But the World Trade Center neighborhood is also filled with eyesores. When I walked from Park Place on the north side of the World Trade Center to Rector Street on the south side, what I encountered were a string of bars, betting parlors, and fast-food restaurants. And within this cluster of buildings, especially noticeable were two strip clubs, the New York Dolls Gentleman’s Club and the ****cat Lounge, plus Thunder Lingerie and More, a sex shop with a peep show. This kind of commercial mix is typical of New York. Most of us who have lived in the city for any period of time take it for granted. But for those who have based their opposition to the Muslim Center on their concern for the sensibilities of the 9/11 families, places like the New York Dolls and the ****cat Lounge present a moral dilemma.

Why are they treated with a live-and-let-live tolerance that doesn’t extend to an Islamic center? How, as a practical matter, are pole dancers less of an affront to the memory of the 9/11 dead than a community center that will have prayer space, a 500-seat auditorium, and a bookstore?

Nice try, but the twin towers were not attacked by extreme sex toys.

Well technically an airplane could be considered an extreme sex toy if you think about it...

I wouldn't want to meet the woman who could use it as one though...

I think the point is that if the area around ground zero is 'hallowed ground', you shouldn't have strip clubs there (I don't care myself).

I'm tired of listening to people argue over this already, either you're for freedom of religion or you're not. The proposed community center is where an old burlington coat factory used to be. It's not being built on the actual site of ground zero, get over it.

People trying to make this a big issue just distracts from the real issues facing the country.

Think again. The building was hit by pieces of plane on 9/11. It literally IS ground Zero.

A lot of things where hit by debris and plane parts, you can't run around planting flags on everything and telling people what they can and can't legally do with their property.

No one would care if this thing was being turned into a sex shop, they just hate Muslims and are using this as an excuse to raise a stink. The whole 'OH OH IT'S HALLOWED GROUND!" is nonsense and is being brought up since there is no legal reason to stop this, so they use this.

My concern is that they'll probably have a secret terrorist meeting room in the basement of the "community center." I wouldn't be surprised if they install a special phone with a direct line to Osama Bin Laden.

To the topic at hand, who doesn't like sex?

I think that the right wing bruhaha about the Muslim center is horrible and an utter betrayal of what our Constitution stands for....

but the OP's argument is really weak. The fact that there are strip clubs near Ground Zero has nothing to do with the discussion.
