Gibbs Hog Heaven
One defeat to a team nobody wants to give credit to and the negative, unrealistic hoards (did anyone seriously expect a turnaround from amongst the leagues worst for WAY longer than just last season to SB contenders?) are out with a vengeance; blaming everyone and anyone but the real culprit of years of neglect with this team. Reed Doughty needs hanging blah blah. The 34's a complete joke blah blah. Gano's just another in a long line of Redskins kickers you can rely on to cost us games blah blah. Shanahan's ego is costing this team blah blah. You want to blame anyone for this loss? Look no further than the man that continues to be a bane on the Washington Redskins organization as his legacy continues to bite us in the ass. HARD! Vincent Cerrato Esq. Reed Doughty and Chris Horton? Nothing outside of Hall at corner? Blame Cerrato for years of secondary neglect. Not strong enough up-front on the D-line with no depth behind? Blame the man with a serious aversion to linemen of ANY description, Vinny Cerrato. Oh, and throw in his ridiculous $100 million leaving gift last off-season to that mix who's a total disgrace to his profession. No linebacker depth? Meh, we'll get buy on scrubs right Vinn? On the other side of the ball, no running game? Clinton can do it all on his own right Vinn? Until he's that worn down and beat up he's old before his time. Why back him up with quality when we can go cheap with Rock and Ladell for years? No O-line depth? See Vinny "Lineman? We don't need no stinking linemen" Cerrato. Coach Mike and Bruce, from day one, have had to try overhaul a complete joke of a roster, whilst putting out a competitive product; with little to no bargaining chips to work with thanks to Vinny "Meh, draft picks are for losers" Cerrato. Noticing a pattern here? We've just lost an agonising, hard fought game to an a Houston team that could turn out to be this years Saints. Theit offense has the potential to be THAT good. We've finally found a passing attack, for the first time in EONS in DC, lead be an O-coordinator with balls of steel when it comes to taking shots down field and attacking; and a QB who's arguably the best pure QB in DC since the last time the Eagles made a boneheaded trade with us for signal callers. We're putting in place an attacking defense that's creating something totally foreign around these parts, TURNOVERS, and therein doing something phenomenal in DC in living memory, actually SCORING points and getting serious pressure and sacks on opposing QB's. But oh contraire the dissenters cry, what about all the yards we're giving up? Besides it being a work in progress, having never so much as run a 34 in DC, let alone with these players; look no further than, you guessed it, Vinny fricking Cerrato for the porous state of the secondary with his cheap option, average selection policy. Maybe if they'd been left with any darn draft picks to work with or talent of any value to trade; and not so many gaping holes right across the board they'd of been able to do more than they already have in one off-season. All in all Coach Mike and Allen have done a miraculous job in such a short space of time in turning a laugh-a-minute National laughing stock into a professional, respected football organization again. One that's already beaten a far superior Dallas team in terms of talent, and gave a Texans team today that could well be a serious contender for the big prize one HECK of a run for it's money. And their moulding one Hell of an exciting team in the process. All with the ethos on character and hard work that Coach Gibbs strove to make the norm in Washington. So we lost a game, as frustrating as it was. Relish the re-birth of this team, that's gona' come with it's up's and downs; and let them grow as we go forward; without jumping on every little thing that isn't perfect and continuing to make those that shouldn't pay for the sins of the past do from those that should. I for one are one proud as heck fan in defeat tonight. Not happy with the defeat, but it's all about the bigger picture. I have my Redskins back. Hail. skinsfan3880
I cosign to the fullest. People are just too down after one loss. We will come back next week and stomp a mudhole in St louis. This team is getting better and better as the weeks go on. yes it sucks we lost but we saw something that we havent seen in A long while and thats a competent offense that can actually move the ball down the field and score points. Frostx08
Finally some more positivity I find everyone is forgetting that our running game killed us in the end. If we have a running game....we run out the clock and win the game. People will still point to flaws on defense, but it wouldn't be as drastic if we have a running game to milk the clock...thus not forcing the defense to come on the field again I am impressed with our passing game though. Texans may have racked up almost 500 yards, but we had over 400 in even less attempts. What does that mean? It means that our receivers can actually catch the ball and move the chains. I counted about 7 or so receivers that made catches today. That's a good sign going down the road and I hope we capitalize on that. I also hope we release Larry Johnson and sign or trade for a RB that at least has some speed and is at the very least SOLID
Warhead36
Yep I agree. Vinny's reign of terror is like a dead corpse in the room. The body is gone but it will take some time to fully get rid of the stench.
