Wow-- A Review of the Redskins from A Texans Fan

OK. Just got done watching the game. (I had to pick my son up 3 hours away from the house so it was on DVR). I haven't even been on Texanstalk yet. I wanted to come give you an honest opinion before I get corrupted on that board :D)

A couple of notes. You guys are a lot farther along than we were the year we went 2-14. You played us a lot closer than I thought you would. I know that sick feeling you guys have after an almost win... I've had so many of those over the last 8 years. I'm gonna do a quick review from an honest perspective... if you want it fine.. if not, I guess delete it.

QB: I wanted to know if number 5 was still capable of extending plays. He is. He isn't the same run for 50 a game that he used to be, but you can see he's definitely still moves in the pocket well and will get outside of it when he needs to. Oh and that guy is strong as an ox. He didn't turn the ball over (though there were a couple of passes that I thought could have been picked) and he threaded the needle a few times. Overall I think you guys should get several years out of him. Someone asked why you go get him if you're installing an offense that takes 3-4 years to install? You can now groom a guy for a few years with no pressure to start him. Your defense will keep you in enough games that you will win 8-9 games this year.

RB: You need youth. Portis/Johnson looked terrible. Portis has lost a step, but more importantly his cuts aren't hard enough for the ZBS. You didn't have huge holes, but there were a few seems that honestly, 2005 Portis gets 5 yards and 2010 Portis is stonewalled or gets a yard. Johnson is done done done. You're going to have to address this this off season. If you're really interested, go scout people's practice squads. There's a guy (Jeremiah Johnson) that was with the Texans this year. He had turf toe and I think he got an injury settlement. He's the kind of guy you're looking for. He struggled a bit picking up the blitz but he's got to be waiting by the phone.

WR/TE: I wasn't as impressed with Moss as I thought I would be. Cooley though is great. Outstanding. And Galloway can flat out run. Davis is nice too and that kid Armstrong. I think your only problem is that your No 1 receiver is your TE. I know its been done before, but honestly in today's NFL I don't know the last team to go very far with their TE as their biggest receiving threat. I know moss had 10 catches, but averaging 8.9 ypc... I don't really expect that from your NO 1 receiver.

OL. I thought they played well in pass protection. Houston didn't look as committed to the pass rush up front (when we got you in third and long it looked better with two exceptions). But your OL certainly played well. Williams is the real deal, and he gave up 2 sacks but those were basically a vet taking advantage of a rook. When it comes to the running game, you were below average. You've got to expect that though. This system takes a while to get going. The only times though, that Portis got through the hole was when it was in the direction of the hand off. That is a huge problem for you guys. Portis at this point in his career is just not an every down back. He's not a real no. 1. Get a young guy in there and let him teach him the system (he knows it from his Den days).

Front seven: You guys have a great front seven. You were getting pressure on Schaub. Like I said before though, most of it was coming from the side. Schaub is great at dealing with that kind of pressure. You will win a lot of games with that pressure though because there are only a handful of QBs in the league that deal with pressure like that well. I would mark "fat ass NT who can move the center" under your needs. You were solid against the run (but that was a function of getting ahead early).

CBs:

You need work there. Part of the problem was that despite getting pressure you only got one turnover out of schaub. Part of that was coverage breakdown. Look you're not going to shut down Johnson. We know that, but he was wide open on a couple of plays. There is no shame in that... and honestly, Walter is better than you guys gave him credit for being but people were running free. Hall is a heavy hitter but I was unimpressed with is and Rogers coverage skills. You need a legit #1 corner.

Safetys:

You guys have a gem in Landry. If Moore is as special as you guys think he is... he will help a lot when he gets back. Landry though, is a beast. He's kind of like a CB that's built like a LB. I was very impressed.

Overall, this was the perfect storm for you guys. I think Houston played 2 1/2 quarters of terrible football and was able to dig out of a hole. (That is a development of the Texans that I'm actually glad to see. Usually we've played 2 1/2 quarters of great football only to insert our heads into our rectums in the last 1 1/2 quarters or less). I was impressed. I'd say you need to look at the right side of your line, RB, WR, and CB. If you get the line fixed, you'll be able to make some pretty average RBs look good and some good one's look great.

On the bright side. DALLAS IS GARBAGE. Don't worry, you'll be ahead of them when we get done with them!

Hope you enjoyed it.

The Texans were able to 'dig out of a hole' with a shovel the Redskins handed them.

God, I hate it when other teams' fans come on here and try to give us the 'nice game' treatment. Hey Mike, maybe you don't think you are trolling, but if you actually came here before the Texans message board, you actually are.

Opposing fans tend to just look at our record from last year and put us in the same category as rebuilding teams. But we were in the playoffs in 2007 and started 6-2 in 2008 before the wheels came off, so--and I don't mean this in a bad way--most of us weren't really surprised today, esp. now that we have a QB and HC.

You sure you don't want to be a Redskins fan? We could use you man. You know your stuff. Pretty much gave a perfect analysis of our team. If I was to tweak one thing, I think it would be the corners. They had a tough game, but I am pretty confident in both of them. Plus, Carlos finally caught a ball (even though he did his best to drop that one).

Also, any chance you'd want to trade AJ for AH? Just a suggestion.

Yeah I agree with you here, and I bet everything that we will be drafting for one in next years draft.

Yup. Not surprised at all. Even after this loss, I think most of us are extremely confident going forward.

