tribute video that was touching and when I saw the ticker on TV I just felt overwhelmed. Seeing these players die so young is horrible. I'm just so extremely sad right now, especially for his family. Losing a loved one is never easy but dealing with the fact he took his own life makes this tragedy so much worse.

Can't imagine what he would be going through to take his own life at 23 years of age while playing in the NFL. Thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. rip.gif

I imagine it's been his struggles since he's been in the league. Just think, football is your life. It defines you a human being. You're setting records in college. Your hopes are high. Your friends and family believe in you. Your future is bright. Then your put on IR two years in a row. Your future as a football player, the thing that defines your entire existence looks like it might be coming to an end. The sense of failure is overwhelming. Throw in mental illness and what happened happens.

Now I could be totally wrong. Maybe his girl left him. I don't know. But I'd be willing to bet that it's what I'm saying. I'll eat crow when I'm wrong.

Sounds like you were pretty dead on with your prediction based on the latest story.

I figured you were probably right.

Hadn't heard the latest so I had to look it up. Really sad.

http://blogs.denverpost.com/broncos/2010/09/21/report-mckinley-suffered-from-depression-following-knee-surgery/5286/

Broncos receiver Kenny McKinley was suffering from depression after undergoing knee surgery four weeks ago, according to a report released Tuesday night by the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s office.

The department ruled that McKinley’s death was a suicide caused by a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head while lying in his bed at his Aurora home. An autopsy performed by the Arapahoe County coroner’s office Tuesday morning confirmed the finding of suicide.

The report, quoting an investigator at the scene, said McKinley had made statements shortly after the surgery “that he should just kill himself.”

The report added McKinley didn’t know what he would do if he couldn’t play football because football was all he knew.

If someone says they're going to kill themselves, or they're thinking about killing themselves, people need to take that **** serious.