Ghost of
Uh, I agree with the spirit of optimism here but I thought the issue with Vinny was that we neglected the lines until Orakpo and Jarmon, not that we neglected the secondary. In fact, we've spent a hell of a lot of pick and time finding gems at DB. Really, we took Carlos instead of DeMarcus Ware or Merriman in 2005 (or Aaron Rodgers, for that matter.) We took Landry instead of a bunch of good players, Taylor instead of Ben R, Barnes, Tryon, we found Moore, we were practically slobbering over Horton his rookie year. It's a NEW system which puts more pressure, I think, on the secondary (aside from Landry) We also brought in SPRINGS under Vinny. Sorry, I'm not putting this on Vinny, at least not for the secondary. That's a totally absurd thought and I'm not sure i ever heard or contemplated that we 'neglected' the secondary. I'd also point out that the previous years issues with the secondary was weakness in the Front four (now 3) NOT the secondary itself, aside from lack of plays. But we had a fairly good secondary for years and we, until this last couple of games, had considered our safety positions to have good depth. Doughty is getting toasted for giving up a play to one of the very best in the game with no CB help to make a REAL play on the ball, he had great position. Spartacus87
I would blame Vinny for his neglect of the o-line, and the d-line. But our secondary and our LB corp was built up specifically for the 4-3 scheme we've been running since 2004. It's just an awkward transition for those guys from that scheme to Haslett's 3-4 (or, for guys like Andre Carter, any 3-4 at all really). I had any complaint about the secondary at all, it's that we don't have any real depth at FS. But that's about it.
Gibbs Hog Heaven
Meh, maybe's "neglect" was a bad use of word as regards the secondary. I'll re-phrase to "bad use of picks." Outside of # 21 and Landry, where's the real quality for the picks used, certainly in depth? Carlos, with the best will in the World, isn't a first round pick. Not least at the gems that we passed at his expense. (And we won't even get into the VERY costly exercise of taking Captain Checkdown over Rodgers. However big a part Gibbs played, it's all relative.). For all those picks, we've no real depth behind the starters that your fully confident in. (As exemplified today. Landry goes down, and Horton shows that rookie year was a flash in the pan; and as much as I like Reed and his heart, he's just not got the speed to make up the ground.). Corners not much better in terms of depth, hence the Buchanen pick-up. He gets credit for the Hall pick-up, but I'd take issue that we've had a fairly good secondary "for years" Nibbs man, certainly to any degree of depth to speak of. Hail. Carlos is 1st round pick worthy. Especially compared to the rest of the guys in that draft. Seriously- take a look at that draft sometime, it's bums all over the place. Especially in the 1st round. Maybe one of the worst 1st rounds in recent history (especially after the absurd 2004 1st round which I guess took all of the talent). Rogers is easily the best corner selected in that entire draft. And I sincerely hope people aren't still regretful that we didn't take Merriman in that draft instead of Rogers. Horton was a smart value pick at the time because he played in essentially the same defense we ran when he was at UCLA. So he came in knowing the basics of the scheme. That's obviously changed now, but at the time, it was a pretty good situation. Doughty also is a solid SS who plays the run well, but when we stick him out of position at FS and do things like ask him to cover Andre Johnson or Larry Fitzgerald 25 yards downfield 1-on-1, bad things happen. I really don't think the secondary is an issue for us, outside of lacking a true FS to back up Moore. Our problem was, and still is, effective pass rushers and pocket pushers on the DL, which was a major area Vinny neglected until Orakpo came along. And hurts us now because we don't have premiere guys to play in our 3 man front in this new 3-4.
Sanders 83
I always love putting blame on Vinny... I don't really think putting this loss on him is right.. but you do have some good points... No matter what... I think we do have plenty to be positive about... My expecations for this season were first and foremost become competitive again... I think two weeks in... We have certainly accomplished that... Now Shanny just needs to teach them how to close... Oldfan
Vinny is a weasel. But, I dislike unfairness more than I dislike Vinny. Joe Gibbs bears most of the responsibility for trading away our draft picks. Vinny drafted for a ball control offense and a 4-3 defense. Shanahan knew or should have known that the parts wouldn't fit his big play offense and his 3-4 defense. One assumes that he felt that the positives outweigh the negatives.