Oh. I forgot to go finish the title. If a MOD would.. and you title it "Wow-- A Texans Review of the Redskins"

I believe if you "Go Advanced" in the edit window it will allow you to change it.

Thanks for your analysis too. I think it was spot on. Truth is we are a lot further ahead than the vast majority of people expected us to be. Losing stings but we play played on a much higher level than last year.

Also, we had 4 wins last year ;)

I was surprised by the game. You're right. We got back into the game because you can't run the ball. If trolling is giving you an honest review of what I saw in your team (Not an emotional response to a game), then I need to find a bridge. I was impressed with the skins and figured I'd come give you guys a review before I go read "RA RA RA" on my board. We have our holes too. Believe me. Other than our secondary.. we got very little pressure unless it was an obvious passing situation. Everyone will point to Mario's sack total, but he didn't play as well today. Part of that may have been you guys being up all day and him waiting for the run, I don't know. As for Slaton's miscue... WTF???

I'm not trolling and if you think I am... I'm sorry. I wanted honest intellectual discussion, just like I did before the game.

I was amazed at Schaub and his ability to throw the ball and stay calm in the pocket. The redskins defense is set up to throw a lot of looks at the QB and get the QB to make mistakes.

The entire game Schaub looked calm, nothing rattled the guy. He just didn't make mistakes in that second half. Other QBs would get rattled and start throwing dumb passes but Schaub just stayed cool.

Nice perspective man. One which many knee jerkers would be better for reading.

As regards your own team, I don't think I'm talking that much outside the realms of reality to say if you get a few breaks here and there, with that O, you could be this years Saints. Man Kubiak's moulded an exciting team down there. Congrats today. Heck of a ball game.

Hail.

Ignore him, what you're doing is not trolling by any means.

Texans have a disgustingly good offense and the defense is coming along. Good luck the rest of this year, you're the only team in Texas I wouldn't mind seeing win :ols:

He's not trolling.

He gave some fair analysis and did it from the other team's perspective.

I wish more people around here posted as in-depth as he did.

Thanks for the kind words. There was a lot to be happy about, but there were a lot of things I didn't like from the Texans perspective. I try to be as unemotional as possible when I review us. I've done a few for the other teams but usually I don't have time. I felt like there was great discussion and that I needed to come eat my crow in some regards. I'll write my review of the Texans performance tomorrow on Texanstalk and it will be kind of brutal compared to most. I think you should be moving AH for a RB. I'm trying to think of where he might go and for who. Oakland for Mcfadden or Bush? I don't know about Bushes running style but Mcfadden seems to me like he could make a cut and get up the field pretty well. (I haven't seen enough of him to tell you for sure). What about Glen Coffee? He was cut by the 49ers wasn't he? Johnson, like I said... he looked good and ran hard but his toe got hurt (I'm currently in a boot with turf toe so I literally feel his pain).

Mike

PS. One of my best friends is a RS fan. I might not be one but I'll check you guys out from time to time.

Before the game I said that I thought you guys would have to get pressure up the middle to wreck havoc for Schaub. He, Manning, Brees and Brady are great at handling pressure from the sides. Manning is great with pressure in his face too (that's the difference between he and Eli if you ask me). With 75-80% of the QB's you guys will nail them and would have had numerous fumbles. You guys were on Schaub ALL DAY. Its amazing that you didn't have several FF, his ability to sense the rush is why (going back to before we traded for him) I wanted to trade him. Whatever that "it" is at QB... he has it.

He joined a ministry or something.

A real credit to Schaub. The guys on here saying it's all our fault and that we gave the game away aren't giving the Texans enough credit. Just because you've never been to the playoffs in previous seasons does not mean your a bad team. Really, that offense is scary. It reminds me of the year the Saints discovered Pierre Thomas.

I'm still doubtful that the fat man gets moved. People were saying that his inactive status today was suspicious, but until anything happens we gotta assume he will be on this team. I hope we will address RB at some point in future drafts, but as for now, I would love to see Keiland Williams get some more carries here and there. Certainly couldn't hurt us any. Worst case scenario is he gets 1 yard a carry, and we are back to where we started with Clinton.:)

I have a few disagreements with you TexanMike in regards to the number one receiver point. It would be sweet to have one, but it's not absolutely necessary. I actually loved the fact that McNabb was able to spread the ball around today. Sellers, Moss, Cooley, Galloway, Roydell, Armstrong, Williams...they all had an impact. Moss is reliable for his solid hands...so is Cooley. I don't 100% agree with you on your TE point but you're entitled to it

I do agree with you on our running game...that is very disappointing. I have not seen anything from Larry Johnson so I think he needs to go. Maybe we can try signing or trading for an average RB with speed that can at least be somewhat solid. If we could have kept the ball on the ground and burn the clock...we win this game

Going into this game...I figured that our main chance of winning would be to get ahead and force you to make an uphill climb through the air. You did that...the only difference is I thought we'd be able to fall back on at the very least an AVERAGE running game to cushion a potential aerial onslaught.

I will say I'm proud of this team though. I think we can win a number of games this year and I honestly believe that we're playoff contenders. For this game, we had to prepare for Arian Foster, Andre Johnson, and your passing game. There are not a lot of teams where I can say we have to worry about a RB that can rack up 230 yards...and a passing game that's also tough to prepare for. So I do think you were a very strong test for our defense and I expect it to stand up better against other offenses. And like you said, not a lot of Qbs will be able to handle the pressure we put on Schaub.
